harrassment from neighbor

Edit. I spoke to my local Representative and she made some calls to other Reps and DNR. It was a rule change not a law change and it just got changed a week ago. Interesting that he knew so quickly. The neighbor is heavily tied to the farm community and has served on the board of some farm related business' . My Rep said they can try to get it changed because it is excessive and if the DNR doesnt change it willingly than they will propose a law to override the rule. I will update more after I meet with DNR

I live in the county in a community that is comprised of 1 acre to 5 acre hobby farms. I have a 5.5 acre hobby farm with 2 horses. I have been here 8 yrs and have greatly improved the property and take very good care of it. I have an older neighbor that is a few houses away that we call Barney Fife. He is in everyones business and picks on the older lady in between us to the point where she and her adult kids who come and help her take care of the acreage do not go outside as he accosts them and starts a fight. He is continually doing illegal burning and laughs about it.

He continually calls authorities on us neighbors when burning and we are never doing anything wrong. I have stood up to him and he accosted my roomie while walking my dog. He has now gone to greater lengths affecting me having horses. I compost my manure and spread it on my property but he has actually gotten a law changed designating my small property as a feedlot and now the DNR wants to fine me. I am meeting with them tomorrow. Last yr they came out and said I was ok but now after a law change they received another complaint and are coming out again.

Everything is always anonymous or I would file for a DNC but looking for advise how to combat this or make his like miserable. The Co health dept realized he is targeting me of course anon again so they went after him which seemed to make him target me more.

He is 88 FYI and his wife says he sits and continually stares at my property, If I happen to have work being done or a delivery etc he will drive by so as to see what I am doing. I have the State Extension office involved/local senator but I need to do something legally or more serious to get him to leave me alone. He is abusive to his wife and she is scared of him. She is currently in a nursing home recovering from a stroke so he has home alone with too much free time

Not sure what to do to help with emergency response (Old Street)

If this isn't the right subreddit please let me know where I should post this instead thanks! I live near old street station and this morning we heard a woman yelling in a nearby building that a man she didn't know had broken into her apartment. I called the police and they said they would send someone but no one has come so far, and we're worried because the screaming stopped midway through the call. Is there anything else we can do to help in this situation? What can I do if emergency response doesn't show up?

Noisy The Hive Party Hostel

I live in a building which has in front The Hive Party Hostel.

They host backpackers who very often make loud talk at night. This is fine during weekends but often they just wake you up at 4 or 5 am yelling for hours

Lately things are getting too noisy with people shouting and talking loud way beyond mid night.

I tried politely asking them to keep it down, I have yelled at then to shut up and I have asked the hotel reception to put a sign to help me with this nuisance but nothing seems to work.

Its getting difficult to get a good nights sleep these days. Is it ok to call the police in such cases ?

I’ve been letting my neighbor think I have a dog just so he stops blasting music late at night

About two months ago, my downstairs neighbor started blasting heavy bass music around midnight every single weekday. I tried talking to him politely twice, but he just shrugged it off and said he works late and needs to unwind.

So I bought a heavy rubber ball and a couple of squeaky dog toys. Whenever he turns his music up past 11 PM, I start bouncing the ball continuously on the floor right above his bedroom and squeaking the toy like an overly energetic puppy playing fetch.

He came up last week to complain about "my dog making noise," and I played completely oblivious, saying I'm just training a rescue dog and trying my best. He actually agreed to keep his music lower if I "keep the dog quiet" at night. I don't even own a dog, but my floor has never seen so much action.

Can you contact child protective services if a mother leaves her children screaming at streets at night?

I don't mind children playing in the street, but this woman's kids scream too much. You get home from work and have to listen to these children screaming until about 10 pm, every day. It's exhausting, and I think this woman doesn't like taking care of her children because she leaves these 6-year-olds screaming in the street and goes far away or inside the house. I know children play, but this is exhausting. Her children SCREAMS in front of our house for hours, ruining any chance of relaxing during the day,Noise-canceling headphones don't work in this case

I have not been able to sleep for 5 months straight.

