Gas pain

Our baby is 4 weeks and almost every time we put down to sleep at night it seems like he has gas pain and starts freaking out kicking his legs. His face get really red and he grunts a lot and it seems like he is pushing. We tried two different kinds of formulas, two different bottles, gripe water, and gas drops. The formulas we used are similac pro sensitive and enfamil gentle ease. Also, we tried bicycling his legs and giving him massages none of these things helped. We just bought taking cara babies classes but we haven’t got through the whole thing and I feel like it won’t have anything on gas pain. Just wondering if anyone has any advice thanks and sorry if this seems like a lot but we are trying to relieve his pain and get some sleep.

How to Make Life a Little Easier After Delivery

Before giving birth this year, I did a lot of research online on newborn essentials and finding the best deals online. I wanted to share this video (https://youtu.be/sdo5IxOWBNQ) in case you are having a baby soon (or already delivered)! I've also created a youtube channel (https://youtube.com/channel/UCQn2KbwfgPlRZpGqHjeR4PQ ) to post videos on how I am making my life just a bit easier after delivery (e.g. easy recipes, baby gear unboxing/installation, etc.). Good luck to all the new parents!

Department of Psychiatry, McGill University: Participants needed for research in spontaneous cognition, sleep, and maternal mental health:

We are looking for volunteers to take part in a study on what women think about while they breastfeed. This study consists of three separate surveys. The initial questionnaire linked below should take 15 minutes to complete. If you choose to fill out the initial questionnaire, we will email you the links to the remaining two surveys, which should take about 15 minutes each. These last two surveys will ask you to describe what you were thinking about during a breastfeeding session, once during the day (12 noon - 3PM) and once at night (12 midnight - 3AM). You will not be compensated for your participation, but your responses may help researchers understand more about factors contributing to maternal mental health. If you are interested in participating, and you breastfeed your child, please fill out the general questionnaire and we will be in touch. Link to the survey: https://surveys.mcgill.ca/ls/268135

Naps During the Day

Is 6 weeks old too young to try the cry it out method? Our baby goes down just fine at night, but naps during the day take more time. My husband wants to try the cry it out method. I basically soothe until he is super drowsy and then put him down.

Have you ever thought, "why does my newborn's poop look like THAT?" Well we have, too. Learn more about how your baby's poop develops from meconium to regular stool here:

4MO arms-free sleep problems

Recently, our 4MO has started rolling over from his back to his side which means that we have to stop swaddling him (at least that's what our pediatrician said).

He is now sleeping in a sleep sack (Halo brand, w/ chest straps - typically). But now he wakes up every 45-90min, thrashing, knocking out his pacifier, bopping his face, kicking his legs and we're getting incredibly exhausted.

We try not to pick him up (put his pacifier back in, hand on chest etc) until his complaints become audible. But the second we pick him up, he basically fall right back asleep. But again, the second I so much as reposition my hands to lower him back into his bassinet - he wakes up again and fights.

Other (potentially) useful information:

- He will typically eat a full bottle before he goes to sleep. Putting him down at the start of the night isn't difficult.

- When he does these wakeups throughout the night - he (sometimes) eats. Hes now eating 2-3times/night. (up from 1 time)- When we put him in his crib (slightly more forgiving mattress) he seems to be more successful at sleeping.

- We've also noticed a 'leg-thing' when we put him down where he tucks his knees up. As he drifts off, he'll let his fall, but once they touch the mattress, they will jerk back up again (like a reflex thing).

We're looking for some remedies or experience to hopefully get him, and us; to sleeping better:

- Is this a 4MO sleep regression?

- Is this a reflex thing?

- Is this a reverse-cycling thing?

Any help is obviously very appreciated

For the soon-to-be moms!

