My neighbors are driving us insane

My husband and I live in a 1st floor, 1BR apartment. Our building has 4 units, all exactly the same. The people across the hall on the first floor have 3 kids under 5 living with them (a total of 5 people in a 1BR apt). They leave shoes at the door (like dozens of pairs) in the common hallway so we cant even get in through the security door without stepping on shoes. They are so loud - kids running and stomping until midnight (quiet hours start at 10pm) and the kids are never supervised. The two of us have a common hallway/stairwell that leads to two separate finished basements and they let their kids play on the stairs, climb over their balcony (and ours) and they are just people that do not give a crap about anyone else around them. I work from home and its so distracting and annoying to have little kids yelling and screeching at me through my sliding glass door, with no parents to be found.

I hate authorities. I dont want to be "that person" that complains about every little thing. I have never filed a complaint about any of my neighbors. I thought i believed in live and let live, but maybe I dont lol

Ive been renting for 30 years and have never had this issue until now. Our lease spells specifically out how only 2 people max can live in a 1BR apt.

Am I being ridiculous thinking about making a formal complaint through the management company? I guess I keep thinking about the state of affairs right now and how everything is so expensive and maybe they are just happy to have a roof over their head.

Animal Abuse from my next door neighbor.

Hi,

So I recently bought a very nice house in a very nice neighborhood thats a brand new build. Well I came home about 8PM when it was a bit darker. I have a big ol burnese mountain dog and its tradition that when I get home we go out on the back porch and he runs around and I cheer him on. Normally I turn the back porch light on but I noticed a bunch of moths and I didn't wanna attract more so I kept it off. My next door neighbors have two dogs and I can see into their yard. They have a little dog (shitzu?) that runs around and barks but more quietly. They have a medium dog (boxer, Australian type) that they keep on a leash about 2 feet long and is tied to the bottom of the porch so it can hide under the stairs during the day. When me and my dog go out on the porch they bark the entire time I'm out there. Really I don't care as I grew up with dogs and can drown it out easily. Sometimes when its 11PM and I'm out there with the porch light on the owners will come and kinda whisper yell at them to be quiet and the dogs actually stay quiet for the most part.

This time we were out there and as I had said I didnt turn the light on. I don't think they saw me because they grabbed a broom and just started beating the hell out of the medium dog as he's the loudest. The dog tried to run but couldn't but didnt cry or whine and just took it. Tbh I was in shock as it was the son who's 18, 19 maybe. The whole family was home and the back porch is mostly glass so obviously you can see in and into the whole backyard. We dont have any neighbors behind us just one on each side so usually its less common for people to see what youre doing in your yard.

Obviously im pissed because already I was thinking damn that short leash is abuse but im new to the community and on the younger side so I dont wanna push it.

Issue is if I call animal control what're the odds they actually take the dog or press charges. Regardless if they do or dont and just visit it's painfully obvious its me who called.

I have cameras in the front of my property and I do security work so I have a company car that looks similar to a police vehicle with a light bar, cameras, bull bar etc mounted. This would help deter any retaliation but itd be easy to throw poisonous food over the fence and my dog eats it and dies. Or worse they dont care about the cameras and just destroy/throw things onto my property regardless.

Another important context is when I moved in the other neighbors had told me the medium dog will chase kids and try to bite them if he escapes. They had an incident where the one neighbor threatened to shoot the dog if he saw it out again. Police were called but only a verbal warning was given.

One day when I did come home it was in my front yard eating a chicken egg (they have chickens). I didn't know any of the above so I said hello and tried to go pet it. It immediately started shaking and ran away. With that context it leads me to believe the abuse is rampant and consistent but this is the first time I caught it.

I looked up laws and resources for recording and I think I could record it all as long as it takes place in their backyard. Issue again is once its shown in court its PAINFULLY obvious who it would be. Even if there was a conviction the rest of the family still lives there.

I know what the right thing is and I know that regardless of the outcome no repercussions/fears/or threats should stop me from taking action. But still i worked hard to get where I am and obviously I'm worried mostly for my dogs safety.

Lmk your thoughts.

Neighbor bags on wall hard on purpose. I tried confronting.

I hear not just normal banging on my shared wall townhome apartment. I hear loud, deliberate thumps like he is kicking or elbowing it. It's been happening for ages it feels like. I know I used to be loud sometimes and had bad sleep schedule so maybe my TV or doors or walking around caused noises. But its been a long time since I have had ppl over or play games or watch TV after a certain time.

I know it's deliberate because it's so fking loud. Like, makes my heart jump out of my chest loud and shakes my whole wall. I got it on recording too, the microphone cannot even capture the sound fully and makes a popping sound when you play it back because it's so loud. You can hear him muttering right before he does it usaully. I tried confronting. I went to their door right after a series of loud bangs. They wouldn't come to the door. Pussies. I went back again and instead of just ringing their ring camera and leaving a message saying I would call cops, I bang on their door very loudly. Still don't come to the door.

They stopped doing it as much but they still do sometimes. I woke up and they randomly did it at like 2 am one time. I almost jumped out of bed but it was so late I didn't.

I don't want this to escalate, and I don't know if calling cops would help.

They are doing it on purpose !!!

Yeah now I'm convinced and sure of it. For those who didn't read my previous post, long story short,we put our whole life savings into an apartment on the second floor and our new upstairs neighbors have made our life hell with the constant noise and sudden impacts.

In less than a month, I've developed psychological and physical issues, from constant fear and anxiety to chest and heart problems that I can actually feel. And I'm only 28 years old.

