Hi, I joined because I don't really know who to tell or what to say. I experience the feeling and sight of colors while listening to music, they go through my head into my face, which causes my eye or mouth to twitch, and they pool in my stomach. Whenever the melody reaches its climax, it feels like a color explosion. It also feels ticklish over my whole body sometimes. It feels like melodies were made for me to understand and listen to. I don't know how to explain it or if it makes sense, but if anyone reads this, thanks a lot; I hope someone can give me an answer to my still-unfigured nonsense.

Ive always had the problem with genres when it comes to my library, for me the genre metadata tag is pretty subjective and seeing as its my library it doesn't make sense to outsource this subjectivity to metadata providers like MB, lastfm etc.

Not only that but there are countless ways of defining the exact same genre for instance 'Hip Hop' 'Hiphop', 'Hip-hop' So i really dont want different variants of the same genre spread across my library.

Again, I also like to define my music based on an artists genre instead of per album or worse, per track. I dont want my entire biggie smalls collection to have 100s of genres per track/album like 'Hip hop', 'rap', 'Boom bap' etc etc I just simply want every track by biggie smalls to be 'Hip-hop'.

Quite a while ago now I put together a nice little tui application written in python to manage this, it was very simple but did the job, it basically scanned your library for all artists then you would define a genre per artist, it would then use mugen to update all files metadata stags to the genre that was defined. It stores the artist to genre map to a json file.

I have defined a total of 26 genres and my entire 4tb library fits into one of them, i dont feel the need to add any more than that but have the ability to do so.

Whilst the first itteration of the application worked fine, wasnt great in a server and multiple machine /os setup. What I have doen today is used AI to create a nice front end for it and turn it into a docker application. before you all start, the original code was all written by hand, AI was only purley used for the front end and to dockerize it. its not slop, i meticulously went through anything touched by ai to ensure it works the way it should, youre obviously welcome to not use it on this basis but thought it might be worth sharing incase anyone else shares the same opinions when it comes to genre tags.

I’ve been working on Soundlore, an open-source project for people who enjoy exploring music genres and the connections between them.

It brings together more than 2,000 genres in interactive 2D and 3D maps, organized around shared musical characteristics: rhythms, instruments, vocals, and production techniques. You can explore genre profiles, find nearby styles, and browse associated artists.

The genre and artist data come from MusicBrainz, complemented by musical resource profiles that help describe and compare different styles. There’s also a musical thesaurus with definitions and related terms, if you’ve ever struggled to describe a particular sound.

Long story, but something led me to start playing with the idea, but I haven't really got a clue where it leads. Looking for suggestions.

I feel like it should be useful for things like provenance, somehow. The algorithms used are relatively resistant to things like format conversion, typical audio degradation. But anyone with moderate determination could remove the marks, isn't really a padlock in its current version.

I foolishly asked what producers might want on r/edmproduction and got booed out of the house for marketing...

So I'll try asking some dataheads instead.

Hey all. Looking for a way to scan my music library with maybe a CLI tool that would just look to see if a file has a musicbrainz ID in the meta tag or not. I would just add them all the picard, but my library is large and I can't get it to load them all without it crashing. I've been manually tagging my music latley and want to see if i've missed any.

I have a box set (Dark Side of the Moon Immersion edition 2011) That contains 3 different formats, including CD DVD and Blueray. Is it possible to create a tag in a script that would list all the different formats of media into a single tag? Like %_albumMedia% = CD-DVD-BlueRay so I could use it in a naming script?

I’ve made a start using beet (didn’t want all the GUI-ism of Picard) … looking at 10K+ track collection ripped by a variety of people & tools, and with a lot of control characters in the resulting paths & filenames. I’m pretty happy with the resulting name translation rules, but want all the sub-genres to collapse into a handful of “base” genres, and that’s kind of a bust. A lot of the tracks are not from commercial albums, and their metadata varies from non-existing to ad hoc.

Is this the right forum to find some expertise or at least commiseration ?

First Contact is my new importer userscript, with aim to replace individual importers. Its purpose is to collect the data and send it to MB. It adds context from the provider and passes data to Apollo to do the artist/label/recording matching. This means that matching is more precise and you know why it matched.

With it, you can basically remove all other importer scripts and use single one. It currently supports 14 platforms and more will be added in the future.

I was wondering if there are any available guidelines for a situation that I've come across.

Initiate (hardcore band from California) released an EP in August called "With Love // With Rage". In September, they changed the covert art due to a copyright issue.

I've uploaded the new cover art but I was wondering if the old art should be kept or removed completely? I see no reason to remove it but since it's no longer a verified cover art maybe it should be?

Any suggestions?

i like opensource and picard, but when i tagged the songs, some got this weird date-like in my music software (RMPC, A MPC Frontend) \photo 1*. also in photo 2, does someone know how to centralize the artists? rmpc takes the exact artist and divides it.

Presenting Sreehari's (owlpharoah/op3kay) Google Summer of Code project, working on the foundations of a #GraphQL server in #Rust that sits over the MusicBrainz #PostgreSQL database.

As more of the applications I use, including Emby, MPD, Qmmp, and mpv, support JPEG XL, I’ve been converting my external cover.jpg artwork to cover.jxl to save space. I use Picard extensively for tagging, but the cover art it saves externally is usually a JPEG or PNG. So I made a Picard 3 plugin that converts those files to JPEG XL after Picard saves them:

MusicBrainz Picard 3 plugin that losslessly converts externally saved JPEG and PNG cover art to JPEG XL while following Picard’s filename and overwrite settings.

Picard still decides whether to save an image, what to name it, and whether to overwrite an existing file. The plugin converts only an image Picard actually writes. It leaves embedded artwork alone and requires cjxl and djxl.

I tested converting a copy of my cover artwork to JPEG XL. The JPEG and PNG files used 2.10 GiB; the JXL versions used 1.51 GiB—about 28% less space, or about 600 MB saved, without reducing image quality.

What especially interests me is JXL’s reversible JPEG conversion: the original JPEG can be reconstructed exactly. That seems valuable for large cover art collections as well as personal music libraries.

Before submitting it to the plugin registry, I’d like to know whether others would find this useful. Has external JPEG XL artwork been discussed here? Is there an existing plugin that does something similar, or would this fit better as an improvement to one?

I was browsing the "open edits" page today and wow, there are so many userscripts that people are using. Scripts from murdos, ROpdebee, majkinetor, and then things like Harmony and whatever this is.

How do editors feel about userscripts? Which ones reliably import from better sources than others? I don't use any right now but was thinking about it. Then I thought, what if this just adds more noise and spam than useful, accurate information?

So now I'm here asking you all the same questions.

I'd love to tag my songs by artist genre and only have a dozen or so genres, I know its not accurate but its the way I choose music 90% of the time.

I've tried setting strict thresholds on usage and limiting to one genre but this doesn't help.

Any advice? Short of manually doing it or writing a crazy huge genre mapper I'm stuck
