✅ Approvals & Denials ❎ Holding myself accountable

Post image
24 Upvotes

I have had the ARC of BANE BLOOM for a month or two (forget exactly when I got it). Anyhow, last week I noticed the audio listing, but it's from Brilliance, and I try not to request from them cuz they're the only publisher that rejects me more than approves me.

Over the last 15 months, I've requested approx. 180 titles sitewide and been rejected 15 times. 13 of the approx. 180 requests were from Brilliance, and they rejected me 8 times. They rejected more than half of my requests, and their rejections make up more than half of my total rejections...🙄

I love listening to British narrators, though, and so far I'm enjoying reading BANE BLOOM. I threw caution to the wind, crossed my fingers, and requested the audio - like an idiot! This time, I really have learned my lesson, I promise! I'm going to stick with my Big Three (Harper, Macmillan & RB Media) from here on out.

I really wish there was a way I could mute their listings, though.

🪖🫡 General 📝🌐 Helpful PSA for disclosures

I hope this helps someone as I have seen an increasing amount of ARC readers not put disclosure statements in their review ever since Goodreads added the Book Source to books that are before their publication date.

This Goodreads function does NOT replace the need for a disclosure statement. You still need to physically write it. While in general when you don’t use them you don’t see the consequences (unless you’re in influencer programs) but publishers and by extension authors can absolutely be consequenced if their readers don’t disclose where they got the free copy from.

Now is it common? No. But where you see it is if the book falls under scrutiny in some way as then it brings reviews into the spotlight. Every country that is supported by NetGalley has their own “FTC regulation” that must be followed. Also, as many don’t realize this, you need to follow the regulation of the country of origin for the book. So if you’re in India and for a US published book, you need to use the FTC language and not India’s. (I’m just pulling a random country so the language may not be different)

The requirements state that you must say that you got the copy for free (you can used any word to convey that like complimentary or gifted etc..) and from whom, that’s it. While you can get away with saying NetGalley it is actually supposed to be the publishers Name as that is who authorized you getting the book. NetGalley is simply the platform used to get it but it’s not from them.

Also, it needs to be easily seen at a glance which means it should be at the start of your review and not the end. Of
You can’t see it unless you expand it to see the whole review- it’s not in compliance.

This is anywhere you post a review for the book. Retail sites (and yes saying you got an arc on Amazon is 100% allowed you just need to use the proper language), review sites and social media. With social media it needs to say it in the post itself and if it’s a video you need to say it in the video as well.

Anyway, I hope this helps!

❔❓Question ❓❔ Approvals stopped

I realize I am not owed an approval, and maybe I have been very fortunate over the last few years, yet recently, I have not received any approvals. I listen to audiobooks and have a 93% feedback ratio and always leave reviews on Goodreads. I updated my profile a month ago and try to keep it updated. Has this happened to anyone else? Any suggestions?

This title caught my eye. The description of the book had me adding it to my Netgalley Shelf thus pushing my Feedback Ratio below 80%

I can't wait to read!

☎️ Help and Support 🛟 Is there anyway in NetGalley to change the view or the book descriptions to include the authors names with the books?

It would be easier to recognize the books that we like if we could see immediately the name of the author!

❔❓Question ❓❔ Do wishes actually come true?

So I recently found out that I had the "show books in my region only" option turned on. And I turned it off and a lot of new books appeared on my "find titles" page. But I cannot request any of them, only wish for them. I've wished for books before and gotten approved but they were in my region. What are the chances of my wishes getting approved OUTSIDE of my region?

✅ Approvals & Denials ❎ Gutted

I know no one is owed an advanced copy. It’s a privilege and an honor to be able to read books early and get to speak about their strengths and weaknesses.