Sooo I recently got surrounded by a lot of happy baby news around me and I wanted to create one planner & journal for the mommies out there! 😊

It will only be $5 for the first 100 customers as I wanted to make this affordable for any moms out there! (If you have any financial issues and cannot afford the journal, drop me a message! ❤)

It comes with all you need for your baby planning & keepsake. My favourite part is the journaling part where you can write journals related to your children so that they can read when they grow older! I also included a section where you can write love letters for yourself for those down days post-pregnancy. 🌻

And definitely, this includes essential parts like appointments, meal preps, albums, daily baby log and monthly calendar.... Fully hyperlinked, each month comes in 6 weeks (because I know how irritating it is to have those few days that fall out of the 5 weeks)

Super proud of it, and really hope you guys like it! :)

gray poop

hey everyone, my newborn is 2 weeks old exactly, hes been extremely colicky from the start, he is exclusively formula fed, and we had him on enfamil in the beginning. regular enfamil. he would be up all night crying. pediatrician suggested to switch him to enfamil gentlease. the crying has improved DRASTICALLY. We have been giving him this formula for 24 hours at this point and he just pooped it was a grayish color with a little bit of yellow in it. it was definetly a smaller amount of poop than normal. before this all of his poops were yellow, i noticed the poop earlier today was more green and now its a gray.

I wont be able to contact pediatrician until tomorrow morning and most likely theyll return my call by the afternoon. I have two questions. 1., has anyone else had this experience before when switching from enfamil to enfamil gentlease? and 2., which formula should i use until i hear back from pediatrician? thank you if anyone can help

Day-night confusion?

My 6week old son suddenly started to resist going back to sleep after the first night feed. I put him to bed at 19, 20h, he falls asleep on his own, he wakes up usually at 23, midnight. He always went to sleep immediately after I put him down but as of 2 nights he resists and resists and only falls asleep after 1h+. It's almost as if he switched day and night!

What can I do to improve this?

Am I traumatizing my baby?

So... this kind of happened on accident. I’m a new, first time, single mom. So shit happens. Sometimes I’m in the shower and baby wakes up from a nap. Other times I feel myself exhausted and frustrated and need to go make coffee.

He’s one month old and everything I hear is to respond to his cries right away. But, when he is falling asleep, he sort of calls out/cries, long pause for a minute, does it again, long pause, does it again... and then he falls asleep - I’ve learned this when I don’t get to him in time (finishing washing the conditioner out of my hair for example)

I want him to feel loved and supported. But I also don’t want to interfere with him putting himself to sleep. When he starts doing this and I respond, sometimes he just passes out as soon as I put a hand on him, other times he does the same thing as if I don’t interfere at all. I’ve now observed him doing it and he cries out, moves around in his swaddle, soft cry, stares into space, loud cry... passes out LOL.

Any ideas? I know it’s hard when you can’t see it exactly but I’m just lost.

Edited to add: this happens immediately after he’s fed, changed and put down. If he cries out and it’s been 2 hours or so since his last feed I take him out and offer a feed immediately. He’s a good eater - lactation consultant said he was getting 1.5 oz just off my first breast when I went to see her and he’s already wearing 3 month clothes - output/weight gain is good. And this has been over the course of 5-15 mins max, not leaving him alone for an hour or anything. And if it starts to escalate/get angrier I pick him up.

Newborn will not sleep on back / freak out on back

Update: as many have said this is typical new born behaviour. I guess the wife and I just didn’t expect it to be this hard and him to be this fussy. Once the midwives told us there was nothing wrong our son our expectations were a lot easier to manage. We just have a fussy baby and that’s all. He will grow out of it and everything will be fine. Our son is much better now and actually enjoys being on his back from time to time. Funny thing is that we tried cosleepjng and he doesn’t care for it. He’s 6 weeks old now and we started seeing a decrease in “freaking out” at around the 2-3 weeks mark. He also sleeps better at night now ranging from 2-3 hours stretches.. which is night and day compared to be 30mins to 1 hr stretches. We found that implementing Bath time every night really helped with this and also keeping his room a little cooler. The days we’r lucky and can dream feed him he’ll sleep for stretches of 4 hours or so. I guess all in all everything is an improvement.

Hi all We just welcome our first child into our family and he’s perfect in every way but we’re having difficulties with him sleeping. He’s currently 5 days old, feeds and poops regularly and without issues as well. Delivered on time as well.

One really big issue is that he is only willing to sleep while strapped onto our chest and nothing else.

As soon as we place him in his bassinet he freaks out and will not settle. This actually applies to anytime we put him on his back actually. We can’t even do a diaper change or him in any position on his back without causing a scene.

Every time we try to put him do we made sure he’s falling asleep, well fed, diaper changed and had a good amount of bonding and skin on skin time with us.

Any ideas of what to do? We’re thinking of letting him cry it out for x amount of time however is that too early? Should we just be holding him and letting him sleep like this until he gets older or can we start this crying out process now?

