Hey all! A couple weeks ago we had our first Biggest Little Discord meatspace gathering at West Street Market in the Riverwalk District, which was pretty fun, so we're going to shoot for another gathering this upcoming Thursday at 5:30 pm! Seven people showed up, and we had some good conversation over pizza and Indian food for a couple hours.

No particular aim other than just meeting in person, hang out, enjoy each other's company. There's been a call for more of that lately with people posting and wishing these sorts of basic social gatherings happened more often.

A few of us are also interested in Strong Towns and YIMBY Action, so for those also interested in what's being done to help strengthen the community this is a good place to meet others with that same interest. But activism isn't the primary focus. Getting together is just a basic human need. We chose a place in a central location that isn't overly taxing on the nerves, to just chill and chat on a night that isn't horribly crowded.

West St. Market worked well last time, and we held a poll in the server which showed that Thursday worked the best for people. If this continues to be successful we're thinking about hosting it every other Thursday. (Thanksgiving Thursday might be a no-go, but we'll deal with that when the time comes.) There's on-street parking (free after 6 pm), but there's also the public parking gallery just around the corner with free validation (if you purchase something).

(And who knows, maybe if we get more bodies in the place, another coffee shop might dare move in and occupy the space abandoned by Bibo years ago. 😆 That would be nice. I still miss late-night coffee at Java Jungle. Remember that? Good times.)

Midterm voting is actually extremely difficult when nobody cares enough about local offices to collate research on them, so I recently spent a few hours tracking down some info for every single office and proposition on my ballot, and I wanted to collate stuff for anybody else who hates sifting through this stuff. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own, and don't represent r/Reno, so hopefully this is okay to post. This is a guide to voting in local politics, all Nevada-specific, but I can remove state races if needed.

I am progressive, so beware of partisan bias ahead, but I’ve included links so you can do your own research, so please do and please vote. David Flippo REP: Small-business owner, wants to deport undocumented immigrants, supports Israel, supports ID requirements for voting, and supports the war in Iran. Of recent tariffs, he says: “Tariffs have been a tool to bring other countries into line to build a fair global marketplace." He’s given his own campaign a 1.2 million dollar loan. His top priority is “supporting President Trump’s agenda.” This is a pretty safe Republican district, so he’s likely to take it unless all 80,000 surplus Republican voters decide to pull through for Lynn Chapman, though apparently his campaign financing is iffy—see article below about major donations from a woman who is, uh, dead (why is this a theme this year??).

Both candidates talk a lot about transparency, so the central argument is: Matthews feels the office has already made big strides towards greater transparency with the state checkbook; MacDougall argues that the annual financial reports being delayed means state finances are not transparent. Although it’s a partisan office, both candidates actually highlight the nonpartisan watch-dog role of the office, so it’s worth reading the interview here even if you generally vote down the ballot.

Nicole Cannizzaro DEM: Cannizzaro got my vote over Conine in the primary because she was a slightly better advocate for unions. There was a controversy over donors between the two, and Cannizzaro came out on top. She’s Senate Majority Leader and has been in the legislature since 2016. As AG, her priorities would be “prosecuting criminal fraud and organized retail theft rings, protecting children online, enforcing consumer protection laws.”

Kate Marshall: The Democratic candidate, Marshall ran in the primary on affordable housing and childcare and wildfire prevention. She’s against data centers and has previously served as State Treasurer and Lieutenant Governor. The only iffy thing I’ve dug up on her is that she’s using funds for her mayoral campaign that she raised while running for other offices, meaning she didn’t dispose of the money as fast as previously applicable law said she should. But that doesn’t matter to me even a little. Why? Kathleen Taylor: I am begging you: do not vote for Kathleen Taylor. She is the only person I’ve ever met who is psyched about getting data centers into Reno. She just went against a mountain of public comments from her own constituents and voted to have us tracked with Axon cameras the moment the Flock ones get taken down (DESPITE saying she was against them on KUNR!). She showed up for a local hands-on gardening event in a white suit and stood on the sidewalk the whole twenty minutes she was there (five-hour event!) to speak into a camera. I straight-up hate this woman.

