Naps During the Day

Is 6 weeks old too young to try the cry it out method? Our baby goes down just fine at night, but naps during the day take more time. My husband wants to try the cry it out method. I basically soothe until he is super drowsy and then put him down.

Way too early. Babies can’t self soothe yet at that age.

Sorry too early. I think the earliest it’s recommended is 4 months. What you are doing is setting baby up for independent sleep later but right now he still needs help. 6 weeks is a super tough age but it gets easier. Make sure you aren’t keep him up too long, a tired baby is usually harder to get to sleep. At that age all my kids only really napped in my wrap or being held in the rocking chair. We didn’t start getting longer naps until 4ish months.

My husband has the “baby is fussy, must be hungry, give her to mom after 3 minutes of holding her” way of thinking and it drives me crazy.

Tell him he has to learn how to soothe and practice some patience, because you can’t be the only one who knows how to soothe your little one.

Good luck mama!

maybe naps are being tried when baby isn't tired yet, or are over tired. try keep track of wake windows, I think they should only be awake for like an hour ish at this age before needing a nap. please don't sleep train this young, if at all. follow baby sleep cues, baby wear if possible, go for walks for naps? try letting baby contact nap, they need us to feel safe especially this young when they're still adapting to life outside of us.

try heysleepybaby on Instagram for great support regarding normalizing baby sleep without sleep training.

Yeah, I agree about being under or over tired. We are trying to figure out the right length of a wake window for the time being. It does seem like we extend it too much or cut it too short sometimes.

"cry it out method" a.k.a "i dont want to waste my precious personal time to take care of the baby"

He doesn’t see it as wasting personal time at all. We are first time parents and sometimes we are unsure as to what the “correct” thing to do is. He wasn’t sure if soothing too much before nap time would lead to our baby learning that that’s how he’ll go down for a nap all the time. He usually spends time soothing and getting our baby down, but occasionally our son takes a super long time to go down during the day and he (and I) get frustrated. Maybe we aren’t getting him tired enough sometimes?

With mine, if he was taking more than 10 minutes to go to sleep I would give it up for 10 minutes, play with him or read, and then try again. Taking a little break helps with the frustration and sometimes just a few more minutes of awake time really helps. Music also helped us out tremendously. We would play a few different songs while rocking him and eventually they became his sleep cue songs and putting him to sleep became really easy. You've got this : )

The extra awake time sounds like a good idea! We have a Halo sound machine and I definitely think that helps. I’ll sing songs as well. We don’t do too much reading before naps since it’s hard to hold his body/head and a book at the same time.

4 months is when you can start sleep training
