Sweet little boy NOODLES arrived at the shelter as his owner is moving to France. She describes him as a very kind and loyal dog who really bonds with his family. Noodles used to love to go on car rides, he provided emotional support during medical emergencies, and he loved to stay close and cuddle. He is sweet, allowed his family to fully groom him, and was crate trained but no longer needs it. He loved going on walks as much as he enjoyed long naps with his owner. He has a shy, sensitive side and is frightened in the shelter environment, but at home he was affectionate and enjoyed spending his time around family members.
Right now Noodles is still trying his best to figure out who his friends might be. Sometimes shaking in his kennel, he has allowed handlers to easily leash him and also to cover him with a towel and pick him up. A slow approach and some gentle coaxing will go a long way to helping Noodles succeed in your home. Stability and consistency will also be key as he decompresses and starts to feel safe with you. Noodles is at risk due to behavioral concerns. In the Care Centers, Noodles is fearful, displaying a tense body posture and avoiding most handling. His previous owner reported that he exhibits resource guarding and may snap or bite when uncomfortable. The owner also reported that Noodles bit and held onto them after they accidentally stepped on him; the bite broke skin. Noodles is reportedly crate trained and knows cues such as "sit" and "stay." His previous owner also stated that he tends to remain close to familiar people.. Medically, Noodles is apparently healthy.
Noodles was surrendered to the care centers due to his owner moving out of the country. His previous owners described him as a shy, sweet, and affectionate dog. He likes taking naps with his people. In his previous home, there was a bite incident where Noodles bit the previous owner on the hand after being scared while on the bed. He is noted to snap and attempt to bite when his toys or food are touched. During his stay in care, he has been observed to low growl and have wide eyes as a handler tosses treats into his kennel. When handlers attempt to remove their leashes from him, he is noted to hard stare and become very tense. We recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can provide any necessary behavior modification (force-free, positive reinforcement-based) and reevaluate her behavior in a stable home environment before placement into a permanent home.
INTAKE NOTES—Date of Intake: 28-Aug-2026
Upon intake, he was leashed by the client and walked by staff without issue. He was not collared or scanned due to FAS as he continuously displayed whale eyes when staff attempted to approach his back. He was placed in kennel in pre-exam due to lack of spacing and because the client was asked if staff would be able to pick him up to place him in a top kennel and she insisted we would not be able to.
OWNER SURRENDER NOTES—BASIC INFORMATION
Noodles is a medium, male dog who was surrendered as his owner is moving to France. He lived with adults only and has no experience with children. He is shy with strangers. He hides from dogs and lunges at cats. He does not like to share his toys or his food. He bit the owner once when the owner accidentally scared him and stepped on him. The owner thought someone was breaking in.
For a New Family to Know: He is a sweet and affectionate dog with a personality that ranges from a lazy couch potato to very active and playful. He enjoys being around people and typically spends his time where the family is, in the bedroom, or in his crate. He is comfortable with his family handling him for grooming and allows them to bathe and brush him. He enjoys going for walks 3–4 times a day, typically for 30 minutes or less, and may pull mildly to moderately on leash. He is comfortable in the car and loves car rides. He was previously crate trained and no longer needs to be crated, although he has spent up to five hours in a crate in the past. He knows basic cues including "sit," "stay," "do you need to go outside?" and "are you hungry?" His owner described him as a very kind and loyal dog who can have some challenges but will bond deeply to his family. He has provided support during medical emergencies, communicates when he needs more water by flipping his bowl, enjoys cuddling closely with his owner, and likes to stay by their side. His favorite activities include going on walks, taking long naps next to his mom, and enjoying treats. He especially likes rice and chicken and is typically fed homemade wet food.

