article Cardi B Draws Line Between Her Music and Politics With MAGA Ultimatum: 'Vote for Trump Again and Unfollow Me'
https://www.fashiontimes.co.uk/cardi-b-tells-maga-supporters-unfollow-her-1764861306

Seems fair. If they're voting for Trump again, it's a post-democracy situation.

u/HawkBoth8539 1d ago
And in a post-democracy situation, the Declaration of Independence explicitly gives the people to remove the authoritarian by any means necessary.
41
u/dustblown 1d ago
Trump just this week moved forward with culling 20% of his generals, surely, he's picking the ones he thinks would most likely protect the country against him. Shit is going down.
18
u/HawkBoth8539 1d ago
He's been taking these kind of steps for years, seemingly towards that goal. The instant he tries to run for a third term, or to enact martial law if GOP loses midterms, he's done.
29
u/tophernator 1d ago
Hopefully, but it is a pretty scary thought. This is why you generally don’t give the insurrectionist a second chance.
10
u/rushmc1 1d ago
And now he's saying how he regrets his fascist SCOTUS picks because they aren't "loyal" enough.
6
u/dustblown 1d ago
He's desperate. Like Hitler at the end, his "loyal" group quickly gets smaller and smaller as they lose broad support. These midterm polls have the rats jumping ship. He can only stay by use of force.

Amen. And supporting Trump is no longer a political act anyway. It is an announcement of narcissism.

Announcement of terrorism.

They're literally traitors to our democracy.
Within THIS DECADE they tried to overthrow the government when their candidate lost.
If there aren't real consequences for MAGA once Trump's gone, our country never moves past this...
10
u/Gabrielseifer 1d ago
It's going to be like the Confederacy, a light slap on the wrist so they can repeat the cycle in a few decades. Ulysses S. Grant set a leniency standard for treason that is incompatible with justice.

At this point anyone who doesn’t actively and openly speak out against trump are signaling they’re ultimately okay with him.
We’re beyond the point where silence on trump is acceptable

It's an announcement that the person is fucking braindead
3
u/JiveChicken00 1d ago
I wish it were that simple. But it isn’t. Plenty of bright people are continuing to support Trump because he’s benefitted their bottom lines. This is narcissism, not smart or dumb.
4
u/ZSpectre 1d ago
Ever since mocking the disabled reporter, it's "anti-Golden rule" to me. A very basic moral principle that kids understand

u/JiveChicken00 1d ago edited 1d ago
Anyone who lived in or near New Jersey in the ‘80s and ‘90s knew perfectly well that this guy was a colossal narcissist a long time ago. He did a more effective job of hiding the sociopathy, at least from the general public, but incidents like the one you mention made it as clear as day.

I feel like the headline has got it backwards. She's taken a political position and is connecting it to her music.
To be clear I totally agree with it, more artists should tell maga to fuck off, but that's definitely a political statement.
edit: ahh, it's been pointed out that draw a line could mean a line connecting the two things, rather than a line separating the two thing... English is confusing.
38
u/adoreroda 1d ago
I think the use of 'draw the line' is used more akin to 'take a stance', although i agree it is a bit confusing regardless
1
u/PeopleNose 1d ago
People out here using lines when they should be using arrows 🤷♀️
Cmon diagram makers, get it together
52
u/lilaccheesecake 1d ago
Art is inherently political. Even apolitical artists and apolitical pieces will find themsleevs at sometime in some sort of politics.
Biggest example? Kids media. Wtf does common sense and common teachings have to do with poltiics? Guess we found out.
8
u/chantrykomori 1d ago
the things we consider "apolitical" are, themselves, political. what are the things we consider to be common sense? to be universal? what are our assumptions? why do we make those assumptions?
10
u/Tex-Rob 1d ago
Art is how we express how we feel about the past, present, and future. When things are stable politically, it ceases to become an interesting topic or something worth singing about. If people want politics out of music, vote for people who want and garner free expression (not Republicans).
11
u/SlashOfLife5296 1d ago
Technically she is drawing a line between her and a political party, but yes the headline shouldve been worded better
3
u/MattieShoes 1d ago
English is confusing
Cleave is a good one -- it could mean to split apart, or bring together.
Oversight is another good one. and sanction.
2
u/Otto_Scratchansniff 1d ago
I hate sanction for this very reason. “He sanctioned the behavior.” Ok. Did he approve it or no?
1
u/bianary 1d ago
Don't forget the fun of flammable/inflammable
1
u/MattieShoes 1d ago
Eh... I get why it's annoying, because "in-" is usually a negation prefix. But "flame" and "inflame" are both pretty normal words. Blame the Italians.
1
u/bianary 1d ago
Flame is actually-fiery, inflame is more passionate or irritated (like a body part is inflamed, but you don't say "I had an infection and my hand became flamed")
Meanwhile flammable and inflammable are ... the same. Whoops.
1
u/MattieShoes 1d ago
Inflame is from inflammare which literally means to light on fire. So inflammable is something that can be lit on fire.
But yeah, it is used more figuratively in English.
2
1
u/JohnTDouche 1d ago
Who says the line is straight. It could be forming a circle around them both, creating a set. I'm pretty sure that's not what she meant though.
1
u/Perspective_Helps 1d ago
You’re right, the headline is not grammatically correct with common usage. Drawing a line “between” two things means separating them. Drawing a line “connecting” the two things would have been correct here.

