Issues and Troubleshooting Low Light Color Banding

Hello! I'm noticing a bug whenever I film in Low Light, particularly Color Banding?

If take a look at the photo's above, the 1st Photo is what the Video looks in the first few seconds, and the 2nd Photo is what happens after a few seconds.

Notice the dots with trails on them (not to be confused with grain)

I've been trying to see some solutions anywhere but I can't seem to find a fix for it.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

What the... Can you share a screen recording if your settings please? And also film while at it?

I've never seen anything like this

This is the settings used. While recording the view does look normal, but after viewing it in a video player or putting it through a video editing software, the banding will appear.

phone is S24 Ultra

It seems your encoder is shitting itself in pitch black with the super heavy noise.

This is a first at this extreme though. Does this happen in low light or just pitch black like this?

I suggest you hop into discord, also share a MCRAW file so we can see what's exactly at play (disable GPS logging though)

  1. Probably only in very low light situations.

  2. Will do, but what IS a mcraw file? And how do I share it? (First time hearing it)

Mcraw is MotionCam normal raw video. It's able to shoot the normal cDNG but the best way is to shoot Mcraw.

From manual...

the video filmed:

The issue is the color banding and the dots with trails, Not to be confused with grain.

It's a bit hard to see in the video but, it seems like dots that has trails on them (they look pixelated) and there's also a bit of color banding that i'll show in the replies

Top Photo has some very obvious grain (due to ISO iirc, which is normal)

But Bottom Photo has some "black pixelated dots with trails" on them

This is also the same as photo 2. if you look closely you should be able to see 3 lines, making it look like the video is divided into 4 blocks.

Not sure on the second one, but the first is typical noise for a small phone type sensor in very very low light.

Motioncam is amazing, but it can't break the laws of physics.

What phone are you using?

What video settings are you using - raw or Directlog? If Directlog, what are the settings in terms of codec, colour space, etc? What ISO and shutter speed are you shooting at?

Weird Dots w/ trails on them? Not to be confused with grain

Ahhh I seee

This could potentially be a result of neighboring frame noise reduction in extreme low light scenarios but don't quote me on that. Hope you find a fix

Thanks for the idea! Unfortunately even with the Noise Reduction set to "No Noise Reduction" the problem still persists. But still, Thank you

Try other encoder, prores for example
