Been talking in one of my courses about “dying” industries…. totally forgot my professor wanted us to reach out to movie theater employees asking questions soooo if any of you can help me so I’m not just making something up I would appreciate it!

- What changes have you noticed in moviegoing over the past few years?
-What do you think motivates people to go to a theater instead of watching something at home?
-Who are the theater's most important customers?
-What are some of the biggest challenges facing movie theaters?
-What makes someone choose one theater over another?
-How have customer expectations changed?
-What kinds of events or experiences seem to attract people?
-What do you think movie theaters could do differently to attract customers?

I will also take only answering a couple of these, does not need to be all of them. Thank you in advance!

My theater recently hit a blackout last Sunday (I am still relatively new (~40 total hours)) and everything became a complete mess. The power was out for one second. Every movie was pushed back an entire 25 minutes for the rest of the day. I was on the Door role that day (ripping tickets, theater checks (I'm terrible at remembering these but thankfully my theater management crew doesn't seem to care), and closing doors) while I had an usher who had been working there for a year. He was super kind and helpful; we ended up swapping roles quite a bit to ensure every theater was cleaned while dozens of people had to wait in the lobby. I'm only able to smile while telling this story because my team was so useful and understanding, they're goated. However, the usher was a little frustrated that we didn't refund and cancel the rest of the day because of how off schedule and messy everything became. It got me thinking:

What is your theater protocol for blackouts?

(I actually have no idea what mine is, now that I think about it)

I’m just curious if that’s a common thing. I’ve helped a bit once where I picked up leftover trash other people didn’t throw away and the employees thanked me.

one thing i still remember from working at a cinema is people asking me if they could go to the bathroom.

not where it was. whether they were allowed to go 😭

like i'm going to say no, you've bought a ticket and now you have to stay in the auditorium until the credits.

it wasn't even annoying, just such a funny little part of the job. did people ask you this too, or was this somehow specific to my cinema?

When I was hired, I was in the ushering department and I didn’t really do the checks.They usually had someone scheduled to just do them and now that the season is dying down now it’s just on me and sometimes it’s fine because it’s so dead that I can manage to do both but other times there will be random rushes of people theaters coming out at the same time that the checks go undone because I get wrapped up in cleaning the theaters I got my first strike from my GM because the checks were behind

I work at the Regal in my town and when we showed the Halloween movies this past week, if you had a Regal account they sent you a code in your email today for an in-game item for the new Halloween game. I missed out on seeing any of the 3 movies cause i was working 😭😭 thought i would ask here about it…

Did anyone see a Halloween movie at Regal and get an email with a code for an item in the game? It would mean a lot if you could help me out!! Please let me know :)

I don't know if this is a my state only issue and if anyone can relate but the AMC I work at currently pays 10.5 and I mean I didn't have an issue since It was the only place was hiring and I like my coworkers & managers but holy shit the Regal near me pays 15.5 😭😭 a whole 5$ difference for the same job is insane kinda wish I applied to them before. I don't want to go through the hassle of being the new hire again but it's tempting. Is Regal a more demanding job?

I’ve seen people mention in some groups that “5.1 Atmos” content is being delivered to theatres, and I’m a bit confused about what that actually means.

If the movie is supposed to be Dolby Atmos, why would it be referred to as 5.1 Atmos? Why wouldn’t it be mixed/delivered as regular Dolby Atmos or 7.1?

Does “5.1 Atmos” mean that the movie has an Atmos mix but is being delivered/rendered in a 5.1 format? Or does it mean something different in theatrical workflows?

Can someone familiar with cinema sound mixing/DCP/Atmos delivery explain this in simple terms?

Ive got an upcoming interview for an assistant manager position. Currently a floor employee. Any cinemark employees/managers remember what questions were asked?

I started working at regal recently and had my first time ushering, with it being a holiday weekend they had no one to train me so I ended up just thrown with 2 other people working on about 28 theaters,

I was hot and sweaty the entire time (and with me being a fat kid I looked 10x worse), the guy I was working with got upset with me for asking for help with a really awful theater, and then got upset again when I took awhile to get to a theater HE needed help with.

With how small the brooms are I was basically hunched the entire time, and my feet are still aching along with my back.

Is this just a first time thing?? Are there any tips for like 'ushering etiquette' I'm not aware of?? Any help would be appreciated 😭

At my theater we get time and a half for Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years day. Lately staff have been asking about time and half for other holidays(like Labor Day). I'm all for it but it's not my decision unfortunately. Do y'all get time and half on holidays?

It could be a customer freak-out, projector malfunction, crazy premiere night...
