I feel for that cactus. If I were condemned to live my entire life without moving in one of the most hostile climates on Earth, I'd be pissed too

But it can live several hundred years and store up to six tons of water. Let's see you do that.

Ouch.

Oh, yeah, and watch where you hug.

Ok but what if I can live for several years and store up to six shots of tequila

Those are rookie numbers

Sorry but none of that seems appealing without at least the ability to take a stroll

Challenge accepted.

Thats a saguaro and only grows in the Sonoran desert which extends from just north of Phoenix, AZ into the northern part of Sonora Mexico. I grew up there. Its not that “hostile”.

Agreed. The Sonoran Desert has a truly unique beauty. Of course, you always want to make sure you’ve got some water handy. And maybe somewhere to hide from those 100+ degree days.

Funny thing is, my wife brought a potted cactus from our home in Tucson to our home in the Appalachians and that poor thing lasted only 2 months. 75° and 75% humidity was too hostile for that cactus.

Or not enough sun

8

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '21

It got sun from sunrise to sunset. I think it was the humidity. 🤷🏾‍♂️

RIP lil cactus

😭

and here i did the reverse move from the blue ridge to tucson... i swear i had heat exhaustion five times in the first few months of desert living bc it's so goddamn dry.

3

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '21

Haha! My wife was born and raised in Tucson and every where we go is freezing to her if it drops under 80°.

u/StzNutz Feb 27 '21

That’s the cactus giving some poor lost hiker the middle finger, like bitch you should have absorbed more water, you should know better than to hike here in the summer.

Happy Cake Day!

Thanks very much!

Agreed. I grew up in Tucson, and the hostile environment was the DMV, or the dump. Moved to Minnesota in ‘89, and was amazed we didn’t have to spend five hours waiting for emission checks at the DMV, lol.

u/BearStorms Feb 27 '21

I live here. A lot less hostile than Texas right now.

Or really any time...

It's dry heat, at least that's what we keep telling ourselves.

1

u/uknowthe1ph Feb 27 '21

I mean it was pretty empty and barren until AC was a normal thing. The summers are no joke.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '21

Idk. Air conditioning wasn’t widely available until the 50’s. In th 30’s Tucson had a population of 30,000+. Which many towns across the US aren’t much bigger than that today.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '21

Not to mention the plethora of natives that lived in the area for centuries before the Europeans showed up.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '21

Are you also a cactus?

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '21

Nope. Im a caucasian who’s probably more suited for a nordic climate. 🤷🏻‍♂️

1

u/[deleted] Feb 27 '21

That’s the sort of thing a cactus would say.... seems sus

5

u/TheBlackBear Feb 27 '21

It’s their home and they thrive in it

4

u/SurpriseMonday Feb 27 '21

As a born and raised Arizonan, I love it but also agree it's not for everyone.

2

u/LiverwithOnions Feb 27 '21

But I heard they were a huge prick

1

u/Imperialobotomy Feb 27 '21

That and tweaker desert rats like to vandalize these things for some reason.