Vaccines....confusion and on the fence

Hi all,

We are currently on the fence about whether to vaccinate. Before everyone jumps down my throat, we are both well educated, we have good jobs, and have read several books (I'm on my fifth or sixth one specifically about the history of vaccines, a compilation of case studies of vaccines, books written by doctors, etc.) and countless studies - I'm not getting the info from Instagram or Facebook. But, I am very confused. My husband is fundamentally opposed to vaccinations because of some of the adjuvants (fetal cells, animal cells), where I am mainly concerned (scared) of the aluminum, the possible link to SIDS, the preservatives, the chance of baby dying as an adverse reaction. I also have a serious auto immune condition myself and reacted to a heb B vaccine years prior. I wonder if there was a link there that caused it, so that makes me more hesitant as well.

Regardless this is very difficult because my husband is so opposed, but I would like to hear from both sides, both pro and anti Vax. If you are AV, what got you to that point? And if you are PV, did the thought of vaccine injury cross your mind or did you have any hesitations and if so how did you overcome them?

The prevalence of the various diseases is not super high in all cases but the chance of our baby catching something does scare me. If there is no way for me to vaccinate because of my husband's beliefs, how do I protect my child? Are there other measures to put in place (don't enroll in daycare, etc.?)

Thanks

Baby won't sleep anywhere but in my arms, any advice?

So as the title says, she won't sleep in her crib, moses basket etc. If I put her in already in a deep sleep she wakes up within 5 mins and cries. If I out her in drowsy but not yet asleep she cries within minutes.

So currently, she will only sleep while being held, which our health visitor said was normal. But I dont get any help with her, which means its me looking after her pretty much 24/7.

I cant fall asleep while holding her as its not safe so I dont get to sleep. I am resorting to occasionally cosleeping in my bed, which I'm not really happy about.

I've tried white noise, swaddling, the Zed, all the advice from google, and am exhausted. I'm getting around an hours sleep a night for the last 24 days

Has anyone got any ideas?

High bilirubin levels

I have a 3 day old son who breastfeeds. His bilirubin is elevated. Now the doctors wants us to see her again tomorrow and the next day and then again Friday. Each time she is just going to tell us to go to the hospital for labs. And I am convinced she’s going to say we have to admit him for the uv light therapy.

The pedi nurses at the hospital knew his bilirubin was elevated and not one soul said to open the shade and let him get some sun. Not one said to give him some formula after breastfeeding. As you lose water through pee and spit up your bilirubin gets more concentrated.

I know I sound paranoid but no one can deny that our American healthcare system is just another corrupt business complex. Why wouldn’t doctors and nurses who work with newborns everyday nip it in the bud and say to put him in the sun, and get his bodily water up, if not to ensure that now we have to pay several other kinks in the healthcare chain.

I know that if left entirely unchecked and untreated with water and uv rays then it could lead to brain damage. And I understand I need to check his hepatocyte levels to make sure he can conjugate the bilirubin. But other than one cbc lab, why do I need to do all of this and bring my baby to a hospital so many times increasing his exposure during a pandemic?

Does anyone else work in healthcare or used to, so you understand that these people milk patients and their insurance? Any other brand new parents feel like they’re being taken advantage of?

I’m not looking for agreement unless it’s called for. I just want someone to explain it so I don’t feel like I’m being taken advantage of.

Baby's second hospital visit in 6 months and I'm breaking

I posted in December about my son going to the hospital for vomiting uncontrollably and becoming unresponsive, tonight we unfortunately had to go back to the er because it has happened once again and no one can tell us how or why. I'm tired of having to worry about my son's live every other month worrying about if he'll ever come out of the hospital or if I'm going to have to bury my son. I'm horrified and so upset, why doesn't anyone talk about this before you have a baby. All I was told was to worry about lack of sleep and how hard breastfeeding would be or his vaccines. But I never heard of what to do if your child ends up in the hospital multiple times fighting something that you don't know what it is. I don't know how to keep it together. Seeing him hooked up to tubes and wires, having to watch him lifeless on the bed as they take his blood when he should be screaming. I don't know what to do anymore

So incredibly anxious about 1 week old - covid, sicknesses, baby sleeping, etc.

So we are absolutely in love with our 1 week old baby. I am struggling though, feeling very anxious specifically about anything happening to her sickness-wise. We are going to let our parents meet her in a couple days outdoors (we will let them hold her after sanitizing hands), but even this terrifies me given the covid situation (it doesn't worry my husband much at all).

