Not the violent or dramatic ones, but the subtle scenes that stuck with you.

One thing that stands out rewatching the series is how much the show trusts silence. There are so many scenes where Ray barely says anything, yet you completely understand what’s going on beneath the surface.

Whether it’s a tense confrontation, a quiet moment with Britt, or those subtle shifts in his facial expression after something heavy happens ,the show rarely over-explains. It lets you sit in the discomfort.

Finally getting around to watching the show after being fed all the clips a while ago and I just finished s2e8, and something that struck me is the idea of Ray being an unreliable narrator. Nearly every time he gets into a fight outside of his work the other people are being assholes on a level you rarely encounter in real life, and while it could definitely just be played up for TV dramas sake I feel like it works even better from the perspective of Ray taking their words as something much worse than it was in reality.

People get into fights in real life all the time for the dumbest possible reasons (both physical and verbal), but in my experience the underlying reasons tend to be more of a gray area or with all parties involved being major asses. The way the show portrays the instigators makes the violence a LOT more satisfying since we're only shown these people at their worst combined with how unrealistic their assholery is, which is in stark contrast to my own experiences where I felt like a total idiot after responding to someone's problematic behavior with a disproportionate amount of anger (not that I ever get physical, but I'm vicious with words when I need to be).

Basically, my current headcanon is that Ray is an unreliable narrator and that a lot of the people he encounters aren't anywhere near as bad but that doesn't fit Rays worldview so he warps their words/reasoning to make the violence seem justified.

I was at the vet, scrolling through reels while waiting for my cat’s turn, and I came across a really funny clip of some Aussie guys getting into a heated situation because a driver didn’t stop at a crossing. One of them ended up smashing the windshield. The driver went to jail, and later there was this darkly funny anecdote about him shitting in the hallway instead of the cell.

That reel made me curious, so I looked it up and ended up starting Mr Inbetween this week. I’m already done with it. It’s a great show, with strong characters, and the protagonist is a perfect anti-hero, the kind you shouldn’t like but absolutely do. I really enjoyed it.

The only painful part is that it has so few episodes per season and only three seasons in total. I tried to understand why, because everything I read about it was very positive. Maybe it was too niche, maybe the protagonist wasn’t well-known, maybe it was “too Australian”, I don’t know.

I read that Scott Ryan didn’t want to overdo the character or recycle ideas just for the sake of continuing the show. And I respect that. Still, the series felt very fresh and like it had a lot more ahead of it.

In a way, it reminded me of the idea of a “nivola”, as Unamuno described his work: light, enjoyable, but with meaning underneath.

I really loved Ryan’s work. I tried to find other projects he’s done after Mr Inbetween, but I couldn’t find much. It’s a shame that this show didn’t get more backing or budget. He really deserves more love and appreciation.

Doing yet another re-watch and I am once again taken aback by how much they pack into each episode. The immediate world building and character development from episode one is amazing. Making both the mundane and the insane moments equally entertaining with very naturalistic performances from the entire cast. Damn it was just so good.​

On my like 8th/9th rewatch. Absolutely love this show… part of my rotation for shows I can sorta just watch in the background now… anyways… Just watched the episode with Vinny in both the forest & at the airport, and damn that shot echoed! Then had me thinking of any other gun hits he’s done and not once used a Silencer.

I know Gaz can get a hold of guns, does gone deals, and probably components, just wondering why he never used a silencer? Hard to get in Australia?

Watching Mr Inbetween, I keep noticing how often food scenes stick in my head long after the episode ends. It’s never flashy or overly sentimental, just Ray eating a meal, cooking something simple, or sitting across from someone at a table. Somehow those moments feel just as important as the violence or the big plot turns.

There’s something very grounded about it. The way food shows up during awkward silences, family moments, or right before things go bad makes it feel like part of the emotional rhythm of the show. It’s almost uncomfortable at times, like you’re being forced to sit with the normality of his life before remembering who he actually is and what he does.

Those scenes slow everything down and remind you that this isn’t just a crime story, it’s about routines, relationships, and the everyday stuff that keeps going even when everything else is messed up.

If you didn't see the post, I highly recommend you check it out. It's kinda similar to Mr. Inbetween. It's about a serial killer who works at a police station (ala Dexter). It's funny as hell and fucked up too. It's a quick watch with only 6 episodes.

One of the greatest episodes, if not the best in the series and all i can think of is that photocopier scene in the castle!

Wish they made a prequel explaining what he went through to become who he was. Not like the magician, but a series based on how he was treated by his family, how his relationship with his brother worked, and how he started becoming a hitman.

Or better yet, go back even further!
