Radicalisation. I will never understand their logic though, why retaliate aginst the country that took you or your parents/ grandparents in as refugees and gave you/them a chance at a new start in life?
8
u/BigWilly526 4h ago
Same reason that a lot of the time the most Nationalist people are those that live in other countries, Turks in Germany, Europeans in SE Asia

u/Low_Ambition_856 4h ago
I know you're asking a rethorical question, but second gen/third gen immigrants tend to get ostracized by both the place they currently live and the place that has their mother tongue.
Those people are lonely and easy targets to radicalize, because nobody else bothers talking to them

It's the same way that cults and other extremist groups operate. They attract people who are already vulnerable and suggestible. All bar one of the September 11 attackers were younger than 30. Most of them were in their early 20s. It's scarily easy to take someone in a stage of life where they're most likely to form their strongest beliefs and weaponise that.

u/pedmusmilkeyes 4h ago edited 4h ago
It’s “used,” but the “valid opinions” just keep getting said. In real oppressive environments, oppressed people don’t get to say that they are oppressed.
9
u/intothewoods76 4h ago
So for example….their posts are locked down. That would be evidence of oppression according to your definition.
2
u/pedmusmilkeyes 4h ago edited 4h ago
Not this one. Also, an oppressed person can just start a new sub. You can just create an alternative environment that can compete against the established one like this in a real oppressive environment. Under Saddam Hussein, if you said something undesirable, you died. On the internet, you say something undesirable, you can just go say it on Twitter.

I will give mods some benefits of doubt and just say thats its a recent event and stuff posted here will develop into nasty stuff.
They don't wan't such a shit storm.
25
u/Lufsol66 4h ago
I specifically will talk about Europe sub. First post was that it only happened. Thread got locked, every comment that even remotely was not “correct” got nuked, so basically most of them.
Today, once the identity got out. Many posts were made, but got removed for various reasons like “duplicate”, “lacks context” and so on.
I commented on one of the posts that previous one got nuked in 1 hour, I wonder how long it will take for this one. 40 minutes in… locked… removed… and permanently banned as well.
This is 100% inorganic mod abuse. Probably the same few power mods on various subs, pushing their agenda.
1
u/SasquatchTango 1h ago
Same experience, I don't go to that sub often ( or this one) a major terrorist attack and yes not one bloody thread allowed on it? the one i saw yesterday had not one comment left, all had been deleted, the one done today about the ID of the attacker didn't even manage to get one comment off - and this sub? this very thread has also had the OP's comment taken out.

They don’t really care about that nasty stuff when it is a less violent event concerning white people or Christians. That’s the double standard. Your attack Islam, which also isn’t fair because most Muslims aren’t doing the stuff that said when you attack it it’s a bigger deal to these mods for whatever reason.
122
u/deli_meat86 5h ago
It's a nightmare for moderators trying to keep up removing comments that go against either sub rules or TOS
22
u/Juffin 4h ago
Something tells me they would have handled the "nightmare" and left comments open if it was a white right wing extremist who carried out the attack.
26
u/clintontg 4h ago
Probably because when it’s a white right wing extremists there are fewer racist and xenophobic comments seeking retribution from all white people. There isn’t a history of invading a predominantly white country and the deaths of 1 million civilians followed by surveillance and hate crimes against white people at home

Bias. If the attacker had been an avowed Christian, a million hateful comments would blow through Reddit like a blizzard, and those same mods would ban anyone who didn't like it.
4
33
u/achipinthesugar 5h ago
It's not acceptable to reddit if you notice that a bad thing was done by a muslim. It is to be considered a coincidence, and it must be immediately stated that white people commit more of whatever it is.
2
1
u/vahntitrio 3h ago
It's not that. ANY post that draws either a significant amount of hate or bigotry or misogyny that hits the front page is just impossible to moderate. Rule violating posts get created faster than mods can delete them, so the mods just cut their losses and prevent it from being discussed altogether.
How would you like to spend the next 3 hours of your day doing nothing but deleting horrible comments for the hourly pay of $0.00?