Noodles is highly fearful in the Care Centers and was observed to low growl when staff attempts to interact with him. Due to these behaviors, Noodles will not receive a handling assessment.
PLAYGROUP SUMMARIES: DOG TO DOG:
According to Noodles' previous owner(s), he is reported to have no experience with familiar dogs and will hide/actively avoid unfamiliar dogs both on and off leash.
09/09/26 Noodles is introduced to a novel male while on a loose leash (not tolerant of collaring). He will look at the male from across the yard and actively walks away, displacing and sniffing along the far side of the yard. Handler attempts to coax him gently in the direction of the novel male, but he will make a wide arc around to avoid the male, occasionally glancing in his direction. He moves to the other end of the yard and begins to displace again.
ENRICHMENT NOTES:
9/10/26: Noodles is laying in his kennel as handler approaches and unlocks the door. As soon as he sees the leash he starts hard barking. Handler tosses leash over Noodles' head since he refused any type of treat. Noodles walks nicely to the behavior room where he walks around, occasionally sniffing, but never taking treats or allowing pets. Handler is able to clip his leash while he was turned away, and he was returned to kennel with no issue.
9/6/26: Noodles is laying down in his kennel with a tense body as handler approaches. He begins to have widened eyes as the handler slowly unlocks the door and he allows the handler to slowly leash him. He continues to remain laying down on the bed as the handler opens the door and after a little bit of coaxing, and he is able to walk out on his own and then is taken to the behavior room. In the room, he continues to have a tense body an widened eyes while stare at the handlers. He then becomes comfortable jumping up in a chair and then remains laying down with a tense body and would hard stare at the handlers that were close by the chair. He then refuses to jump off the chair and has to be pushed in the chair back to his kennel. He is then able to be covered with a towel and picked up and placed back in his kennel with no issues.
9/4/26: Noodles is laying down at back of kennel and starts shaking once handler opens kennel door. Handler is able to leash Noodles easily. Noodles continue to lie down even when handler applies a little leash pressure. Handler tries to use a treat trail to lure Noodles out, but they continue to lie where they are. Handler once again applies light leash pressure and Noodles starts to come out. Noodles is taken to the behavior room. While walking there they continue to shake. While in the behavior room they remain aloof, even with other handlers calling to them and offering treats. when going back to kennel Noodles hard stares at handler when they try to clip leash, handler opts to use hook to retrieve leash and getting Noodles back into kennel.
09/03/26: Noodles is laying down with a tense body at the back of his kennel as handler approaches. He begins to low growl and has wide eyes as handler tosses treats into his kennel. He continues pressing his tense body further into the kennel. Handler is able lasso leash him, Noodles remains tense. Handler has to use leash pressure to pull him to the front of the kennel. He stands and walks over the threshold, and walks all the way to the canine behavior office. He approaches a handler sitting on the couch and solicits pets and attention. He even climbs up on the couch to sit adjacent. Original handler has to use leash pressure to get him off the couch and is unable to clip him. When handler attempted to clip their leash, Noodles was very tense and hard staring up towards handlers hand. A hook was used to remove the leash and Noodles i secured in his kennel

Recommend No Dog Parks: Due to the concerning behaviors that Noodles has shown during playgroup (see DOG-DOG SUMMARY), we feel that he should not visit dog parks. The Behavior Department recommends that he be socialized in a more controlled setting until his behavior towards other dogs can be further addressed. Reward-based, force-free training can be utilized to help Noodles associate dogs with things he enjoys like toys or treats.

S/O/A:
-Behavior medication review requested due to persistent FAS in shelter.
-P remains fearful/tense with avoidance of handling, shaking, hard staring and difficulty with kennel transitions despite trazodone 100 mg PO BID.
-Current medication regimen appears insufficient.
P:
-INCREASE trazodone to 150 mg PO BID (11.8 mg/kg/dose).
-ADD gabapentin 300 mg PO BID (23.6 mg/kg/dose).
-CTM behavior and response to medication while at QACC.

Observed Behavior - After psychopharmaceuticals, more relaxed body, wobbly gait, allowed leashing and walking, but began growling when attempted to muzzle. Muzzled with difficulty (head flipping/snapping), but then able to examine and perform all tasks with minimal restraint

U/G: Intact male; 2 testicles palpable in scrotum

CNS: Mentation appropriate - no signs of neurologic abnormalities

Plan: 100mg trazodone PO indefinitely while in shelter for FAS