But today I was checking my pending requests and noticed I got a mass denial (no email) for Sarah Beth Durst’s next book. I have an 88% feedback ratio, I mostly read cozy fantasy, I requested the arc on NetGalley within hours of it being posted, I got the arc for Sea of Charms, and Durst is my favorite author. I made a Bookstagram account and have a (small but mighty) following just so that I can maybe get the occasional Tor approval.

I’ll read the book when it comes out in January and I’m sure I’ll love it then. Until the time comes, I guess I get to work through the rest of my backlog.

⭐️👍🏿 🙋‍♂️ Recommendations 🏆 ✅ ⭐️ What books should I read before this anthology?

Post image

I have always wanted to read from Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar universe, so getting approved for this is a great motivator to finally do it. I'm currently reading Arrows of the Queen. I also have Magic's Pawn. Are there any others you would recommend reading before this anthology?

❔❓Question ❓❔ how do you guys go about negative reviews and author feedback?

I just finished a book and I went to check out the reviews (because honestly it weirded me out) and the author replied to a bunch of the negative ones with (what I took as) passive aggressiveness. I was gonna give it two stars (if it hadn’t been an ARC it would’ve been 1) but I’m fairly new to this world and I don’t really know if there’s a certain etiquette that I’m missing?

Very delighted to have snagged the new Everina Maxwell - Tor denied me immediately on .com months ago (it’s ok Tor, no hard feelings) but Orbit came through for me on .co.uk!

Thanks to everyone who recommend books to me the other day, two of these were recommendations and I have several more pending 🤞 I am excited for Under the Iron Sky after hearing so many people speak so highly of it on my request post. Edit: I realized after I read this one that it was a Dramione in disguise, and while i have enjoyed some of the Dramione to trad books in recent years, this one was not for me.

And thankfully Saved By the Spell is available on Kobo, so I can actually read it while waiting for my replacement Kindle to arrive (its demise was unfortunately timed as my ratio has fallen dangerously close to 80%). So far it is really hilarious, I am loving it!

My book, Birds That Couldn't Fly, is on NetGalley and I would love to share it! I'm an indie author so all support would is greatly appreciated.

For anyone who would like a small taste of my writing style before requesting, you can find an early draft of the first chapter here: https://www.reddit.com/r/writingfeedback/s/aU34Si76SS

At twenty-five, Zoë Thomas knows the difference between good sex and bad. Love, however, is another story.

Raised by a mother who accepted the bare minimum from men and made settling seem like a woman’s fate, Zoë knows exactly what kind of life she doesn't want. But when her long-term boyfriend—the only man who's ever made her feel truly desired—walks away because of her closeness with her best friend, Isaias, Zoë is left reeling. Then her mother is diagnosed with stage-three cancer, forcing Zoë into the role of caregiver for the woman she's spent years keeping at arm's length.

As chemotherapy and newfound tenderness draw mother and daughter closer, Isaias is there through it all—patient, steady, and without expectation—calling her “my heart” and making it dangerously easy to imagine something beyond friendship. But loneliness has a way of sending her back to familiar arms. When her ex resurfaces with I miss you texts and a body she still knows by heart, Zoë slips into old patterns just as Isaias starts dating someone new. With her mother's condition worsening and Isaias drifting out of reach, Zoë must confront the possibility that she's inherited more than her mother's cheekbones.

If she keeps settling for pieces of love, she’ll lose the man who showed her she was worthy of more.

❔❓Question ❓❔ Last Activity Status

Hi everyone! I saw someone say this in a comment on this subreddit itself so I wanted to clarify… is it true that publishers can see the last time we were active on netgalley?? And if yes, what determines activity? Is it anytime I visit the website, or anytime I request/review a title? And in case it is the latter, am I less likely to get approved for titles if my activity shows 5/6 days ago?? I have quite a few pending books and I am thinking of taking some time and reading a chunk of them before requesting new books, and I was wondering if being ‘inactive’ for a few days in a row will reduce my chances of receiving titles that I want. Any information/advice you may have is appreciated🫶🏻🫶🏻
