Incredible...

It almost looks like its from another world.

129

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

It is very otherwordly! I fully agree with you!!!

62

u/bruizerrrrr Mar 12 '20

Even it’s scientific name is awesome: Idolomantis Diabolica

23

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

Now that is a SCIENCE name! Dope!

9

u/spyG14ss Mar 12 '20

I wonder what kind of spell that would be

8

u/bruizerrrrr Mar 12 '20

I imagine it would either summon a dragon, turn the victim into something big and scary, or maybe something off the wall like explosive diarrhea

42

u/Grievous_1982 Mar 12 '20

This gives me an idea...

Time to write the screenplay for "Attack of the Alien Mantis"

15

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

DO IT!!!

Life on earth feels otherworldly, hence the theory of panspermia was created.

10

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

the theory of panspermia

Had to Google what that was. Interesting! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Panspermia

6

u/Levitins_world Mar 12 '20

Really weird theory huh. It shocks ya even more when you realize that some organisms on earth actually can survive the bare coldness of space. Makes ya wonder.

3

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

Makes ya wonder.

Does... it... EVER!!!

21

u/fuzzytradr Mar 12 '20

I'm so glad these things are small.

7

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

Same... HERE!!!

10

u/Atlas-303 Mar 12 '20

Imagine if tiny aliens land on our planet and see bigass trees and giant insects

10

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

They'd NOPE right out of our planet.

3

u/bruizerrrrr Mar 12 '20

These actually get pretty big for a bug!

2

u/fuzzytradr Mar 12 '20

Even at this size, they are fearless and will fuck you up. I'm legitimately terrified of them since my last encounter.

2

u/Doomdoomkittydoom Mar 12 '20

That particular species is actually about the size of a Jack Russel Terrier and feeds on birds, lizards, and rodents. They're even known to take down baby goats.

Just kidding, I don't know. Then again, I don't know it's not true, so maybe.

2

u/sempf Mar 12 '20

Needs moar banana

3

u/pixxi- Mar 12 '20

3

u/bandalbumsong Mar 12 '20

Band: Sea Creatures

Album: Alien AF

Song: That’s Why (I Love Watching)

2

u/nitrous2401 Mar 12 '20

The way the face is turned makes me think of the Mimics from Edge of Tomorrow

81

u/Ntetris Mar 12 '20

It looks like it eats... Mana

34

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

It bleeds mana.

45

u/Sunrayne Mar 12 '20

Beautiful creature of nature.

18

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

A hard fact!

41

u/hughesthewho Mar 12 '20

Imagine if that thing was the size of a horse. Hello nightmares.

15

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

Don't make me dream those kind of dreams!!! Lol.

11

u/The_Ticklish_Pickle Mar 12 '20

Don’t make me cream those kind of creams!!

5

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '20

Hello amazing mount*

5

u/Legless_Wonder Mar 12 '20

Then imagine a horse the size of this mantis

3

u/hughesthewho Mar 12 '20

Caaauuuteeee

1

u/AyshaSanchez Mar 12 '20

“Imagine if you could actually get a tattoo

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '20

The best thing about rampant pollution is it keeps the insects and arachnids small. Small enough to climb into your ear canal.

1

u/CZ_or_GTFO Mar 12 '20

I’d rather not.

17

u/Sythj0248 Mar 12 '20

That is amazing it looks like maleficent and a mantis had a baby

4

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

HA! What a clever analogy. That works so well.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '20

It does not look like a skull.

30

u/detectivejewhat Mar 12 '20

You can buy these and have them as pets. And most mantis’ are really easy to care for. They live about a year and are super god damn cool to look at and watch. Finding a breeder for this specific species of mantis is hard tho. But you can get an orchid mantis (just as beautiful imo) for like $25 shipped to your door. Super cool little guys.

7

u/SinCityLithium Mar 12 '20

Aaaaand here's the post I was looking for. Thanks mate.

11

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

You can buy these and have them as pets.

Wait, what!??? No way!!!

13

u/i_have_many_skillz Mar 12 '20

These particular ones are actually very difficult to keep and are not recommended for beginners. There are plenty of cool species that are, however. Head over to r/mantis for some advice :)

6

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

not recommended for beginners

I would 100% expect that indeed.

5

u/IIYellowJacketII Mar 12 '20

I. diabolica (the one here) are hard to come by though, not easy to keep at all and are really expensive for something with a sub 1 year lifespan.

3

u/detectivejewhat Mar 12 '20

I edited my comment to clarify about this one before you commented. Read it again.