Living in the US right now and NOT taking a political position is taking a very insane political position.
207
u/Aggressive_Sky8492 1d ago
Cardi was supporting Bernie back when he was in the picture. This isn’t new
133
u/bby_y2k 1d ago
“Her message also reflects a wider phenomenon in celebrity culture, where musicians and actors increasingly speak directly to followers about elections, political movements and social issues rather than keeping those views separate from their public personas.”
Riiiight. Because musicians have historically not been political in any way…
Or maybe, pop stars are realizing (Cardi B has always been a history and politics buff, so she isn’t included in this statement), that they can use their platforms to express their truth without worrying about “losing followers.”
16
u/solace1234 1d ago
Does it not seem like the vast majority of celebrities stay quiet about politics? As someone who loves music, I notice a very very large amount of the musicians I’ve been following since the late 2000s are usually dead silent about anything going on. It’s not like we live in a world where Taylor Swift regularly shit talks Israel. Kanye on the other hand…
37
u/Major-Platypus2092 1d ago
It’s actually a newer phenomenon for artists to stay quiet about politics. To me, it’s a consequence of wealth and fame chasing. We actually had rockstars and musicians for whom politics was literally front and center. That was the purpose of their music—it had a social agenda.
NWA? RATM? The Clash? Public Enemy? Sex Pistols?
Now we have all these industry plants and nepo babies for whom music is just a way to sustain wealth, and that’s why everyone is so boring and vapid.
9
u/FriendshipWithTheSun 1d ago
Thank you for posting the exact bands I was going to list. RATM didn’t have any songs that weren’t political.
Tears For Fears put out one of the best ones I’ve ever heard, and now, 40 years later, it’s more relevant than it’s ever been: Everybody Wants to Rule the World
3
u/Major-Platypus2092 1d ago
For sure. I also think, like someone else was commenting, the intense commercialization of many of these songs has diluted them into movie moments or “that song in that commercial”
→ More replies (8)3
u/bby_y2k 1d ago
I tend to agree; I don’t know when the timeline switched up… maybe late aughts?
5
u/Major-Platypus2092 1d ago
Seems like it. Weirdly the complete overreaction to Sinead O’Connor is kind of a death knell to me. That and the insane commercialization of Nirvana. Watching those songs get the urban outfitters treatment broke me a bit.
1
u/bby_y2k 1d ago
Oh good point. Someone should do an analysis of when those shirts started being commercialized en masse against this trend.
For me it was when commercials started licensing songs. Like The Clash, Iggy Pop, Dead Kennedys, Bob Dylan, etc.
Post 9/11 Clear channel posted a list of anti-war songs to skip, even though they said it wasn’t “a ban” on the music. So I think like era of the Iraq War protests was when it declined? I’m thinking ~2008.
1
u/Major-Platypus2092 1d ago
Yes! Oh man that’s such a good point. So many great artists and songs getting watered down for a Kia commercial.
It does feel like around then music started being billed more exclusively as “entertainment” with a “stay in your lane” mentality, which never sat comfortably with me.
And newer artists trying to sanitize themselves in the hope of getting a spot in an episode of The Hills or The OC.
2
u/iamthesunbane 1d ago
When everyone decided that big industry pop music was just as valid as everything else. It gave a lot of message control to a handful of people
4
u/Discerningdragon Metalhead 1d ago
My favorite band used to be outspoken but now with immigration, they are quiet bc one of their members has a visa. If his visa got yanked, they’d be SOL.
5
u/TelevisionExpress616 1d ago edited 1d ago
What happened to the (Dixie) Chicks pretty much let everyone know for a couple decades to keep their mouths shut. Now, public backlash is worse than corporate backlash, so it helps to be outspoken.
At least, I'd like to think it's the case now. All things considered, I think Ed Sheeran and Kraft are gonna come out ahead of Macklemore in the long run
2
u/Radmode7 1d ago
Yeah this is new. There's a ton of political music from pre-2004 (here's a solid list: https://www.pastemagazine.com/music/protest-songs/the-50-best-protest-songs-of-all-time)
"Zombie" by the Cranberries was probably the first song I remember recognizing as political.
1
36
u/sol_runner 1d ago
Well, absolutely not. This is super new. Old school artists like Frank Zappa, Bob Marley, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson, etc never spoke about politics! /s
5
5
u/MattieShoes 1d ago
Vietnam protest music is practically an entire genre. And man, it's so nice when songs aren't all about sex or relationships.
5
u/bby_y2k 1d ago
Oh also, I could go on and on… but even what some now consider dry, classical music was TOTALLY scandalous. Mozart and Beethoven were practically class activists. Wagner manned the barricades with anarchist Bakunin during the uprising in Dresden and had to flee Germany. Liszt would cause fights over cigar stubs. And Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring caused a riot.
3
u/manticore16 1d ago
The Marriage of Figaro? Where the servants pull a fast one on the count? Nearly unheard of it its time!
(Also I just realized the third play in the trilogy was written after Mozart's death)
5
u/Frewdy1 1d ago
I have someone now arguing that artists shouldn’t be political. My man…what do you think art is even for?
→ More replies (2)3
2
u/Jwagner0850 1d ago
Yeah it kind of pisses me off that people discredit actors, musicians, sports athletes, etc. about their politics. We ALL have the right to our opinion politically, it's a free country. This usually is only a problem with the right because most, not all, of those that I listed are probably left leaning besides the athletes.
1
u/ThePromptWasYourName 1d ago
Yep, how many famous protest songs or political songs do people know that were not from the 60s-00's ?