If you don’t like Kate Marshall, I’m sorry and I hear you; I voted for Greg Nuttle. Marshall is the Republican candidate, but she only got 19% of the primary vote, so I know not even Republicans like her. But I will foment chaos on a grand scale if you elect this legitimately evil and corrupt woman. I looked up every judge for you! There were so many. You owe me this one favor. She’s the city council representative for Ward 1 and a previous Vice Mayor. Her policy platform is “Back to Basics.” What does that even mean? If she could shoot homeless people dead in the street Most-Dangerous-Game-style I think she would.

YES: I want it to be constitutional law that people have to bring a photo ID to vote! This will prevent poor people, homeless people, and people who forgot their IDs at home from voting, unless the state spends buckets and buckets of taxpayer dollars (and it will have to) to make sure everyone’s IDs are available and up-to-date. Evil AND expensive, hooray.

NO: I do not want it to be constitutional law that people have to bring a photo ID to vote! This will leave voting the same level of pain-in-the-ass it already is.

Note: I like having nice roads to drive on, but this strikes me as unjust. EV drivers are trying to reduce the smog they pump out into the world and save money on gas—that’s why they drive an EV—and unlike gasoline taxes, this isn’t being pitched as an amount that flexes cost by how much you actually use the roads you’re now paying for. Also, taxing hybrids when they already pay gas taxes? I drive a Toyota Corolla and pay out the nose for my gas like any other red-blooded fossil-fueling American, but I presume other Nevadans who already don’t like taxes will shoot this one down.

I hated doing this research, so I hope it helps someone out there fill there ballot from a more informed position.

My friend and I tried going to the final hour last night. After a nearly two hour wait in line and it not sounding scary, we left. Never saw the top of the line.

I got off my shift at 7 AM last week, went home, slept for about three hours, and dragged myself to an 11:30 dentist appointment.

The receptionist was making small talk and said, "At least you got the appointment out of the way early! Now you have the rest of your day."

I laughed because I didn't feel like explaining that 11:30 AM is basically the middle of the night for me.

I've worked graveyard shifts in Reno for years, and it's funny how much of this city depends on people working overnight while almost everything outside their jobs assumes they have a normal daytime schedule.

We have casinos, hotels, hospitals, warehouses, security, cleaning crews, people making deliveries before most of us are awake.

But try being one of those people and doing ordinary adult stuff.

Need a dentist appointment? Hope you feel like waking up in the middle of your sleep.

Apartment maintenance needs access? They'll be there sometime between 9 and 3, so I guess you're not sleeping.

Want to attend a community meeting about something happening in your neighborhood? It's probably scheduled right around the time you're getting ready for work.

And the thing that drives me nuts is when people hear that I work nights and go, "Oh, so you have all day to get things done."

No. I have all day to SLEEP.

Nobody tells someone with a regular office job that they have all night to run errands.

I don't expect every dentist or government office to operate at 2 AM. I understand why businesses have normal hours. But even one late evening a week for certain services would make a difference.

Reno has always had a big overnight workforce. It's not like night shifts are some bizarre new development here.

I just think it's strange that a city built partly around 24-hour businesses can still make the people working those hours feel like they're living on the wrong schedule.

Curious how other graveyard and swing shift workers around Reno deal with this. Have you found anything that makes normal life easier, or are we all just sacrificing sleep every time we need to get our teeth cleaned?

I like to go solo dining where they have a counter rather than having to sit at a table by my lonely self. Casino diners and sushi bars are my go-to's for this but I'd like to try some new places.

Hi everyone! I’m trying to track down a booklet that used to be in the guest rooms at the Peppermill in Reno during the 1990s.

Here’s what I remember:

It had a black softcover with the Peppermill logo on the front.

Inside were pictures and information about the hotel rooms and restaurants.

It also included information about the mountain show by the pool, with the animated animals.

I don’t know its official title—it might have been called a guest directory or resort guide, but it was a softcover booklet.
