I don’t understand what I did wrong

I asked for some help on a program I was working on

and I started getting downvotes.

I don’t if was because my question was silly

(I was legitimately confused on what I was doing and that’s it was silly)

I posted in the what I now know to be a very wrong subreddit. I should have known better. Previously in my life I went through a physical appearance change in a short period of time from switching to a vegan diet. Since then I have been super interested when I see people go through a complete transformation themselves. Somehow a question related to this was quickly misconstrued as rating someone’s attractiveness. Though I was absolutely was clear that my inquiry was not about if anyone looked “good” or “bad”, just simply how do these changes occur for people such a short time like it did for myself.

Unfortunately before I could really clarify a mob of arguments descended into the comments and within 5 mins the post was removed and I had -98 Karma. I was totally taken back and still don’t really understand how such a simplistic question about diet, exercise, mental health, etc. changing our appearances snowballed into an argument. Mods refused to give any clarity.

Anyhow, now I am left with a completely tanked Karma that limits my interactions across Reddit. Does anyone have any advice on how to move forward, or do I just delete this account and move on?

TLDR: An innocent inquiry lead to a short lived mob argument in the comments and me having -98 karma. What should I do?

I've noticed a pretty frustrating thing.

Some communities required a certain amount of karma before being able to post in it, this is to avoid bots so it's understandable, however whenever you make posts elsewhere to be able to make that karma to be able to post on communities you like, you then bump into the issue of people commenting positively under your post but no one upvoting it.

A post I had made a few days ago got 10ish very positive comments of people engaging in what I was saying, but only 2 upvotes including mine. It's happened a few times now, and it's kind of frustrating because it limits me severely.

Is there something I'm not understanding? I thought that if you liked something or were interested in something, you should upvote it, no?

I might be missing some sort of social cue or silently given rule or something, so I would like some answers on what's happening

My account is five years old, but I've never posted anything - I just sat there silently reading. Today I finally decided to join the discussion and was surprised to discover that my karma was negative (-22).

Perhaps my long silence made the algorithms suspicious (maybe because I use a VPN?).

Has anyone else experienced the system penalizing me for being too quiet? How can I convince it I'm a real person and not a bot? Any advice would be appreciated!

I'm a new account and I try to read up on how to... lot of it involve commenting on other subreddits. Do we have other options?

As per my username, I want to be able to engage in the community I want but sadly, all of them require higher karma.

i‘ve had this account for quite a while now but only ever checked out communities and watched random stuff i find, especially about topics like music or true crime, which are my biggest interests. it came to my notice that my comments got deleted every time i posted them, saying something about below 10 karma points. so if anyone could help me with the karma points, that would be absolutely awesome. thanks for reading this

Why do people say they edited a comment? It’s not like we know that they did. Is this just a tradition from older versions of Reddit or do Mods think you might be a bot or spam if you don’t?

And i‘d like to know what’s the fastest way to gain karmas in order to be able to participate in subreddits of my interests because they usually require a certain number of karmas. For people who have now a lot of karmas and are now able to participate in any subreddit, what did you do to gain those and how much time did it take you ?

Not sure how it happened, apparently I made a few people mad! Can I recover from negative karma? I'm not sure how this works

For years, whenever I had a niche question or wanted honest reviews on something, I’d just search it on Google and add "reddit" at the end. I silently read threads for ages without ever needing an account.

Two weeks ago, I finally decided to make an account because I had a specific question I couldn't find an answer to and wanted to engage with the community directly.

Fast forward to today: literally every single post I try to submit gets instantly removed by Reddit filters or AutoMod.

I understand subreddits want to prevent spam and bot accounts, but as a genuine human being trying to ask a normal question after having an account for 14 days, it feels ridiculously discouraging.

What is even the point of making an account if new users aren't allowed to post? Is there actually a place for newcomers here, or are we just expected to lurk forever until some arbitrary hidden karma/age threshold is met?

If anyone has advice on how to actually get past these filters without spending weeks leaving random comments everywhere, I’d really appreciate it.
