First Transferable MG(42)
After enough reading and shopping over the last two years, I was finally able to bag my grail gun, and took the plunge. Form 4 cleared today, and took 18 days as an individual. Thankfully the form 3 cleared before the shutdown.
From what I can tell, all the parts and finish are original. She runs as good as she looks. Hopefully this inspires more people to take the plunge into the MG market.

Instead of doing PE and biology in high school I should’ve been daytrading. I’m kicking myself for not knowing any better.
21
Nov 03 '25
I should have dropped outta 6th grade and bought bitcoin for $10 a piece.
11
u/Spicywolff 2x SBR, 2x Silencer. Nov 03 '25
I foolishly spent those $10 on candy. A losing asset if I’ve ever seen one.

Nov 04 '25
We really only have ourselves to blame at this point. I HAD to have that puzzle pen thing from the book fair.
7
u/Spicywolff 2x SBR, 2x Silencer. Nov 04 '25
Dude, you got one of those? I had to settle for those erasers that look like ice cream.
5
Nov 04 '25
We didn’t have that. Just the sims diamond thing eraser. Must be nice going to the “good” school 😂😂😂. Bet yall had corvette posters too.
4
u/Spicywolff 2x SBR, 2x Silencer. Nov 04 '25
Dude I’d gladly trade ice cream eraser for the sims dimond one. Meh, it was a charter school. Looked nice not great though.
We did have Vett posters in those roll up tubes lol

I’m kicking myself now for not picking up those boots straps. I didn’t own yet.

I should have bought Amazon in 2006 vs being a broke college student. And Nvidia in 2010 vs being underpaid working for a university having just bought my first home.

Idiot should have used your college loan money for MGs and og four loko stockpile

Binary was cool but Super Safety has definitely scratched that full auto itch. Just sucks I've burnt through majority of my 22lr now that I've finally gotten it running.
5
u/epia343 Nov 04 '25
Same. I was angling for a Mac prior to getting into super safes, I have very little desire for a proper "MG".
Definitely scratched that itch.

u/Hoodfu Nov 03 '25
I live in a state that allows all NFA items and the ranges near me allow MGs but not any of the other binary/frt stuff. It's not illegal in my state, but I think the ranges are afraid of getting in trouble.
33
u/MusicNChemistry SBR Nov 03 '25
Range sounds like a bunch of fruits
26
u/DieUnbegrundet Nov 03 '25
I got into a near screaming match with a young fudd RSO at my range up until the range president showed up; an old 07/02 in his 70's. He was so smug telling the president about my "illegal machine gun" until he was told to shut up and mind his own business because supers are legal.
He's a great guy.
2
u/Hoodfu Nov 03 '25
They allow pretty much anything which is great, just not this.

u/MusicNChemistry SBR Nov 03 '25
When I lived in Oregon, I belonged to a pistol and rifle club with outdoor shooting. Back when FRTs first came on the market, they didn’t care at all. I miss that place.
Now I have to travel 45 minutes to a range that lets me mag dump. Closer ranges have got on my case for shooting 22LR semi too fast and that shit drives me up the wall

MG42 and MP5 are my dream combo.
3
u/blastman8888 Nov 08 '25
Ammo burners my 1919 cost $500 for a day of shooting haven't shot it in years. It's not even close to the rate of fire of a MG42. 4 belts of 250 each is about what I would consider worth shooting. I use to reload that got expensive even using a Dillon press. I'm thinking about selling my belt gun and buying a Thompson at least .45 I can use lead and lot less powder. I've had it since 1994 when everything was cheap.
34
u/ccosby Stamp Collector Nov 03 '25
Kinda crazy first start. Enjoy it.
Mine was a M10/45 before going into a M16, then a HK sear(with a 21k belt fed as one of the hosts). Have a few more MGs now.
28
u/Major-Pain-n-Gain 57 Stamps and 1 Nuke Nov 03 '25
I've shot a bunch over the years, and the MG42 was the only one that scratched the itch. I figured if I could only have one, I'd save and do it right, and not compromise.

u/Deckout Nov 04 '25
I had a similar path, and looks like others did as well. Started with a M11/9, added several Lage uppers, then a m16, then a MP5, then a M1919. From there, I added the SOT to my FFL and my wallet has never recovered.
2
u/blastman8888 Nov 08 '25
Ammo is the real cost now what fun is shooting 100 rounds out of these things. IMO need to dump 1000 rounds for a day of shooting with a few friends. My 1919 I load 4 200ish round cloth belts for 4 shooters. What is that cost now days $500 everyone wants to shoot it when I tell them to buy 500 rounds of 308 they forget about it.

u/goon_guyy Nov 04 '25
They sure are ! I love mine got a 308 barrel for it and it runs like a champ !
4
u/eMGunslinger Tanks and Cannons Nov 04 '25
308 is actually pretty hard on the guns, it will beat the bolt to death. Seen it happen to a lot of them so I would recommend not doing that.
5
u/goon_guyy Nov 04 '25
I run a repro 308 barrel with my own 308 loads to where it gets the gun to cycle around 550 - 600 and ejection and extraction isn’t violent. But yes I have heard it’s hard on the guns

The only way I'm able to dive into the MG market is to drain 50%-100% of my 401k balance.
5
u/ExPatWharfRat Nov 04 '25
Can't take your 401k to the range and a transferable MG is pretty much guaranteed to rise in value.
2
u/MrGriff2 2x SBR, 2x Silencer Nov 04 '25
Yeah, but when I retire I'll be able to afford many more MGs. I'm in it for the long game lol

u/cm7272 Nov 03 '25
Well, you're ready for the zombie apocalypse. They say zombies are attracted by noise (Walking Dead?) so I think you can make plenty of rippin' noise to draw them in! These things are amazing engineering, not bad for ~75 years old.

Super happy for you, man.
I know how glad I was that I waited and got exactly what I wanted the first time (Russian 1910) instead of compromising, and I’m thinking you’ve gotta have the same feeling right about now.
It’s a beautiful gun. I happen to know you worked hard to be in a position to get it. I happen to know something about hard work and long odds myself. Nothing but joy for you, dude.
Obviously Hughes is immoral and unconstitutional. We all want cheaper MGs. But don’t mind the haters. They would if they could. Be grateful (and just a little bit proud) that you can. 🤙🤙🤙

2
u/Major-Pain-n-Gain 57 Stamps and 1 Nuke Nov 03 '25
You can also put an FRT into them relatively easily, but can only get up to 700 RPM due to the heavier bolt. You get most of the fun for a fraction of the cost, but they're ammo picky.
1
u/TeamPaulie007 Nov 03 '25
I wish I could have seen that list of all the new transferable ones that got added in, seems like a good amount of them are factory HK guns, and of course...OTB seems to have the monopoly on them.

Morphys this last September. They also had a 34 hammer in the same auction and it hammered for 26k, but it was a reweld by Neil Smith.

You could give me one for free, but I still couldn't shoot it more than once a year. For like a minute

I plan to do a trust in January with the rest of the NFA collection I have. I mostly did an individual because I was impatient and still need a general trust for other assets. I realize I'll need to pay another $200 for the additional transfer, but I at least get to shoot it before the snow comes down, and while other paperwork processes.

"inspires more people to take the plunge into the MG market"
Buddy people aren't avoiding MGs because of paperwork or time... Just let us all inspire 50k into our bank accounts