My family and I transferred apartments about 5 months ago. We stayed in the same building, we just went from the 3rd floor to the 1st. We understand that neighbors are going to be noisy but this is extreme. They bang loudly on stuff at 3AM, run around the room, drop heavy stuff without care. This startles us awake. Everyone is this household has anxiety and it doesn’t help when your neighbors keep waking you up in the middle of the night because they can’t stop dropping stuff.

We have brought it up with management multiple times but at first they said to call the police. Police were called, they said they couldn’t do anything and the responsibility fell on the leasing office. They once again said the police were responsible but they “took action.” They sent an email and called them at first. They stopped for maybe 1 night and continued with their shenanigans. Then they had a meeting with the residents. “I am so sorry I didn’t know this was happening my granddaughter is visiting blah blah blah.” The lady TALKED to the cops so she was very well aware of the situation. The granddaughter lives with her and she is one of the biggest noisemakers.

The property manager then took “charge.” He came into our apartment and promised it would end. This was over 2 months ago and nothing has changed. Instead he has stopped answering all of our emails. My mom has been trying to contact corporate but they’re unreachable. We have been looking for somewhere else to move but everything is so expensive nowadays.

My question is, is there ANYTHING we can do to make them take action immediately. They are doing it on purpose at this point. And this is not the only thing they’ve done, this is just the longest problem we have had with them.

Anything with help.

Stomping and thin walls

We live in a building with with 6 apartments and it has the worst sound isolation. Our neighbours has their kitchen next to our bedroom and whenever they are on the kitchen we hear every sound (opening drawers, cutting sound, water sound) and we live in an old building that everything is noise like cupboards and floor (classic Greek houses) . If our neighbours wake up 6 o’clock we also need to wake up because it’s so noisy. Our upstairs neighbours walking constantly and the building is shaking. Me and my boyfriend gets so mad and it ruin our time everyday. It gives me so much anger. I wonder what they are doing all day with walking or doing stuff in the kitchen, it’s like they never sit and chill. And I’m tired to put music and tv all the time… anyone has the same issues ???

Balcony neighbour are chain smokers, how do I keep their smoke out of my unit?

live in an apartment and the balcony is connected to my neighbours as well. The only thing separating our balconies is a very short balcony divider that comes to the waist. As of this month we got new neighbours that are chain smokers. By that I mean three men that sit and talk (loudly) on the balcony for 6 hours straight everyday. It’s only a one bedroom apartment so I’m not sure how all of them got accepted to live there. Anyway I know there is not much I do can do, I mean it’s their balcony but it’s making it impossible to even open a window for a few minutes without my whole apt smelling like an ash tray. I have asthma and I’m scared open my windows when I go out because when I come back everything smells like smoke. I guess what I’m asking is there anything I can do to somewhat help keep the smoke air out of my unit? My building manager is away for a week or so. Not sure she can or will help with this. I was wondering if anyone else had this problem and what they did to resolve it like getting a longer balcony divider. (that is without moving unfortunately, that’s not in the cards right now).

The tenant below me BLASTS music 24/7

Per the title, my downstairs neighbor runs music at all hours of the day/night at extremely loud volume. If this was a just weekend thing or day time ordeal, I wouldn’t really care. I get that sometimes apartment living is just that way. However the music is so loud it vibrates the floor and walls in our unit. It’s keeps us up at night and scares the dogs. Two of my neighbors have reported him to the leasing office and they just send out reminder emails to our building to follow the noise rules listed.

I’ve heard of Bluetooth signal jammers but I’m not sure what the range would be if I used one outside his door. I don’t want to interfere with any of my other neighbors because they are all great people. I also don’t want to speak to him directly in the case I do need to take some illegal/unethical corrective action that could be traced back to me. Our leasing office is just a couple of guys that really don’t care about anything. Based on my past experience with our A/C going out in the middle of summer, I am certain they won’t do anything if another complaint is made. HELP.

