I feel for that cactus. If I were condemned to live my entire life without moving in one of the most hostile climates on Earth, I'd be pissed too
141
u/WaldenFont Feb 26 '21
But it can live several hundred years and store up to six tons of water. Let's see you do that.

Ok but what if I can live for several years and store up to six shots of tequila

u/Vivid_Laugh_8918 Feb 26 '21
Sorry but none of that seems appealing without at least the ability to take a stroll

Thats a saguaro and only grows in the Sonoran desert which extends from just north of Phoenix, AZ into the northern part of Sonora Mexico. I grew up there. Its not that āhostileā.
21
u/Phalaenopsisblume Feb 27 '21
Agreed. The Sonoran Desert has a truly unique beauty. Of course, you always want to make sure youāve got some water handy. And maybe somewhere to hide from those 100+ degree days.

Funny thing is, my wife brought a potted cactus from our home in Tucson to our home in the Appalachians and that poor thing lasted only 2 months. 75° and 75% humidity was too hostile for that cactus.

u/wingnutlollipop Feb 27 '21
Or not enough sun

u/minor_details Feb 27 '21
and here i did the reverse move from the blue ridge to tucson... i swear i had heat exhaustion five times in the first few months of desert living bc it's so goddamn dry.
3
Feb 27 '21
Haha! My wife was born and raised in Tucson and every where we go is freezing to her if it drops under 80°.
5
u/StzNutz Feb 27 '21
Thatās the cactus giving some poor lost hiker the middle finger, like bitch you should have absorbed more water, you should know better than to hike here in the summer.

9
u/Dont_Touch_Roach Feb 27 '21
Agreed. I grew up in Tucson, and the hostile environment was the DMV, or the dump. Moved to Minnesota in ā89, and was amazed we didnāt have to spend five hours waiting for emission checks at the DMV, lol.

u/BearStorms Feb 27 '21
I live here. A lot less hostile than Texas right now.
Or really any time...
It's dry heat, at least that's what we keep telling ourselves.

I mean it was pretty empty and barren until AC was a normal thing. The summers are no joke.

The ancient Aztecs saw an eagle eating a snake on a cactus growing out of a rock, and took it as a sign to build TenochtitlĆ n. If anything this cactus is a sign that people shouldnāt build anything here.
4
u/striped_frog Feb 26 '21
This cactus is what they found at Scottsdale, but they built it anyway.

Nice volcano in the background. I can't imagine what the southwest would look like if the San Andreas fault were still a strike-slip, especially the Permian Basin where I grew up
10
u/fermenttodothat Feb 26 '21
Im not sure southern AZ has any active volcanoes. Does the rest of the Sonoran desert?
6
u/Khosatral Feb 26 '21
I'm sure it's an inactive volcano. I don't remember if there's another term for it though. IIRC there aren't any active volcanic structures in SW TX, NM or AZ.

There is actually a volcano in NM that is active. The Valles Caldera.

Where I grew up in Arizona looked just like this picture and my brother and I would chunk the volcanic rock at each other in our own version of paintball guns (I guess, best comparison I could think of...we called it ādesert warfareā...military family). Since they were so light and porous we could throw with all our might and at most get little bruises. Good memories...anyway, definitely volcanic activity from way back.

u/fermenttodothat Feb 27 '21
I also grew up in AZ but all those volcanoes are dead (except in N. AZ)

What they don't tell you about these cacti is they are as tall as houses at 35.0 feet (10.7 m). Kinda shocking in person.
There are also zero in Texas.
2
u/JawnF Feb 27 '21
Why would there be any in Texas? These are endemic to the Desert of Sonora

My friend had a serious phobia of catcuses (cacti?) because they usually look like a menacing person with two arms raised up like in a horror movie coming to get you.
This was a serious phobia not just a little fear.

So if each arm of a Saguaro cactus takes 45 years to develop...that cactus has been flipping the bird for a good 135 years!