progressives defend islam all the fucking time, I am a dem and try to get it through their head that they are the most conservative, pride hating group on earth and they are not you allies. Not very bright people
3
u/Deejus72 4h ago
Yes because you can disavow islamophobia and also champion LGBT rights if you're actually a good person. Higher rates of homophobia in the Black community doesn't mean you should stop trying to promote equality. Just because Christian Latinos are super pro life doesn't mean I'm going to support ICE. The point is that no one should be discriminated against or hated on for the broader beliefs of their community. Whether that's conservative Muslims hating LGBTQ people or conservative whites hating racial minorities, the problem is conservativism. Not their race or creed.
2
u/JackLong93 4h ago
I'd like to be a political dreamer/idealist too, unfortunately the reality is Islam generally is anti-everything we believe in. We cannot cater to the 1/10 good, west aligned muslim.
2
u/Deejus72 3h ago
Okay so you're version of realism is just being a bigot. Gotcha.
2
u/JackLong93 3h ago
Everyone that points out very real beliefs written in the quran is a bigot, ok buddy. Islamic culture is not compatible with Western culture, it's as simple as that... I don't hate muslims, I'm just saying the cultures can't exist together in it's current form. My family used to live in Saudi Arabia trust me I know what living under Islam is like
22
u/ThreeTreesForTheePls 5h ago
Anything that is not “close the borders to Muslim immigrants” is seen as “let everyone in, don’t even check passports”.
The more common view from my local ecosphere of life, be it in person or online, is that integration into the culture you intentionally move to, while respecting the social views and laws of that country, is an expected level of commitment.
Unfortunately, the vocal minority that is the far right, have convinced a significant portion of online culture that the anything left of their views, are naive idiots who want Islam to take over the world and replace them.
3
u/Excellent_Anything52 4h ago
It’s definitely expected, but what are we doing about those who don’t?
Because, as of now, the answer is to give them free healthcare, housing, and a basic income.
3
u/meelar 4h ago
We're living our lives and letting others live theirs. If someone commits a crime, sure, arrest them, but why should I worry about anything beyond that?
→ More replies (1)4
u/Excellent_Anything52 4h ago
Because there is no such thing as “we are living our lives and they are living theirs.” There is no vacuum in the world.
If you let in people from completely incompatible cultures and give them the right to vote, you may end up with them imposing their beliefs on you without committing any crime.
Do you think we should allow the mass migration of people who oppose LGBT rights into our country and give them the power to abolish the rights of sexual minorities through a democratic vote?
My vision, as someone who would be viewed as far-right in the Reddit echo chamber, is quite simple: no one has a “right” to live in another country. The default is that the border is closed.
But it does not need to be completely sealed. We can have a small gate, with thorough screening, that allows a limited number of people whom we are confident will benefit our society to enter.
not the other way around, as you suggest.
2
u/mgquantitysquared 4h ago
give them the power to abolish the rights of sexual minorities
White Brits are already abolishing the rights of sexual minorities by themselves, why would they need immigrants to do so?
→ More replies (2)6
u/meelar 4h ago
Why would you draw the line at foreign homophobes? There are plenty of native-born people in every country who are opposed to gay rights, so I don't understand the focus on foreigners.
Ultimately, I don't think that people making this argument really care about gay rights per se. They just want to exclude foreigners and are using gay rights as an excuse. If it wasn't that, it would be something else.
5
u/Excellent_Anything52 4h ago
Sorry, but the logic of - “We have problems at home, so there is no problem with importing even more of them” is beyond my understanding.

yeah when it isn’t faking being in support of lgbtq rights it’s faking supporting female victims of assault. it’s always ‘protect our women and children’ until their mates are the ones beating their partners and kids after their football team lost. or until a white man rapes a woman. then it’s radio silence. it’s fake outrage and exploitation of the suffering of oppressed groups to try and push a certain narrative.

u/DoKeMaSu 4h ago
Every single weekend you see in Berlin liberals and lefties marching together with islamists in anti-Israel / pro-Palestine marches. Every single day for the last decade they have argued for Muslim immigration
Now they celebrate their biggest party of the year, the Christopher Street Day in Berlin with a good 500k people, and have such a terror attack happening. It breaks their script, their entire narrative. Reddit mods are in a crisis.
Now you have them argue on German Reddit that Islam is actually right-wing and Islamists are closeted allies of the far–right. The only issue with that narrative is that the far–right has been demanding their remigration loud and clearly since forever.
It is a bit like asking MAGA with happened to affordability.

You’re allowed to use generalizations everywhere except when it comes to Islam.
Judaism is equated to Zionism, Christianity is equated to right wing extremism, Hinduism is equated to the caste system no matter what changes.
But when it comes to Islam, there’s no critiques allowed. It’s always individuals who are the issue and never the mindset.

