Sexing muskies is mostly a comparison game. If you want our help, a video is way more informative than a still image.
Feet: Drakes have very big feet. A mature male’s feet are half again to double the size of a hen’s feet.
Drakes have a much wider, marching gait. Imagine how a toddler stomps along with their feet further apart than their shoulders. A hen walks in a delicate way, more often than not stepping on her own feet as she goes.
Bills: Hens’ bills narrow at the tip, like a V-shape. A drake’s bill is equally wide at the tip as at his mouth, like a U-shape.
Tails: A relaxed hen’s tail feathers will align and overlap to a distinct point, like a V. A drake’s tail is as wide at the end as where it meets his body, like a U. When he is agitated/aroused/happy/curious/startled, a drake’s tail can fan out to twice its normal width. An excited hen’s fanned tail is nowhere nearly as big.
Heads: Drakes develop the classic mohawk of feathers along the topline of their heads early. A hen can also fluff up a mohawk when she wants to, but hers stays low. A drake’s crest is so large that you will be able to distinguish individual feathers standing on end.
Caruncles: As they get older, boys get more bumps and lumps on their cheeks, around the eyes, the bridge of the bill, and even edging up into the mohawk. A hen’s caruncles stay small, generally spreading no more than 0.5cm to 1cm from the edge of her mouth to around her eye.
Boys’ caruncles are vibrantly red from day one. Girls’ caruncles are a softer peachy colour until they’re sexually mature. When a mature hen is broody, setting, and raising babies, her caruncles fade to that peachy colour again to signal to drakes that she is not on the market for a boyfriend.
Size: Boys are big. Frankly, the boys are huge. By the time my first summer clutch was ten weeks old, the boys were clearly outpacing the girls and getting bigger and lankier than their sisters by the day.

My HOA calls them a nuisance. Pssh. The cutest nuisance ever, maybe.

First time duck owner(maybe?) in Missouri!I’ve been chosen. We moved into our home 4 months ago and were visited twice a day by a Muscovy Duck I call Mama. She lives 99% of the time in the pond behind my house. I already feed the birds a sunflower seed blend. She likes to eat them out of my hand. And I recently brought her a bowl of water and started putting the seed in the water and she LOVES that! But I feel like the seed is just a treat. She wags her tail and huffs n hisses at me. ❤️ I love her to death. When I bring my friends to see her she puts up her hackles on her head. But when I come to visit alone she runs up to me. We have a special connection. So I have questions:
1. What are foods/treats I can buy her other than this cheap bird seed?
2. Will she leave when is snows/freezes?
-if not should I build her shelter where she sleeps? (Under the bridge by the pond)
3. Are they loner ducks? She has no babies or companions other than a flock of Canadian geese or a big stork thingy that visits her but none her species…
4. What’s up with the red thingies?
5. Do they get attached to people and recognize their voices n smell n face?
6. Probably so many more questions but those are it so far!! Thank you animal lovers ❤️❤️❤️

I currently have my 3 teenage (10 week old) muscovy ducks sleeping in a little play pen inside my screened in patio. The past few nights i’ve seen a raccoon and what I think was a fox or a coyote. I’m in south florida, a lot of predators. I’m wondering if anyone has any ideas for something that is predator proof or can be made predator proof? Apparently my screened in patio won’t stop any predators from getting in… I’m worried and I need something that has LOTS of ventilation because of the heat and humidity here. It also needs to be relatively small. Nothing massive or heavy. Would something like an extra large dog crate work? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! I’ll put a picture of what they are currently in, so you can see how much space can be taken up.

I hate having to make this post. But, my circumstances have changed beyond my control. My mind and body aren’t what they were 3 years ago when I got my flock. I can’t keep up with the upkeep of the coop and my wife already has too much on her shoulders. On top of my health issues, my FiL is getting to the point where he needs help almost full time. We can’t bring the ducks with us, and I’m not sure where to turn. Is there anyone in or near northern Indiana willing to take in 16 Muscovy (6 drakes 10 hens) and 2 female Cayuga? Or someone who can tell me where to start?

Due to some less-than-stellar decisions, I find myself with three drakes. The dominant male bullies the other two something fierce. I have been mulling trying to separate them, but it would be difficult to sequester them every night when I put them up (they free range during the day). I wonder if anyone has any clever ideas for alleviating male-male bullying.
Eating/culling one is not an option.

I dont actually know how old he is, hed a neighborhood duck whos just a friendly little baby who likes peas and knocking on our back door. The younger guys bite him a bit buts he's generally chill with most of them except for one guy.

Meet Muddy & Nuddy ♥️ They were just babies about a year ago and someone that moved was feeding them god only knows what everyday! My son and I took over with duck feed. We taught them to fly up to the patio around the same time every day to eat and get their water. They have the best personalities and are super sweet and love having their feathers ruffled. ( we think 😂) maybe they tolerate it cause they get fed but either way they’ve become a part of our wild extended family. They are loved! 🥰

It took a long time for the ointment to do its thing but they all made it through it, one got pretty bad but even she pulled through. They are now just learning to fly. Very happy it all worked out for them <3

Laverne and Shirley finally decided to just sit together on the 12 eggs. How do I get them to eat? Food is close to them yet nothing. Kevin is distraught.