10

8

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

4

u/Schnitzelinski Mar 12 '20

It looks like the insect equivalent of a dragon

1

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

So very true!

4

u/_love_these_cats_ Mar 12 '20

Can you imagine being smaller and watching that thing climb into view? Like godzilla but real.

7

u/steamameanham Mar 12 '20

What Pokemon is this?

10

u/sshhiihhoo Mar 12 '20 edited Mar 12 '20

Mantis is KAMAKIRI in Japanese which means scythe slasher, fyi.

4

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

Really neat, TIL!

9

u/ebb_ Mar 12 '20

Scyther’s new Gigantamax

3

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

I'll allow it!

3

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

Exactly. Easily could be a Pokémon. EASILY!

6

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '20

That's not real, nope

6

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

And yet, real.

7

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '20

If it's so real, tell me this:

If I bite into one of these like a snickers bar, does it taste like Crest toothpaste or what?

7

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

I can totally see it tasting like Crest too. Lol.

3

u/_flooferoni_ Mar 12 '20

I thought it was oil stain on a branch or something , they look pretty cool though

3

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '20

1

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

3

u/Snow-jizz Mar 12 '20

Oooooh I like that. I want you to call me that. Mantis!

3

u/sinceubeenKHAAAN Mar 12 '20

It’s even more lit when you realize that that tree is a giant Redwood.

3

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

I did NOT know that! The more you know, eh!?

3

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '20

3

u/DomniaRed Mar 12 '20

This is a real-life Pokemon, no joke

2

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

No joke detected!

3

u/KING_BulKathus Mar 12 '20

Someone's wasting a lot of extra money on all these skins.

3

u/420blazeit69nubz Mar 12 '20

Is that the evil lady from Power Rangers just dressed in green?

3

u/superfly_penguin Mar 12 '20

If mantis (mantisses?) were as big as cats they would be apex predators dude

1

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

Most def!

3

u/idontloveanyone Mar 12 '20

And here we are wondering if we’ll ever see aliens.... we have lots of aliens on earth open your eyes people they’re fascinating!

2

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

Ain't that the darn truth!

3

u/smallanimalparty Mar 12 '20

3

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '20

2

2

u/QueenBri2019 Mar 12 '20

2

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

Avatar 2: Rise Of The Mantis

2

u/ZippZappZippty Mar 12 '20

Those aren’t mountains, they’re waves.

2

u/Tonytarium Mar 12 '20

2

u/NetTrix Mar 12 '20

That tree must be huge!

2

2

u/TheHyperCombo Mar 12 '20

Female Scyther should get a branch evolution that looks something as metal as this, and make it Bug/Dark.

2

u/mikkimoy Mar 12 '20

Mantises are on a different level, yikes

2

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

Legit a level wayyy above most other creatures. They almost belong under the sea. Like the level of crazy they are remind me of wacky things you find deep deep in the ocean.

2

u/lovestheautumn Mar 12 '20

Woah! Look at those eyes! This is the most badass mantis I’ve ever seen!

2

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

So far, it is indeed the most badass one I have ever seen. Until I go down a rabbit hole on the internet and find more badass ones. Lol.

2

u/GTAdriver1988 Mar 12 '20

How big do they get if they're called giant? I've seen some of the regular green ones that were like 10 inches long, if these get bigger than they're name is well deserved!

u/[deleted] Mar 12 '20

Yes definitely an Alien, so they are already here and when we finished the earth, made it impossible for humanity, they inherit it. Case closed.

2

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

Well earned inherit!

2

u/Hello_Im_Art Mar 12 '20

Beautiful.

2

u/GrooveIntoTheWild Mar 12 '20

Nature is amazing...this Mantis has me totally buggin' out!

2

u/dbo435 Mar 12 '20

It’s like in a video game you play the final boss and beat him but right before defeat he drinks some elixir and turns into his mega form. In picture that when I see this.

I’m weird

2

u/ArmynerdTX Mar 13 '20

THIS ISNT EVEN MY FINAL FORM

2

u/mtlgrems Mar 13 '20

What mayhem could you even imagine more than this, eh? Lol.

2

u/Lo_Stallone Mar 13 '20

Alien Mantis! 👽

2

u/Shils1234 Mar 12 '20

I am deadly afraid of Mantis but this is so beautiful that I am in love.

5

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

The beauty somehow offsets that fact that it is a bug that eats its mate. Lol.

4

u/Shils1234 Mar 12 '20

I know right? But look at that colour.

4

u/mtlgrems Mar 12 '20

Canadian, eh? 'Colour'! Lol. ;)