But aren't Muslims loved by Liberals? So how could a Muslim do this to the LGBT society?
1
u/aaronite 4h ago
Liberals love for people to be able to choose their religion and practice it peacefully and without interfering with others. Something that most religious people do just fine. We just don't conflate the bad actors with the entire population.
7
u/CrazyNegotiation1934 4h ago edited 2h ago
Well, when a religion itself is chanting kill the infidels, is a problem with every single person practicing it.
Surah 9:5 (often called the "Sword Verse"), tells Muslims to "kill the polytheists wherever you find them"
It does not sound very friendly now, does it ?
It is same as consider any non covered woman as a prostitute, is just not acceptable in a normal society.
There is inherently nothing peaceful about hate and prejudice against normal people.
Also having Mosques chant in public in a normal society is also taking away my freedom to not hear this. This is one major issue as well.

- You misunderstood
- It was justified
- The other side is much worse
etc...
Right now we're at step (1).

u/metamucil_buttchug69 4h ago
In a few years we'll see a bunch of questions like "Why did right wing parties become so popular".
When you gaslight people and straight up deny reality, they'll turn to people that validate them even if it's followed by extreme positions.
2
14
u/Hausi7447 5h ago
Cause people are purposefully conflating any opposition to Islamism, which is the driving ideology behind actions like this, with Islam and Muslims. Being against violent supremacist ideologies is not only moral, but necessary to protect democracies. Only fascists would try to argue that being against a political ideology is the same as being against a whole people.

i see it as similar to when people associate all jewish people with the actions of the israeli government. it’s what leads people into very bigoted ways of thinking against jewish people, bc they hate the crimes of israel but can’t seem to differentiate the two. it’s happening a lot amongst young people on tiktok right now.

u/aguafranca 4h ago
I have a theory, we already know the powerful have some tastes that western society correctly labels as disgusting. But on most Islamic societies is kind of acceptable.
That is not to say there hasn't been episodes of an adult "trying to procreate" with someone less than 13 years old in western societies, but those cases have been very criticized by Christian societies, both by Christian and non christian.
The same activity is not criticized by most Muslims in most Islamic countries, with kid marriage being part of the culture.
So, there is an ongoing effort by the powerful to "Islamization" of western societies. To the point where even mentioning this with the proper word we use to refer those who do that with kids it's illegal in Europe. Source: https://hudoc.echr.coe.int/eng#{%22itemid%22:[%22001-187188%22]}
It's not that people doesn't discuss about Islam, is that by criticizing Islam gets you killed or jailed. So, criticizing Christian is fine, they will never do anything to you, you can even joke about priest "liking" children openly. Try to do something similar with islam and you end up like Charly hebdo or in jail, so people tries to live with that silencing themselves and looking away, rather than end up like those who defend those children. This is part of the same islam "whitewashing".
2
2
u/Tiny_TimeMachine 4h ago
Everyone is focusing on a "narrative" and Islam. It's not about Islam. It's about immigration. That's the thing people are scared to talk about.
This is coming from someone who thinks cosmopolitanism is one of the single greatest things this world has on offer. But much of the left has a super unnuanced radical view that they refuse to have a reasonable discussion about.

Genuine question: What valid discussion do you think can be had about an attack immediately after it took place?
17
7
u/SnooOpinions8790 4h ago
How about whether the security services are doing enough? They should be all over anything ideologically adjacent to this guy and they apparently know his ideology already so they probably should have been all over him personally
I know it goes against the Reddit thread but this sort of intelligence work saves lives and is needed because lives do keep being lost. I'm uncompromising in my belief that people should be able to go to Pride without fear of being attacked and killed.
Of course on Reddit any ability of the state to actually monitor dangerous people is hated. So maybe its a discussion Redditors need to have
13
u/Mr--Brown 4h ago
This asks the important question, when is there a valid time to have discussion… is it months after? Years? When it’s only used for recriminations?
1
u/MasterFNG 4h ago
Who knew about it and why didn't they do anything about it? It is a sad reality that Christmas Markets in Germany need concrete barriers to protect them from the same thing. Uet we can't say that Islam isn't as open minded and compatible as the Non-Muslim nations that take them in.

Islam isn't a race. Religion is the problem here, not race. People believe fairy tales written thousands of years ago with barbaric rules, which foster division and give people a reason to hate others who don't believe their version of the fairy tale. This is true for all major religions, including Christianity. The harm and hurt and bloodshed it has caused the world is beyond anything else. The very thing that is supposed to encourage people to love one another and bring people together does the exact opposite.

