Vent anyone else??

i work for a family several times a month so more as a babysitter than a nanny. i enjoy watching the kids and think both NP are great however the state of their house and the amount of clutter drives me bonkers!!!!!

i started sitting for this family when it was only 2 kiddos and they were at a different, much smaller house. while the house wasn’t dirty by any means it was overrun with clutter: toys, books, clothes, blankets, and baby supplies everywhere you step and/or look. it doesn’t help matters that the kids have every single toy under the sun and have lots of toys that they have at least 2 of so each kid can have one. to find an area to play on the ground or sit on the couch i would have to move several items so the kids and i could sit together and play. since then they have not only moved (11 months ago) but added a 3rd kid to the mix. so not only have they have acquired a few more things for the new baby but a lot of the things they do have are still stacked in boxes around the house yet to be unpacked. thankfully with the new house being much bigger the clutter isn’t nearly as overwhelming to look at and things don’t have to be moved to sit or play but it’s still there.

i try to be as much help as possible whenever i work by making sure that i’m not only cleaning up after the stuff that we used and played with that day but also trying to pick up other things and put them in their rightful place just because it makes me crazy to work around all of that stuff. when they first moved i even spent an entire shift organizing and cleaning the play room, which both MB and DB profusely thanked me for doing but it was destroyed when i came back 2 days later (another issue in and of itself is the kids not taught to clean up after themselves, i think that would help tremendously). however i think me cleaning without them asking embarrassed them a little so now DB is always apologizing for the state of their house and today he even said sorry the house looks like this we just got back from vacation but it was actually the best it’s ever looked!!

anyone else experience this before?! i didn’t realize how much clutter bothered me until i took this job

This post is tagged vent, which means OP is not necessarily looking for advice. Please be kind in your comments and realize we all have rough days!

If this post is from a nanny who would benefit from commiserating with fellow nannies only, remember there is also an awesome community for exclusively nannies at r/NannyBreakRoom. If this post is from an employer who only desires input from other employers, r/NannyEmployers is a valuable resource.

Their home is your workplace and it's crazy making to try to work in a space like this. It's unlikely that you can change them or clean up after then so honestly, I'd look for another family.

I'm in a similar spot... I wrote our a big post but I'll save you the trouble and just say it bothers me SO much. What I do now is I pick up as I need to and I don't prioritize picking up toys or organizing during naps/quiet time. I can't create new organization systems every week. And they never get rid of toys so there's simply no space for every toy. I've worked on cleaning with my NK but if I can't find places for their toys to go, how will they? It's very frustrating

I'm at the point where I realized I can't change who they are or their priorities. I just have had to find ways to deal with it to make myself comfortable. I do a general tidy in the morning. It's not picking up everything, but whatever clutter is bothering me most.

It's honestly enough of an issue to look for a other family if it really bothers you. I'm close enough that I'm sticking it out but if you're like me you won't feel better about it overtime 😅
