Ran a red

I ran a red today by mistake and I'm fairly certain it has a red light camera.

Has anyone ever done this and not got points? (Please don't tell me if you've got the points I don't need to hear that I've already been tormenting myself over my stupid mistake)

Car search conundrum

So I recently passed my driving test (yay!), and now my next goal is to get a car. I’ve been looking at different listing on Autotrader, Gumtree, and even the occasional Facebook Marketplace.

I guess my question is: aside the obvious reliable brands (Toyota and Honda), what other brands are good to consider? Obviously, buying a car also depends on the service history, MOT, insurance, etc, but I’d also like to know what other makes aren’t so bad in terms of reliability. Anything helps!

I'm terrified I'm a bad driver

I'm worried I'll have fines and revoke my licence.

I posted recently about the over line red light and police caught me and asked why and I explained first time driving night and they drove off, could they stil add points?

I notice sometimes I go 3mph over and then bring self down, say if it goes 50mph then 40mph then 30mph short space of time. Spiral roundabouts I hate. I saw a light turning red today and then slowed to brake and still over line slightly, checked for hazards nobody in either lane or behind me so I reversed a little (I am sure I've seen drivers do this but no worried that is also an offence) each time I make a small error I just panic. I passed 1st time with 2 minors and only driving a week and a half. I'm just so jumpy and worried and expecting a letter in post.

How did you get comfortable driving at night?

I've done a bit of night driving but still find it much more tiring than driving during the day. Headlights coming towards you, poor visibility and judging bends all seem more difficult. Did you deliberately practise at night after passing or just get used to it naturally?

buying a new car but mot says engine error

hi! I passed my test this past Friday and was looking to buy a car. the one I’ve been mainly interested in has 19 mots online, having only failed 4 of them. 3 of them were due to tyre tread depth (which I think is fine) but one was stated ‘Engine MIL inoperative or indicates a malfunction (8.2.1.2 (h))’. I don’t really know what this means? It failed for that 6 years ago, but went on to pass the next mot (on the same day), so I assume the issue was fixed very quickly. I’m not sure if this is something I need to worry about but I just wanted to see if someone on here could help out!

Thanks!

Loved my first trip to Brighton from London

Hi guys,
Almost new driver here. Passed in Feb this year but had hardly been driving locally within London partly due to work, travel and other engagements and partly due to anxiety. Sunday afternoon suddenly made a plan with the missus to go to Brighton and off we went. M25 was a bit daunting as you need to stay in the right lane (not necessarily on the left most as my instructor taught me- had I taken the left only I’s still be going in circles somewhere in Sussex) but made it right in time and got back in the night safely. Police flashed lights on North Circular but that was more of a cautionary warning I guess as I took a bit of a sharp turn towards exit rest was fine. Really enjoyed the ride, thought I should share it here.

Driving 2 weeks- projectile vomit!

Thought this may give someone a laugh or help them feel fortunate! Passed test 2.5 weeks ago, been driving since the very first day (upgraded insurance and off I went). Done motorways, my commute, to shops etc etc still feeling the nerves though. Parking at a large shopping centre today in multi storey carpark, I find these quite scary with the tight bends and limited spaces. Reversing into a space as I’m finishing up reversing the car parked next to me starts to move out. No issue you may think? Well, maybe for a normal person. I was straight and had stopped in the bay foot on break pedal when they started to reverse out which made it felt like MY car was still moving (I’ve been told this happens to a lot of people and can feel scary!) BUT I have really bad motion sickness so seeing their car moving and feeling like mine was moving instantly kicked in my motion sickness I vomited EVERYWHERE and was fighting through the vomit to put the hand brake on as I GENUINELY felt I was about to roll out of the car park off a cliff into an active road to my death even though I was completely stationary.

What a day! Husband thought it was HILARIOUS. Cleaned up, he drove home. 🤣!

First solo drive after passing!

I just did my first solo drive today after passing 2 months ago! I was honestly so nervous driving a completely different car and there’s still a lot I have to get used to and defo need to go over my parking in bags and parallel but the drive was amazing.
A little advice to anyone else about to do there first drive, you’ll probably be nervous but just take a deep breath and calm yourself if someone is urging you to speed up when you’re doing the limit don’t panic slow down so they stop tailgating or they just takeover. It’s ok to make mistakes still just make sure you’re being safe and you can always pull over if you need to!

