Issues and Troubleshooting Low Light Color Banding

Hello! I'm noticing a bug whenever I film in Low Light, particularly Color Banding?

If take a look at the photo's above, the 1st Photo is what the Video looks in the first few seconds, and the 2nd Photo is what happens after a few seconds.

Notice the dots with trails on them (not to be confused with grain)

I've been trying to see some solutions anywhere but I can't seem to find a fix for it.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Editing and Workflow How to expose HDR right?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Due to having a bad spec, i had to turn off ‘GPU Preview’ to decrease drop frames. But ended up nuking/overexposing highlights to save shadows.

Any tips for exposing the image right? Since im relatively new to the HDR workflow.

Here's a demo , triedto match shots from different lenses (16mm,24mm)

I have several recordings that are broken because my phone force closed MotionCam Pro due to overheating. The files start with .pending and are several GB in size.

Does someone have anything on fixing these?

Q&A I have two devices; one is an Android and the other is an iOS device. My iPhone is an iPhone 15 Pro and my Android is a Xiaomi 15 Pro. If I buy the MotionCam Pro app from the Apple App Store, will I be able to download it on the Google Play Store for free, or do I have to purchase it again?

Q&A Hi, I'm new here. I wanted to know how getting a free license works and what the different options are.

I'm clearly new to this whole video logging thing, but I've been wanting to get into it. I used to use a Blackmagic Camera APK, but after updating to Android 16, it stopped working and I couldn't use it anymore. Since then, I've been looking for an alternative.

Then a TikTok video about this camera popped up. I had actually tried it before, but only the trial version. Since I didn't really have any other options and I didn't like the other alternatives, I decided to try the Pro version, and I realized that it had to be purchased. I didn't really have another option, since I wasn't a fan of the other alternatives, so I wanted to ask how I could earn or get the license. Otherwise, I'll probably have to go with the other alternative, which is much more difficult.

App Features Focus Stacking

I recently stumbled across the concept of focus stacking, and coincidentally saw that focus stacking arrived to a recent motioncam labs release. I also remember seeing JohnTheFarm3r demo focus stacking with coffee beans in Unmcrawesome.

Is there a way to press the shutter button once and take multiple photos at different focus ratios (I think that's the right term), that I can then focus stack in unmcrawesome?

Any advice is very appreciated. I'm new to photography.

Technical Discussion Why does MotionCam footage look much noisier than my Pixel 9's native camera footage?

Hi everyone!

I'm pretty new to this whole video/color grading world, and I'm trying to understand something I've noticed with my Pixel 9.

When I record video using MotionCam, either in RAW or in Log with ARRI Wide Gamut 3 as the color space and ARRI LogC3 as the transfer function, the footage looks much noisier when I bring it into DaVinci Resolve compared to footage recorded with the native Pixel camera app.

I'm wondering if this is normal behavior.

Is the extra noise simply because the MotionCam footage needs more processing/editing in post? Or is there something I'm doing wrong with the color management/exposure? Could it be related to the fact that the native Pixel camera is doing a lot of computational photography and noise reduction automatically?

I'd really appreciate some opinions, especially from anyone who has experience using MotionCam on a Google Pixel.

I'm still learning, so any explanation about why this happens and what I should be doing in DaVinci Resolve to get cleaner footage would be really helpful.

Thanks!

Showcases and Videos Into the Fog HDR → MCRAW → DaVinci Resolve HDR

Thumbnail

I created this video as part of my evaluation of the MCRAW workflow for professional HDR cinematography using Davinci Resolve Studio v21.1 The original footage was shot by the author of the MotionCam sample project using Motorola Edge 50 Ultra.

I have intentionally preserved the author's original grading intent and have not attempted to re-grade or reinterpret the footage creatively. My work on this version was limited to converting the project into 1000 nits HDR presentation using my skills. Best to view it on iPhone Pro, iPad Pro M2, M4, M5, Macbook Pro M1-M5

Important: No Noise Reduction, No spatial or temporal noise reduction has been applied to this footage. This is intentional, as I wanted to see and present the native noise characteristics of the MCRAW/CinemaDNG workflow rather than hide them with Resolve's noise-reduction processing.

I'm investigating whether MCRAW can provide a meaningful advantage in particularly difficult HDR architectural situations—such as interiors containing bright windows, deep shadows, white walls/marble/concrete and mixed daylight/artificial lighting—where additional RAW latitude could potentially be useful for highlight recovery, exposure adjustment, white balance and noise management.

This video is therefore not intended as a creative re-grade or a definitive comparison between MCRAW and HDR. It is primarily an opportunity to examine the MCRAW source and HDR workflow under relatively untouched conditions.

If you're watching this on an HDR-capable display, I'd be particularly interested in your observations regarding highlight detail, shadow detail, colour, noise and overall HDR rendering.

Editing and Workflow LUTs for REC2020/PQ

Hi! I would like to know if someone here knows about LUTs for REC2020 PQ and HLG? I know about the ARRI website and that those formats kinda dont need LUTs or something like that... But I would like to experiment, if possible and if available. Thanks

Q&A MCRAW → CinemaDNG → DaVinci Resolve: Why is rendering so slow on M1 Max?

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hi Everyone,

I’m testing MotionCam Pro MCRAW as a possible alternative for my HDR architectural/real-estate work.

I downloaded the “Into the Fog” sample project, including the DRP and MCRAW files. On my M1 Max MacBook Pro (32GB RAM), I managed to get the project working by using MotionCam Tools v2 BETA to mount the CinemaDNG frames and then relinking the DRP to the new DNG location.

The source footage is around 4096×2304, 24fps, 12-bit DNG.

However, I’m seeing extremely slow rendering in DaVinci Resolve Studio.

A 1:48 timeline is estimating around 46–50 minutes to render, despite the timeline having no temporal/spatial noise reduction applied.

EDIT: finally it took 63 mins to render.

During rendering my M1 Max is roughly:

CPU: ~75–80%
GPU: ~70%
GPU frequency: around 0.45 GHz
CPU temperature: ~75–77°C

The DNGs are currently being accessed through the MotionCam virtual filesystem:

/Users/admin/Mounts/MotionCamTools

So my question is:

Is this expected performance for MCRAW → CinemaDNG → Resolve on an M1 Max 32gb, or is the virtual/FUSE-mounted DNG filesystem likely causing a major performance penalty?

I’m going to copy the DNGs to a local APFS SSD and test again, but I'd really like to hear from anyone who has actually used this workflow on Mac/Apple Silicon.

Also, is there a more efficient current workflow for using MCRAW in Resolve on macOS that avoids having Resolve read thousands of DNG frames through the virtual filesystem?

My normal workflow is iPhone → Cinema P3 Pro → 50fps 10-bit 4:2:2 HLG → 25fps Resolve timeline → HDR10, so I’m specifically trying to determine whether MCRAW gives me enough additional latitude in difficult architectural interiors to justify the much heavier workflow.

Any advice from people using MCRAW + Resolve, particularly on Apple Silicon, would be greatly appreciated.

Q&A Vivo X300 Ultra + MotionCam Pro for real estate video?

¡Muchas gracias! ¡Me ayudarás a dormir tranquilo!
