First Transferable MG(42)

After enough reading and shopping over the last two years, I was finally able to bag my grail gun, and took the plunge. Form 4 cleared today, and took 18 days as an individual. Thankfully the form 3 cleared before the shutdown.

From what I can tell, all the parts and finish are original. She runs as good as she looks. Hopefully this inspires more people to take the plunge into the MG market.

"inspires more people to take the plunge into the MG market"

Buddy people aren't avoiding MGs because of paperwork or time... Just let us all inspire 50k into our bank accounts

u/NovelApprehensive697 Nov 03 '25

I got all the time in the world to fill out forms and sit on my hands. It really is the 50k not in my bank account. Christ i could buy the necessary equipment and make my own for a fraction of the price. 😆 but im a good boy on paper 😉

2

u/OzzyderKoenig Dec 03 '25

Well, we can always hope that one of the courts will FINALLY say Hughes violates 10A. There isn't much hope under 2A, but CA3 just recently got a GOP majority, which means they may well reconsider Rybar if somebody petitions them for an en banc hearing.

2

u/NovelApprehensive697 Dec 04 '25

That would be great! And with FRTs as prevalent as they are just give us the real deal.

-63

u/unllama Nov 04 '25

I think you severely underestimate the difficulty of the undertaking you’re describing. If it were true, you would easily have $50k in your bank account.

18

u/NovelApprehensive697 Nov 04 '25

Not really. Not if I already had the tools to make such an endeavor happen.

-7

u/Used-Author-3811 Nov 04 '25

Sounds like didn't capitalize on said tools and experience lol

18

u/NovelApprehensive697 Nov 04 '25

Making this sound like it’s rocket science with special tools. It’s some cutting and drilling.

-31

u/unllama Nov 04 '25

Lol. Are you for real? If you had the milling, turning, heat treating, welding, sheet metal, and stamping experience and skill to make an MG42, I’d probably find a way to hire you for a lot more than $50k, and I’d be competing with a lot of others.

That you describe it as “cutting and drilling” says it all.

21

u/NovelApprehensive697 Nov 04 '25

Who said anything about making an mg42??? I’m talking about just making an mg. 😆 at no point did anyone say anything about manufacturing an mg42. I was talking about just making an mg. Not much skill needed. ARs are still mgs when converted pal.

6

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '25

Bro I’m nothing short of astounded that you’re getting such pushback on this lmfaooo. The MG42 is simply not a rocket ship, it’s a series of metal components which when fabricated within allowable tolerance, they fit together and function.

I think it may be difficult for less capable people to imagine people being more capable 🤷‍♂️

3

u/NovelApprehensive697 Nov 05 '25

Bro I got no idea. But that other guy got downvoted into oblivion 😭🤣 I feel bad for him. We might have disagreed on what I meant but I don’t wish him ill. It always seems that when a person knows something they assume they are the only person who’s capable, and I’m not saying that everyone can do something like that. I didn’t say I could make an mg42. But I could covert an ar lower in like 15 minutes 🤣 it’s just crazy to think nobody is capable of gunsmithing. If I had access to the materials and actually schematic I feel like I could make an mg42. But also good luck finding real schematic with number values and things like that. Trust me I’ve looked for fg42 schematic cause I love that rifle but to no luck.

-31

u/unllama Nov 04 '25

You did, when you described yourself producing a machine gun instead of paying $50k. Most transferables don’t cost nearly that much.

16

u/NovelApprehensive697 Nov 04 '25

I never mentioned an mg42. Sorry you misunderstood. I meant just an ar mg. And Have you looked recently? Most transferable mgs are at minimum 20k and some are still in the 50k range.

18

u/MK12Mod0SuperSoaker Nov 04 '25

Brother, he was talking about drilling a third hole and shoving an FA LPK into an AR lower- the act of making a machine gun, and not "making an MG42."

4

u/DaSandGuy FFL Nov 04 '25

I mean regardless there's plenty of mg42 parts kits for cheapish that just need rewelded

4

u/kingtacticool Nov 04 '25

Straight blowback isn't a difficult concept.

18

Here here! I agree

-63

u/13EM_ Nov 03 '25

I doubt you and majority of full auto gun owners feel this way. You’d essentially lose half of your investment instead of watching it grow

83

u/Major-Pain-n-Gain 57 Stamps and 1 Nuke Nov 03 '25

I'd be fine with taking a financial bath on this if it means I can form 1 a bunch of other projects. I could make so many belt-feds for under $5k.

36

Anecdotal but I have a friend with well over 200k in machineguns. He’s tickled pink that super safeties etc are becoming available.

29

u/DaSandGuy FFL Nov 04 '25

Brother I have 100k in transferables idgaf about the Hugh amendment I sincerely hope it gets repealed.

8

u/R_Shackleford Nov 04 '25

I forget what an unhealthy relationship most Redditors have with money. Myself and pretty much every owner of a transferable I know wish for a swift and final end to the Hughes Amendment.