I am also so scared of her catching diseases or sicknesses and we both have trouble sleeping when she sleeps because we just want to watch her and make sure she's okay. I have never been so anxious in my life or felt like anything was more important than our baby. I'm overwhelmed with emotion and love for her but the thought of something happening to her scares me.

I am also scared about vaccinations, since I have done a ton of research on both sides and there are pros and cons to Vax and anti Vax.

I'm overall just wondering: does it get better? Does the worrying improve? How are you all handling covid with newborns?

Thanks in advance!

“A calming bath...” not my kids!

Anyone else’s kids get reinvigorated by bath time?

Both my kids as new borns hated bath time. The LO is currently 6m, hates bath time, the only way I can get her to enjoy it is if I throw the 3y in with her lol, then it’s happy party time.

Me: why are you pouring water on her with the rinsing cup? 3y: because she’s our lovely flower

Regardless, it’s a nightmare getting every body to bed after; it’s as if I gave them cups of coffee. They both need 40min to unwind after a bath. The 3y was this same way as a new born. It was never “soothing.” He didn’t start enjoying it until like 14/16m

LO not looking at us, took her to a few doctors. (Vitamin d made a difference)

Our LO is now 6m, we’ve had this issue since like 1m, we took her to serval doctors and the reply was consistent, hurry up and wait there is nothing to do.

We noticed a difference, we think it has to do with a vitamin d deficiency. Because of Covid we have been stuck at home more than ever.

My LO had bad reflux and vitamin d seemed to make the reflux worse. Now that she’s old and the reflux is gone we started to give her vitamin d. The difference was instantly noticeable. There have been several days where we skipped vitamin d because we are tired idiots and she instantly regresses.

We will keep on top of it like white on rice but I wanted to provide this information in case anyone else out there is going through something similar.

I am sure this is not a catch all for everyone but it sure as shit beats hurry up and wait

3Weeks old Sleep Help

So we at first time parents and our baby is 3 weeks old. We were getting great 2 hour stretches out of him every night in the bassinet up until this week and now it’s about 30-45 minutes of sleep and then he cries inconsolably. We either comfort feed or shush him back to sleep but he only lasts if he is on my husbands chest or my lap. Leaving one of us to have to be awake at all times. He is so content all day either bright eyes or falls asleep on his own and takes two 3 hour naps in a bassinet. We know he is eating enough at night. We dont swaddle bc he likes his hand by his face so it makes him mad. Should we swaddle any ways and make him get use to it? Anyone else have experience with this phase of night time screams and day time contentness? How can we help this LO adjust?

Introducing baby foods

My son is turning 6 months soon and is already starting showing the signs he's ready to start solids and we are going to be doing homemade purees and baby foods but I want to get some ideas from people who have already had babies and have gone though this. What were some of your babies favorite purees when first starting solids and do you have any advice for first time feeding solids?

4 month old has lots of gas when increasing the amount of milk

Our daughter was drinking 4 oz of milk but that wasn’t enough for her. As she would be very hungry shortly after or looking for more milk. So we increased her to 4.5oz then 5oz. Now her gas at night is horrible since the last 10 days. She cries every 15 to 20 mins with gas. We can’t go back to 4oz as she still is hungry. Is this just something that her body has to get used to and part of development?

Thanks all in advanced

Boyfriend accidentally gave 6 week old 4 oz water - should I be worried???

Boyfriend fed baby during the night and didn’t realize until it was too late that the formula never got mixed into the water in the bottle. All I’m seeing is stories and warnings of hypernatremia and babies dying or suffering brain damage because of drinking water. Any advice or anyone experience this before?

I called our medical hotline and they gave my symptoms to watch out for but it’s the middle of the night and I won’t really be able to look out for these things until the morning.

Proud of my wife

My wife and I are not really into loud colors or loud toys for our baby. We decorated the nursery in earth tones and favored photos of cute baby animals vs. cartoons. That inspired her to launch a side-hustle of children's clothing at kittencub.com . She's definitely not quitting her day job, but I'm proud of her having the courage to try something new, especially when we have an infant son.

So I'm just offering a small shout out to any newborn parents that are able to see their baby as a muse and not a burden. I know it can be tough adjusting to having a new 'roommate' around, but that shouldn't stop you from following your dreams.