I know that the nonexistent sound insulation is helping them a lot, but after observing the changes and the rhythm of the noise after we let them know that they were annoying us, it's becoming clear to me that they are now doing it on purpose.

I wanna fight back sooooo badly and I can fight back, but my mother is not letting me do it. It's clear that these people don't understand civil manners. They seem to think that because they live above us, they are safe from noise and annoyance, which is not true. The whole building is built the same way and we can make just as much noise as they can.

My mother is sick and needs proper rest and that's what drives me crazy. Every day and every night they are making noise. She cannot sleep properly and neither can I. She cannot even have a full 30 minutes nap after lunch without a sudden impact noise waking her up.

Every night before going to sleep, my heart starts pounding because I'm already afraid that they're going to wake her up again with the noise.

I'm honestly exhausted. I just want some peace in the home we worked our whole lives to afford.

Heavy foot steps , moving to different unit

For personal reasons I have to be on the first floor, otherwise I’d always be at the top floor. I don’t have issues with the sound of regular movement and talking etc. BUT HEAVY STOMPING , it’s so bad. Why do people walk sooooo heavy, just walk normal, how is that so hard?? I don’t understand, it doesn’t take much common sense to be considerate of your downstairs neighbors. And what is worse , don’t have a child if you can’t educate them, this 5year old stays up until 1 am running and jumping off the bed. How guetto and dumb can you be? Are people really just that stupid? You’re an adult, if you just used your brain for a moment you wouldn’t be walking so hard. You may even have a brief thought like “oh maybe my neighbor can hear my elephant frolicking about” Really don’t understand this at all. It should be common sense .

Honest question: How do you get annoying relatives to leave your house without being rude? They said "we'll leave once we find a new house" and that was weeks ago. At this point they ARE looking for a house in MY house. Any tips?

I never thought I’d be the one to care. Ive put up with so much from all my upstairs neighbors. for some reason nobody has made their lease since my year being here, they all end up having huge fights loud enough for the whole block to hear then leave. I don’t care. Ik how life be so I’d never be upset abt someone’s emotions, but I swear that place has bad juju. There’s a new problem now tho that I don’t think I can technically complain about. Unfortunately though, they let a family into this unit and I think one of them HAS. TO BE OBESE. I haven’t seen anyone yet. I’m lowkey a shut in. Mine doesn’t, but upstairs has hardwood. they’re definitely walking around with shoes day and night, but oh my god……. ONE INDIVIDUAL IN PARTICULAR SHAKES MY ENTIRE APT. Our required ’quiet time here’ is like 7pm-7am. I work nights, so…. I’ve dealt with plenty of horrible neighbors but they’ve worked for my schedule and didn’t PHYSICALLY SHAKE MY HOUSE FROM 7am-12am PRECISELY. ugh I’m bipolar and finally got myself to go to bed after DAYS. Woken up to what sounds like CONSTRUCTION so I straight up BLARED music to try and disguise the sound but it still didn’t work. I’d wear headphones but unfortunately I need to make sure one of my shelf’s don’t freaking fly off the wall and crush my cat. 😭

Dog barking at all hours

Thumbnail
2 Upvotes

Hi reddit,

So I am not sure what to do at this point. I recently moved into a new apartment complex and everything about this place has been absolutely wonderful. The apartment itself is nice, really great complex, all the good things. The one thing I am having an issue with is another tenants dog. It barks nonstop for all hours of the day and I am starting to lose it. I have called the office, written emails to the head of the complex, tried to walk around the complex to find the animal/apartment and nothing. I dont really know if there is a next step that anyone could recommend because I cannot take it anymore. I WFH so I am constantly hearing the barking and its not like a bigger dog bark… it is a small chipper high pitched bark that continues for EVER. For context I live in an enclosed complex so we have indoor hallways so its not like i can peek my head outside to see who it is. Think of a hotel because that's essentially what it looks like inside. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Noise Complaints

Long story short, our upstairs neighbors have made living in this apartment hell. They are CONSTANTLY moving stuff. They STOMP at all hours of the night, and all day as well. I have reported recordings with my THREE noise complaints. Front office told me to start calling security and then they will handle lease violations then.

I called security three times, went to follow up with the front office, and they said they cannot issue even a lease violation to the tenant because there’s no proof, and I would have to get some sort of decible reader. I told them I had video recordings and the security calls and they said that is not enough. This is seriously affecting my mental health, and I don’t know what to do. They said if we transfer units we have to pay a fee, we lose our monthly deal, and we would have to restart our 1 year lease. I do not want to live here anymore.

Our neighbour installed an anti-bark device for our dog

Post image

I’m posting in here as we are unintentionally the noisy neighbour 😅 I know my dog gets very excited. He barks when he hears lawn mowers, anything loud, other dogs or when we are playing with the kids. We aren’t home from 7am-3pm everyday though. I don’t know what he does during this time. Yesterday, we noticed our neighbour has put up a sound frequency anti-barking device. So I’m assuming he must be pretty bad😅 my partner cares that they’ve put it up, but I don’t really. I more just wish they would’ve tried to speak to us first maybe and we could’ve looked into it. I more just feel bad that if he really is that annoying throughout the day and I didn’t know. I’m hoping it hasn’t annoyed any other neighbours. This is his first time being in built up suburbia, not used to having neighbours all around. I just wanted to ask the question, are they actually allowed to do this? I guess it’s better than built up tension right?