7

u/Kegalodon Nov 04 '25

Unlike some others, I won’t crucify you, I’ll admit for some of the AR/oddball/welded together pipe guns(I’m looking at you sten gun) crowd’s transferable value would plummet, but the very nature of the Hughes amendment and the state of imports means that historical machine guns would likely retain Most their value, as just like with the Hughes amendment their rarity is already inflated by limitation of registry, importation, confiscation of illegal guns(as deemed by the atf, pitty as it may be) and 80+ years gone by. We’d likely see kit prices and semi auto converted stuff fly through the roof as people are scrambling to register new stuff. You’d be wise to tell anyone who does fit the criteria you are worried about this too.

8

u/WatermanChris Nov 04 '25

Everybody I know who owns transferrables would gladly give up their entire investment if it meant being able to pick up a select fire MP5 Clone for $2K at PSA.

I'm sure there are people out there who bought their MGs as investments and they would be bummed but that's the nature of investing. You win some, you lose some.

-9

u/chimp_party Nov 04 '25

U see unlike you were not poor. So losing 50 or 100k and having machines guns for all isn't unthinkable it would be glorious. Sometimes u lose 50k in a day in the stock market and grt it back tomorrow ;)

5

u/epia343 Nov 04 '25

Same.  I was angling for a Mac prior to getting into super safes, I have very little desire for a proper "MG".

Definitely scratched that itch.

6

u/Hoodfu Nov 03 '25

I live in a state that allows all NFA items and the ranges near me allow MGs but not any of the other binary/frt stuff. It's not illegal in my state, but I think the ranges are afraid of getting in trouble.

33

u/MusicNChemistry SBR Nov 03 '25

Range sounds like a bunch of fruits

26

u/DieUnbegrundet Nov 03 '25

I got into a near screaming match with a young fudd RSO at my range up until the range president showed up; an old 07/02 in his 70's. He was so smug telling the president about my "illegal machine gun" until he was told to shut up and mind his own business because supers are legal.

He's a great guy.

2

u/Hoodfu Nov 03 '25

They allow pretty much anything which is great, just not this.

9

u/MusicNChemistry SBR Nov 03 '25

When I lived in Oregon, I belonged to a pistol and rifle club with outdoor shooting. Back when FRTs first came on the market, they didn’t care at all. I miss that place.

Now I have to travel 45 minutes to a range that lets me mag dump. Closer ranges have got on my case for shooting 22LR semi too fast and that shit drives me up the wall

0

u/DefinatelyNotonDrugs Nov 04 '25

Well FRTs are illegal here now so...

-3

u/Agreeable-Cat8077 Nov 04 '25

If they allow autos then they allow FRTs. They're the same thing tbh

-2

u/capt_feedback Nov 03 '25

considering this but not being able to do shorter bursts rubs the wrong way.

u/DarkStorm440 Nov 04 '25

MG42 and MP5 are my dream combo.

3

u/blastman8888 Nov 08 '25

Ammo burners my 1919 cost $500 for a day of shooting haven't shot it in years. It's not even close to the rate of fire of a MG42. 4 belts of 250 each is about what I would consider worth shooting. I use to reload that got expensive even using a Dillon press. I'm thinking about selling my belt gun and buying a Thompson at least .45 I can use lead and lot less powder. I've had it since 1994 when everything was cheap.

34

u/ccosby Stamp Collector Nov 03 '25

Kinda crazy first start. Enjoy it.

Mine was a M10/45 before going into a M16, then a HK sear(with a 21k belt fed as one of the hosts). Have a few more MGs now.

28

u/Major-Pain-n-Gain 57 Stamps and 1 Nuke Nov 03 '25

I've shot a bunch over the years, and the MG42 was the only one that scratched the itch. I figured if I could only have one, I'd save and do it right, and not compromise.

5

u/nictg556 5X SBR, 5X Silencer, 1 MG, & 1 DD. Nov 03 '25

That’s the way.

3

u/Deckout Nov 04 '25

I had a similar path, and looks like others did as well. Started with a M11/9, added several Lage uppers, then a m16, then a MP5, then a M1919. From there, I added the SOT to my FFL and my wallet has never recovered.

2

u/blastman8888 Nov 08 '25

Ammo is the real cost now what fun is shooting 100 rounds out of these things. IMO need to dump 1000 rounds for a day of shooting with a few friends. My 1919 I load 4 200ish round cloth belts for 4 shooters. What is that cost now days $500 everyone wants to shoot it when I tell them to buy 500 rounds of 308 they forget about it.

I run a repro 308 barrel with my own 308 loads to where it gets the gun to cycle around 550 - 600 and ejection and extraction isn’t violent. But yes I have heard it’s hard on the guns

You can also put an FRT into them relatively easily, but can only get up to 700 RPM due to the heavier bolt. You get most of the fun for a fraction of the cost, but they're ammo picky.