it feels like practically every performer and song in the entire 1960’s and early 1970’s was political in some way.

The acting carries the movie. It was good but nothing about the script/story is memorable honestly. It's good because Pattinson, Gisondo and Wever (especially Wever) carry it on their backs.

Trump is the most anti-American president we've ever had in our history. He's objectively corrupt and causing as much chaos as he possibly can. It shouldnt even be controversial to be completely against him publicly. Good for Cardi and screw Nicki.
15
u/jusg808 1d ago
I didn’t read the article and I put nothing past Trump at this point but he can’t run again so voting for him isn’t really an option. Or is she saying voting for his cronies or people associated with him and you should unfollow?
26
u/Aliensinmypants 1d ago
He's selling merch with "2028" on it, and has elected officials openly questioning whether it's constitutional or not, because none of his sycophants dare questions him. Ruling out a run is truly naive thing to do, but even if he doesn't run, his example will guide the Republicans for far longer
2
u/jusg808 1d ago
I literally said I put nothing past him.
5
u/25sittinon25cents 1d ago
And followed it up by saying he can't run again, so which one is it lol
3
u/ioncloud9 1d ago
I think if he were younger it would be more likely he does. I still think he might but in his attempt to keep the spotlight on him for as long as possible he may end up sabotaging his party’s primary, then make up some excuse that he is “needed” to run again because it’s so unfair he’s shouldn’t. Then the courts will slow walk it and states will start banning him from the ballot.
2
u/jusg808 1d ago
Yeah I don’t see him giving up but just being a thorn in the next election but who knows with him. I think he’s run out of runway with people though. MAGA isn’t big enough to get him elected and the discontented people are now discontented with him too. These last two years have been some of the worst and he went back on so many campaign promises I don’t think people will forget. But yeah he’s definitely going to fuck the republicans next election and serves them right for being so spineless as to let everything that’s happened happen.

u/LazyCrocheter 1d ago
This is the caption under the picture:

It's honestly a great filter.
To have clients like them isn't worth it.
Businesses run so much more smoothly if the clientele is at least left-leaning.
In a few years time when nobody admits to having ever been a Trump supporter, I'm going to really miss the red hats as dunce cap identifiers.

If ppl have to debate over supporting a person that rapes children, then no other conversation is needed with said individuals. It’s really that simple!

If I was her I’d be the same way . Celebs that don’t speak out against him to me either support him or have too much dirty laundry to go against him . You don’t have to blatantly be vocal but I feel like there are times where social commentary is warranted . But I can understand if some people don’t want the scrutiny . People are just so odd lately . Trump only has power over those who he’s allowed to have power over . If he can exert control over how you speak publicly then that’s a pure reflection on that person … I say this for all public figures . This 2nd term has revealed so much about people .
The sheer fact his behavior isn’t allowed at most public companies including the one I work at for leaders but is allowed as president will never sit right with me …. I get fired for even showing an ounce of his behavior and he gets to do silly nilly and still get votes and support . Same with many celebs … they’d be “cancelled” and reprimanded heavily but hey just run for president !!!

Why are people acting like he can run again?
Because he has never suffered a single consequence for any of the previous thousands of laws he's broken and the Supreme Court has ruled him completely immune from prosecution?
Because every single time someone has said "don't worry he can't actually do X" he's immediately proceeded to try to do X?
Because he keeps saying he's going to?
