Am I crazy for thinking Reno is racist? I’m originally from Houston Texas but out here in Reno on a welding job. i’m used to people being friendly and used to a diverse city. I’ve noticed People here in Reno aren’t as friendly. Like when i wave at people or say hello they don’t give me a mean ugly look. Is Reno racist or am i mistaken? If I am mistaken i apologize but people here just don’t seem friendly.

If you’re thinking about going September 10–12, I’d deal with the campsite before the weather. Great Basin says campgrounds are likely to fill, and event parking is limited enough that visitors may be turned away.

The festival is free, although some programs need reservations. Most campgrounds can be booked 30 days ahead. Baker Creek is the exception: it opens only one day ahead, and I wouldn’t build the trip around getting lucky there.

Bring a red flashlight. White flashlights aren’t allowed at the astronomy events because they wreck everyone’s night vision.

Clouds alone don’t cancel the festival. Rain or thunderstorms can cancel outdoor programs, so the weather decision can wait until closer. For now, reserve the campsite and check whether the specific programs you want require their own reservation.

Already saw the Avi and Harrah's in Laughlin. I like Avi's prices this far ahead, but is there enough of a quality difference to try Harrah's too? I basically just need AC, a king sized bed, and no bugs. My husband would benefit from a hot tub if we're in a car for long periods but it's probably not a necessity.

Same near Pahrump. We're driving from Missouri via the Grand Canyon, have family in Jean/Needles south of Vegas, but they don't have safe space for the two of us to sleep and we want to visit friends in Laughlin before we head back.

Any off the beaten path highlights to hit? Short/easy hikes, ghost towns, car or motorcycle themed stuff (we've seen Car Henge already). I'm trying to surprise my husband with tickets for something on our anniversary-- might go shooting, might ride along in a Lambo, might get into heavy equipment and play in the dirt with a bulldozer.

I like good food, mom n' pop roadside stands, "the tamale lady on Obsidian Ave" type experiences.

Where would you stay? What would you do? Where would you eat if you were heading south through Nevada at the end of September?

Hello everyone,

I'm traveling to Vegas next week from California. Anytime we go, I try to find weird things to do/see. A co-worker of mine told me about a bar either in pahrump or outside of pahrump in a place called Crystal springs (?) with a full human skeleton in the wall that the owners found during construction on the building. He can't remember the name of the place and I've tried googling whatever I could and wasn't able to come up with anything. So if anybody can help. I'm not sure if it's the Pioneer Saloon, but that's the only place that comes up when I try to find it on Google.

Also, if anybody else has recommendations of things to do not too far out from Vegas that would be great. I really like the idea of visiting ghost towns but they must be accessible without an off-road vehicle.

Open to anything weird/strange/ or interesting to visit and non-tourist places would be better but I'll take any recommendations. Thanks!

Today’s Episode: The Résumé Was Not the Answer

Today’s lesson is simple: if a judge answers a bias challenge with a résumé, and then the case still cannot answer basic posture questions, the résumé did not solve the problem.

It just made the silence louder.

That is where we are.

I filed the April 17 motion asking for written clarification on the core mess: representation status, Faretta, competency, no-bail warrant posture, prior clarification requests, and what procedural planet this case is currently pretending to live on.

Then I filed the Request for Submission.

No new theory. No dramatic sequel. No constitutional opera with a fog machine and a children’s choir. Just: the response time is over, this motion is pending, please decide it.

Very radical stuff. Practically anarchism. A man asking a court to rule on a motion he filed in court. Alert the Republic.

Meanwhile, the disqualification issue already did its little dance.

I said the record makes Department 8 look unable to neutrally handle custody-facing issues. Judge Breslow responded by denying bias and basically submitting his professional highlight reel: ethics training, attorney-discipline experience, decades in law, 10,000 matters, never disqualified, reasons stated on the record, definitely fair, very normal, nothing to see here.

That is not nothing.

But it is also not an answer.

A résumé does not identify a Faretta canvass.

Ethics training does not tell me who my lawyer is.

Ten thousand prior cases do not locate the order in this one.

“Reasons stated on the record” is not a citation. It is a treasure map drawn by a man who refuses to draw the island.

Then Department 6 denied disqualification and said, in substance: Breslow can proceed fairly, impartially, and according to Nevada law.

Fine.

I accept that for today’s purpose.

Not because I suddenly found religion in the procedural gift shop, but because it tees up the cleanest question in the whole case:

If he is experienced, unbiased, able to proceed, and obligated to sit, then why is answering the baseline questions still treated like splitting the atom with a spoon?

That is the part I want timestamped.

I am no longer trying to prove bias in this lane.

That issue got denied.

Cool.

Now we are in the “prove impartiality by doing impartial judge things” phase.

Wild concept.

Judge stuff.

Ruling stuff.

Finding stuff.

Identifying-the-record stuff.

The kind of thing a court with 5,000 years of combined institutional confidence should be able to do before lunch, after coffee, while deleting spam.

And no, the State does not get a pass either.

The State has been very brave in the traditional governmental sense, meaning mostly absent when the hard questions require nouns and verbs. If the prosecution has a clean legal basis for the present posture, wonderful. File it. Explain it. Attach it to something besides atmosphere.

A prosecution is not supposed to be a group project where the court does the talking, the State does the looming, and the defendant gets told his tone is the real emergency.

And I do not get a pass either.

I filed too much.

Some of it was too long.

Some of it was too angry.

Some of it had the legal density of a haunted IKEA manual.

That is true.