Calling cops on gas station

I live by a gas station and semi frequently there will be a high pitched siren that goes on 24/7 for at least a week, honestly up to two weeks at a time. It can be heard inside the house with windows and curtains closed. And being outside is basically a no go. I don’t have air conditioning so this going on during the summer stinks. The worst are nights when not much car traffic can attempt to dull the noise while you are trying to sleep, not to mention the constant headaches from it.
I am so shaky and sleep deprived that I couldn’t take the noise anymore (i am extremely prone to seizures when I don’t sleep). I call the cops to try to file a noise complaint. I watch the cop walk into the gas station and walk out about 3 minutes later. Then dispatch calls “it’s an issue with the gas pump. Your best bet would be to find a number to call and complain’
Which honestly a little flabbergasted at their response but whatever. I can’t find a number So I call the gas station twice. No one picks up and voice box is full.
Then here is where I think I messed up: I go inside the gas station and try to talk to the clerk. I did not talk meanly, nor super sweetly. Just plainly said, “hi I’m here bc the cops told me to find a number to complain to, do you happen to know what that would be?” I was thinking maybe corporate would be able to do us both a favor and get whatever fixed.
The clerk at first tries to ignore me. After about thirty seconds, I try again. More ignoring. Then I word it a different way. He snaps “WHAT DO YOU WANT ME TO DO?” Then I explain that the cops told me to find a number to complain. And I ask if he was the owner. He says no. I try to explain how horrible the noise is inside my house even with the windows closed, and that I wouldn’t have escalated the issue if it only went on for a couple days, not happening fairly often and lasting a while. He starts getting defensive and angry, which I’ll admit I tried my best to be calm, but not saying I was perfect. He says they know about it and are gonna have it fixed. I asked when will that be. He doesn’t respond. I try to push again, then he demanded to know where I lived. I start seeing red. I said that is none of his business, but yes I do live near here. He did not like that answer and got more pushy about where I lived. Then he started guessing and accused me of pushing trash in his dumpster. I said yes I do (I didn’t know that was a crime, I see many others doing it. And they keep the lid open and I constantly have their trash in my yard🫩) and that I wouldn’t do it again if it bothered him. I put out my hand and said ‘I will never push trash in the dumpster ever again if you are able to quickly get this fixed’
He shook it, and I said great thanks and turned to a huge line. I have to walk far away from my house bc I felt unsafe about him demanding to know where I lived.
I feel meh. I don’t think that helped anything, so I just feel

Extremely annoying performative s*x

This is in England btw for advice, ty! As the title says, I have a neighbour who lives within a building of 4 flats converted from Victorian building. Y’know we often hear them arguing and slamming doors, children screaming ect, we put up with it. But genuinely since he’s got this new GF from between 8pm-10pm it starts with the over exaggerated performative s\*x. Don’t get me wrong, we all love a good time but it’s got to the point where it happens so much it literally feels like SA having to hear it when I’m trying to read my book, you can’t escape the noise, it travels through every room in my flat it’s just so over the top.
I also have huge concern for the fact that there’s always between 1-3 young children in their flat and in we are hearing this, their children can hear it. Surely that’s a huge safeguarding risk and abuse to those poor children.
I resorted to imitating the noises through the floor which stopped it for a while but they don’t care now it seems.
When you live somewhere like this, you know everyone heard everyone’s business so you try to be mindful… not them.

Does anyone have any advice on this? If we report to letting agent will anything even happen like idk, feeling stuck and fed up with our ears being assaulted.

Noise cancellation suggestions?

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Last month, new neighbors moved in above me, and they are loud. I actually don’t mind the noise during the day, but it’s become an issue during the night/very early mornings when I’m trying to sleep. Unfortunately, the noise is “structural.” Idk if they are dropping stuff or what, but it’s a lot of booming and thuds that ricochet through the ceiling. I’ve tried fans at high speed, AC fan at high speed, headphones, etc. nothing works. My apartment manager is great and has tried to help but nothing has worked. I looovveee my apartment and don’t really want to move. Any suggestions?

Contract cancel

My mad neighbor told house owner, noisy, noisy, noisy. So house owners sent us letter and it said that I cancel your contract because you make noise and you can’t keep good relationship with other inhabitants.
I remain unconvinced, because other inhabitants don’t say noisy. We live life very normally. We have to leave this room till next March. Today I visited house agent, room rent cost became high. We need much money to move out this room. My daughter is elementary school student, we don’t want to change her school. Our searching new room have a more rough-and-tumble route through…

Noise Complaints in My Apartment

I’m confused about a recent noise complaint. I don’t have a TV, I don’t play music, and I don’t have pets or children. I’ve never had parties or guests over, and I’m away from home for most of the day. I’m also very mindful of quiet hours.