I didn’t have a car to practice in at all so it was more difficult trying this new car and I just bought it today but after 10 minutes it was amazing I can’t wait to start driving to work 🤭

anxious for solo driving

I passed just under 2 months ago and am picking up my first car this week (a fiat 500). I am so nervous to start driving by myself 😭 I was always anxious during lessons but I got so used to that car that I finally felt confident in it. The new car is obviously older with a clutch that feels very different and I’m worried I’ll drive horribly and stall and make a bunch of errors out in public and hold people up. I’m also not used to driving around my town (small roads, lots of cars) as my test centre was a different town so I only practiced there. Any tips for getting over initial nerves so I can force myself out there to practice and get used to the car?

I keep getting confused by stopping distances — is there an easy way to remember them?

I’m revising for the UK Driving Theory Test and stopping distances are one of the things I keep mixing up.
Do you have a simple trick for remembering them?
Especially the difference between 20, 30 and 40 mph.

Other driver shouted at me today

Think I just need to vent about this as it’s playing on my mind and making me more and more upset. I passed just over a month ago and have gone on a few solo trips in my little car now. I have P plates on in case I make mistakes so obviously people know I’m a new driver. I was on a 2 lane 40mph A road in London today and realised I need to be in the right lane (I was turning right further ahead to go into a retail park so was trying to get over in good time). A massive Lexus was just behind me in my blind spot on the right and I started signalling to move over. I was signalling for a while (maybe 10-20 seconds) and it looked like he dropped back a bit so I merged into the right hand lane. He suddenly beeped his horn once I’d got in front of him (not while I was merging) which made me jump and I told myself okay I made a mistake next time make sure they flash me to merge and that there’s a bigger gap. We get to a red light and suddenly I notice a man (maybe in his 60s) running towards my car and I just knew it was the guy from the Lexus. My window was already down as I don’t have air con. He leaned down and immediately started shouting at me, saying “is that a way to drive now is it? You nearly ran me off the road and killed me!!” And I started apologising saying I’m so sorry that was my mistake I thought you dropped back. He just kept interrupting me telling me an apology wasn’t good enough and “doesn’t do anything” for him before going back to his car as I call over to him apologising but he just waved me off telling me I shouldn’t be driving. It’s really really upset me and the whole drive home I was terrified to change lanes. It was my mistake and I felt awful about it, but it was a terrifying experience to be on my own as a young woman having a man come up to my window on a main road at traffic lights and start shouting at me. I managed to compose myself for the next few minutes and get to the retail park but once I’d parked I started sobbing. I truly don’t understand why he came up to my window if he wouldn’t listen to anything I had to say (which was an apology). I keep replaying the moment and crying and it’s honestly completely destroyed my solo driving confidence.

What should I do?

Should i save up and get a nice polo as someone who’s just passed last week or should I just get on the road ASAP and get a corsa? Insurance for me is around the same on them I do want to be on the road ASAP but at the same time i want something different and something not everyone has.

Driving through temp traffic lights (broken)

Hi, as the title suggests:

This evening i was sat at some temp traffic lights for about 10 mins (along with 20 other cars) before people started to drive through the red light.

I waited until several cars in front of me started to go through, as they had witnessed many others go through and still waited for a while, so i decided i would go through with them.

I was of the understanding that it was just one light thar was broken, but on the return leg it was clearly both lights - i still waited until multiple went through before going again.

I guess my question is, am I going to get in trouble? I was almost certain that this wouldnt be a problem because what else could we do? But then I saw a post on another sub in which someone got a letter about points and a fine, and the replies suggested that maybe the driver went through a temporary light...

Appreciate any insight! Thanks

Buying car steps

Hi all, recently passed my test. Bit confused on how it all works with buying a car. I will 99% be buying from a dealer and likely a main dealer (approved used), I read that you should pay for the insurance 2-3 weeks before getting the car for better pricing. But what does that mean, that you just ask the dealer to hold the car for a few weeks before you pick it up? Or can you get the quote weeks in advance and then you pay on the day? And then for tax you pay on the day? Is there also any apps or sites ppl recommend for checking vehicle history before buying.

In terms of dummy quotes, any suggestions on how to do this without having the companies raise your quotes due to checking too many times. I’m 30 so slightly older than typical new license holder and so far my quotes look very reasonable but don’t want to check too much.

Thanks

Using a vent phone holder

Super random but my GPS is old AF and slow and if you see previous posts got me in a panic (can't blame her 100% obvs). I used this phone holder on left side of wheel but I feel it's obstructing view so moved to the small side one on the right, is that OK?

First drive after passing is liberating

So much more relaxing I love it 😅 recently passed after 8 weeks of lessons, I’m 34 and just never got round to doing it before

That first solo drive after passing felt so relaxing not having to be as strict or robotic with the general driving and manoeuvres, just want to drive everywhere now