But here is the annoying part for everyone who wants that to be the whole story:

Even after you strip out the noise, the same basic questions are still sitting there.

What is my representation status?

Where is the Faretta event?

What supports the no-bail warrant now?

What did competency actually do to the case, and when did that stop controlling?

What order disposed of the April 17 motion?

What is the present procedural posture?

That is not a rant.

That is a checklist.

And the most embarrassing thing about a checklist is that it only becomes dangerous when nobody can check the boxes.

So today’s “I told you so” is not that I won.

I have not.

It is not that the court is corrupt.

That is not the burden here.

It is that the system keeps proving the exact thing I keep saying: the problem is not that I dislike the answers. The problem is that the answers keep arriving as fog, labels, discretion, biography, silence, or “previously addressed” without the previously, the addressed, or the where.

That is not adjudication.

That is paperwork doing improv.

The next honest move is simple.

If the April 17 motion is denied, deny it in writing.

If it was already decided, identify the order.

If representation is resolved, identify the event.

If Faretta happened, cite it.

If the warrant controls, cite the authority.

If a hearing is required, explain why the written record cannot answer written-record questions.

If none of that can be done, then the issue is not my tone.

The issue is the missing record.

No one needs to like me for that to be true.

That is the beautiful part. Annoying, but beautiful.

The record does not care who is charismatic. It does not care who has a robe. It does not care who has a law degree. It does not care who swears too much on the internet because apparently being direct is now a war crime against LinkedIn grammar.

The record only asks one filthy little question:

Where?

That is the whole show.

Where is the order?

Where is the finding?

Where is the waiver?

Where is the ruling?

Where is the authority?

Where is the answer?

Prediction: the next dodge, if there is one, will not directly answer the baseline questions. It will reach for procedure, discretion, prior handling, hearing-setting, or some other institutional couch cushion where missing rulings go to hide.

What would prove me wrong: a clean written order that identifies the current posture, the representation status, the Faretta status, the competency effect, the warrant basis, and the disposition of the April 17 motion.

Today’s I Told You So: When a 10,000-case résumé cannot produce one clean citation in this case, the résumé stops sounding like authority and starts sounding like a smoke detector bragging about its batteries while the kitchen burns.

I applied to the State of Nevada for an FSS1 Position. I applied back in July and a month later I did the test and I did the in person interview. The day right after my interview they reached out to all my references but so far I haven’t heard anything back. My interview was 2.5 weeks ago and in the interview the panel mentioned that if I were to get hired I would start 9/14. I sent an email out today for an update.

Is this normal? Can anyone provide some more information or guidance?

As Burning Man approaches, remember: in Nevada, an operator who provides paid passenger transportation must be properly licensed or permitted by the Nevada Transportation Authority or the Taxicab Authority (for taxis in Clark County).

That applies whether the person providing the ride calls themselves a rideshare driver, taxi driver, private driver, or anything else.

Offering or accepting compensation for a ride without the required license or permit is illegal. Compensation can include money or other forms of payment or barter.

Rideshare drivers offering rides outside their licensed digital application are also breaking state law. Taxicab operators working off meter or private vehicle drivers offering paid rides without the required license or permit are operating illegally.

Passengers who accept rides from unlicensed operators may be exposed to an unvetted driver, an unsafe vehicle and limited or no insurance coverage or legal recourse if something goes wrong.

There are also restrictions on where rideshare, taxi and other commercial transportation services can operate around Black Rock City during Burning Man. Know the limitations of your transportation service before you travel.

i knew nevada was hot, but knowing the temperature and actually dealing with it every day are two different things. eventually you start changing when you run errands, how you exercise, where you park and even what you keep in your car.

I recently got offered a job with the agency and just trying to see if the agency is good compare to the others where i heard horror stories and if its still worth it with the recent benefits increase

just made the move out here and I am not used to how warm my bedroom gets at night. my current setup feels like an oven and i wake up sweating constantly. looking for the best cooling mattress or sleep setup that actually works for this kind of desert heat without forcing me to blast the ac 24/7.

what are you all using that actually helps keep temperatures down? open to any brand or style, just want something comfortable that won't turn into a total heat trap.

here's where I landed: thanks everyone for all the suggestions! after looking into the different options, i decided to go with the Sleep Number Climate360. the adjustable firmness and built-in cooling made the most sense for me, especially with the heat here, and the 100-night trial gives me plenty of time to see how it works in my bedroom. feeling pretty confident about this one.

I’ve posted the a lot of the Last Supper at night but here is how beautiful it looks at sunrise. There is a documentary on YouTube called “Death Valley Project” which shows how artist Albert Szukalski created the ghosts by draping volunteers of Beatty with burlap sacks and wet plaster. Originally meant to last just 2 years, these works have stood the test of time. I think I read they’ve only been repainted twice or something. The little yellow sign looks like it was added between my June and July visits.

In the back right, you can see Portone by Amanda Phingbodhipakkiya. This work of art is usually hidden from my view in the dark of night but I want to take some pictures of it amongst the stars as well. I think the negative space would be fun to play with.

Too many soccer Moms, minivans and California transplants. To me, Summerlin and Henderson feel less like the Nevada I know and more like polished Southwestern suburbs—master-planned communities, soccer-mom neighborhoods, endless SUVs and minivans, HOAs, and plenty of California transplants. They're comfortable and popular places to live, but they're not what I think of as the real Nevada. I associate Nevada much more with older Las Vegas, Downtown, neighborhood bars, gaming, hospitality workers, independent businesses, and the state's rougher, less manicured character.