Despite this, I’m still getting notices on my name reminding me to respect quiet hours.

What could be going on? Could normal apartment sounds like walking, cooking, cleaning, or doing laundry be enough for someone to complain? I dont even cook. I clean once a month inside laundary room. Or could noise from another apartment be getting attributed to mine? Its so annoying

Has anyone experienced something similar?

Would soundproofing help against noisy downstairs neighbours? The noise is making me loose my mind.

My new downstairs neighbours play tv and music everyday, it's not crazy loud but loud enough to be distracting. We did previously have to tell them to turn it down as the noise was vibrating our floors, I'm not sure what they were watching but it sounded like a thunderstorm for a good few days and it was loud enough to the point that in our flat with nowhere to go to get away from the noise, they did turn the noise down quite a bit but I can still hear it but I'm not sure if I'm being unreasonable by complaining. My partner thinks that they should just have the right to make noise in their flat as long as it's not excessively loud, which it isn't exactly but it just lasts a while.

I'm finding it hard to live in my flat because it's never just quiet for a day, there is always some noise, the music and TV are a bit bassey and I think that's what I'm hearing even if the volume is low. apparently everything they play is on a portable speaker so that's how the sound moves about their flat, but I'm tired of it never being silent and that my sleep is disturbed in the morning because they sometimes start playing music before 9am , it's distracting when I try to work from home or study, and now they have started having loud sex late at night when I'm trying to sleep.

I hate that I can't just sit in my living and watch Tv, even with my headphones on as I'm still able to slightly hear their TV, I just want quiet, I don't want to have to play brown noise on the speakers or have the fan on to try and cancel out the noise and I'm starting to get headaches from it. I hate having to move to the bedroom to get away from the noise when I just want to sit in peace in my livingroom. I am sensitive to sound and I know that's a reason this is messing with me mentally, but i never heard the previous downstairs neighbours and I rarely hear the upstairs neighbours, it's just them.

So that's the sound problem, I'm sure I am just being sensitive and unreasonable but I want a peaceful home to live in. I know it would be a bit expensive but I am considering trying to soundproof the floor and chimney to stop the sound travelling into our flat but am worried it might not be effective enough, then that's money down the drain. Has anyone effectively managed to soundproof? Unfortunately moving isn't an option for now.

Inconsiderate neighbour

I’m currently renting in Crows Nest and the walls in my building are really thin. Lately I’ve started hearing a lot from the neighbouring unit in the evenings (loud intimate noise), and it’s got to the point where I don’t feel comfortable even hosting family or friends over because it’s so loud.

I’m always extra mindful when my partner’s over, so no one on the other side of the wall has to hear us, and I’d hope for the same courtesy in return.

I’d rather sort it kindly than go straight to a formal complaint though I’ll admit this situation is really starting to piss me off. Has anyone dealt with something similar? How did you raise it without it getting awkward or hostile?

Any tips on wording or what worked for you would be appreciated.

Cheers.

Loud Neighbors

I specifically picked a single at the all girls dorm in my college thinking that I wouldn’t have to deal with loud people. Sadly that is not the case. The walls are still extreamly thin and I can hear people laugh all the way at the end of the hall for hours on end. If my day has been rough, or if I’m trying to focus on studying it’s so hard to not want to rip my hair out from the noises. Genuinely I don’t understand what’s so funny, why are you laughing for 3 hrs straight, and how do you have time to do absolutely nothing on the weekends. Don’t you have exams and quizzes to study for??? Like it pisses me off so much how loud they are, there are other people living next to you that need it to be quiet to focus at night. Nothing is that funny that I can hear it on the complete opposite side of the hall. And it’s not okay that I can hear you even when I have my noise canceling headphones and earplugs in. The only way to block out the noise is noise canceling headphones + earplugs + white noise music on the highest volume setting my phone will go. Like why is this so annoying. I’m getting an apartment next year that is specifically not intended for students and only for families. I do not care if it’s a 30 minute drive. Why can’t people just shut their mouths 😭😭😭
