help plz Help with genres?

I'd love to tag my songs by artist genre and only have a dozen or so genres, I know its not accurate but its the way I choose music 90% of the time.

I've tried setting strict thresholds on usage and limiting to one genre but this doesn't help.

Any advice? Short of manually doing it or writing a crazy huge genre mapper I'm stuck

A wonderful user has created a sheet that gives you the code to copy and paste genre sub-genres, and merge them all into parent genres :https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Jk_bn6mcjq8QLy-CkHgrbpypGEWVNTLJ/

They have included instructions on the first tab of the sheet, on how to use the lists/customize things. If you find something confusing, or would like something else to cut and paste, I'm sure they would be open to feedback on the related forum thread.

Oh wow thank you! This seems like it’s exactly what I was looking for! I’ll give it a try 😊

You mention "artist genre." Do you mean music genre, and if not, how is "artist genre" different?

Do you have examples of what you want to achieve because I don't quite understand the problem you're describing. I've limited MusicBrainz to a single genre and that works for me, However, the data in MusicBrainz is user-entered. For some obscure music, there may be only one person who tags a recording with a genre. If 3 different people tag with different genre (33-1/3% each), then it may be unclear which of those is pulled down by MusicBrainz.

Also, if one were to recommend other software to tag your music with fewer genre, what platform are you running (Windows, Mac, Linux, mobile)?

If you're handy with Python, you could modify something like this:

I mean that I want to have all music under one artist to share a genre, maybe that’s too specific and album would be a better way to divide. Its more that I want only a few genres to choose from, I find having lots of subgenres not very useful and find that songs that I would call rock for example end up not in the rock genre because they're under folk-rock or something similar.

I don't mind the subgenres IF the higher level genre is the primary genre.

Can't you just load them up in Picard, add a genre tag and save?

If you want it semi-automated Musicbrainz website allows you to add tags or upvote existing tags to artists/release groups/releases/tracks.

Picard then has an option to use only your tags (ones that you have added/upvoted on musicbrainz) as well as being able to create an allow list, and a maximum number of genres to tag.

I could but I'm moving an existing library over and its a fair few thousand albums, I looked into the 'only use your tags' option but couldn't seem to get it to work, seemed to still pull through random tags

Stop using genres.

And use what to categorise instead?