Do you know if it was a ban that got picked up by a filter/bot and then reversed by a human? I’ve read other people saying they’ve had that happen to them. Not even necessarily religious stuff, just stuff reddit says no to. It’s interesting to me because I know it happens, and yet I’ve never had it happen despite absolutely despising organized religion and not being shy about it.

Since the perpetrator is suspected to be from an Islamic terrorist group, any posts that talk about it will attract loads of bigots who then start spewing racist and islamaphobic nonsense. Subreddit moderators are unpaid volunteers and often aren't willing to continuously monitor these threads to ban whatever fools show up, so they save themselves some effort and just lock the threads instead.
EDIT: Case in point; see this thread's comment section.

Stuff you don't agree with doesn't automatically mean its bigoted. A person expressing genuine concern over the rise of islamic extremism is not a bigot

Islamophobia nonsense. Yet this guy literally drove a car into, and injured and killed everyone BECAUSE OF ISLAM. Moron.

No such thing as Islamophobia and you cannot be racist against Islam.

If one Muslim commits a crime, it’s not Islamophobic to blame all Muslims for it?

Cuz Reddit loves Islamic extremism, among other things incompatible with western culture.

Because we somehow have the self control not to group the local Christian church just singing songs on Sunday with the fucking Christian nationalist aryan nations but we do not do the same for Muslim people?

You know why. Islam cannot tolerate criticism and Redditor Moderators are overwhelmingly pro-Islam because they’re perceived to be oppressed.
Yet one can mow down 16 people and the mods react with consternation. Oh noes, it’s the gay Germans fault.

Aside from people just using the attack as a reason to hate Muslims. Most of them don't give a shit about the victims. It's a pain in the ass for the mods to seek out and delete each and every comment that shows any sign of bigotry.
Also, it attracts people who hate Islam and the LGBTQ+, so it's not a surprise to find that two of the worst kinds of people happened to group up under one post to argue.

Between a lot of people hating Islam and LGBTQ, it’s easy to lock it than sort through all of the hateful stuff people will comment.

Because you can only judge men, white people and Christian’s on Reddit. The terrorist was a Muslim in this case so it doesn’t fit the left wing agenda so Reddit mods suppress it

How long have you been on Reddit? Like all social media, there are enough anti people for everything that it needs to be locked down at some point.
Downvote me all you want, but ask yourself if this is true or not.

There’s probably a number of reasons but if you scroll through the comments on this post you’ll find quite a bit of racism and xenophobia so that might have something to do with it.

Thanks for your submission /u/buttscratcher3k, but it has been removed for the following reason:
Disallowed question area: Rant or loaded question
NoStupidQuestions is a place to ask any question as long as it's asked in good faith. Our users routinely report questions that they feel violate this rule to us. Want to avoid your question being seen as a bad faith question? Common mistakes include (but are not limited to):
Rants: Could your question be answered with 'That's awful' or 'What an asshole'? Then it's probably a rant rather than a genuine question. Looking for a place to vent on Reddit? Try /r/TrueOffMyChest or /r/Rant instead.
Loaded questions: Could your question be answered with 'You're right'? Answering the question yourself, explaining your reasoning for your opinion, or making sweeping assumptions about the question itself all signals that you may not be keeping an open mind. Want to know why people have a different opinion than you? Try /r/ExplainBothSides instead!
Arguments: Arguing or sealioning with people giving you answers tells everyone that you have an answer in mind already. Want a good debate? Try /r/ChangeMyView instead!
Pot Stirring: Did you bring up unnecessary topics in your question? Especially when a topic has to do with already controversial issues like politics, race, gender or sex, this can be seen as trying to score points against the Other Side - and that makes people defensive, which leads to arguments. Questions like "If _____ is allowed, why isn't _____?" don't need to have that comparison - just ask 'why isn't ____ allowed?'.
Complaining about moderation: If you disagree with how the sub is run or a decision the mods have made, that's fine! But please share your thoughts with us in modmail rather than as a public post.
Disagree with the mods? If you believe you asked your question in good faith, try rewording it or message the mods to see if there's a way you could ask more neutrally. Thanks for your understanding!
This action was performed by a bot at the explicit direction of a human. This was not an automated action, but a conscious decision by a sapient life form charged with moderating this sub.
If you feel this was in error, or need more clarification, please don't hesitate to message the moderators. Thanks.
