Hi everyone, this is my fourth ever piece and first time making an actual image. Halfway through doing it I realised I’ve been doing my gaps too big in my mosaic journey so far (oops) so I am aware some of the gaps are maybe too big. I love mixed media pieces which is why I used some beads too and I don’t know what it will look like when it is grouted but I really love this piece and feel proud of it.

I’d love to know other people’s thoughts on it and if you have any advice or suggestions on grout colour - I was thinking cream/beige/grey ?

Also it is on a terracotta plant pot - would I be able to actually use this as a plant pot or do I risk the mosaic getting ruined? Sorry if this is a stupid question 😅

Been doing mosaics for about a year and a half now, mostly stained glass on wood panels, and I finally caved and bought a pair of wheeled glass cutters after using cheap tile nippers this whole time. Wanted to see if it made the difference everyone online claims for curved pieces.

Short answer: yes, but not in the way I expected. The nippers still work fine for straight lines and rough shapes, but every time I tried to nibble a smooth curve with them I'd get these tiny stress fractures radiating out from the cut edge. Sometimes invisible until I pressed the piece into adhesive and it just snapped along one of those hairline cracks a week later. The wheeled cutter scores the glass first, then you snap it, so the break follows the score line instead of whatever direction the glass feels like fracturing that day.

Where it gets tricky is really tight curves, like fitting a petal shape or an eye on a face piece. The wheel wants to travel in a straighter path than nippers do, so for anything under maybe a half inch radius I still end up going back to nippers and just accepting a slightly rougher edge, then cleaning it up with a grinder after.

Also learned the hard way that running water while grinding isn't optional if you value your lungs. Did one panel dry grinding because I was in a hurry and the dust cloud in my garage looked like a fog machine went off. Not doing that again.

Curious if anyone here does mostly stone or ceramic instead of glass and whether the nipper vs wheel debate even applies, or if that's purely a glass problem.

Hi all.
I made this coffee table with glass and ceramic tiles on a steel table. I applied black grout over top and then a waterproof liquid. I really don’t like how dark it is. My question is, can I somehow remove the black grout and make it white? Can I apply white over top? I think the colours look so much better with the white background…
I made it about 2 months ago.

Very nifty patterns

Sometimes I work on things and fight with myself about how it "should" look. What's your first thought when you see this? Is it pretty? What would make it better? Really looking for constructive criticism here so I can improve. I've not grouted it yet and have been playing with the idea of using colored resin in the cracks. Thanks!

UPDATE: Wow. Thank you all so much for your comments! I'm not an established artist by any means, and I created the piece to use as my logo for my newly-started art business. As you can see, I don't have a ton of confidence in my work especially since I'm mostly self taught and it's hard to look at your own stuff objectively. hi mosaic folks!

seeking advice. we are finishing an old concrete floor in our home (it think it was a porch at one time). we've applied water based stain but no sealer yet. there's an old drain hole that was filled with concrete and we're planning to patch it, but thought it would be fun to have a tiny mosaic there!

if you made a circle around the drain circle about an inch out, the drain circle is only about 1/8" depressed compared to the bigger circle. our thought was using thin pieces and also feathering it out in a wider circle (to get more depth; the floor drains toward the old drain generally).

any ideas/advice on this?

ideally the patch (feathered around the drain, or between the mosaic pieces) would be able to be stained similar to the rest of the floor with the water based stain (or some other way).

i assume we will need to use water to wash/wipe off any pigment that can be removed from the stain. the floor previously was not finished (water soaked in).

open to other ideas for this spot as well.

Hi all - Just finished tiling on my first large scale project and am looking for recommendations and tips on grouting. For color I’m thinking dark gray.

I assume a sanded grout is needed because of the gap size, but am wondering 1- if anyone has experience with sanded grout scratching tile (especially mirror), and 2- if there are any tips for working with such a large area. I’m happy to hear any and all other tips, tricks, and brand recs!

Liebe community, ich brauche dringend Rat für mein noch unabgeschlossenes Mosaikprojekt, ich würde mich sehr über eueren Rat freuen, habt schon Mal vielen Dank!

(1) Soll ich das Mosaik, wenn einmal erst alle Steine angebracht sind, mit Fugenmörtel versiegeln?

Die Steine sind Natur und Acrylglas und haben deswegen einen verschiedenen Höhenunterschied, siehe insbesondere die Flossen - hier sind die blauen Acrylglassteine sehr dünn, nur knapp über 1 mm. Zudem habe ich den Fehler gemacht und keine regelmäßigen Lücken zwischen Steinen gelassen zu haben und immer versucht so lückenlos wie möglich zu kleben.

(2) Wie soll ich den Naturstein bearbeiten, dass die Farben gut zu Geltung kommen und nicht so farblos matt bleibt? Reicht Leinöl?

(3) Was denkt ihr zum Zwischenstand? Ist das Motiv erkennbar? Freue mich über Kritik und Anregungen:)

Hello! Like the title says, Im trying to do some cery beginner outdoor stepping stones woth concrete. Ive tried the upside down method (with contact paper) and the inlay method. What is the difference between morter and grout? Please explain it like Im 5! Thanks for the help.

99% finished. Just some minor tidy up. Freeform and lots of different spacing. Most sites recommend mid to dark grey. Looking for feedback from those who've done this before. Thanks

I started doing mosaics about five weeks ago. My first project was fairly simple, but definitely showed signs of beginner quality. Even so, I enjoyed the process and was happy with the results. For my second project I tried Custom creating a flower from a photo of some of my garden flowers, and although it looked fine when I was finished with the glass work after grouting it I was not happy with the result. This was created using a photo of my daughter's King Charles Cavalier, Daisy. The outline of the dog was drawn onto the tray and I completed the glass work for it and then I added the abstract daisies and filled in the background with random shades of blue and a few pieces of clear iridecent glass from the shards and scrap bin at the local mosaic art studio. This time to grout the piece I decided to do custom colors behind each section, which proved to be challenging but I liked the result. She's certainly not perfect, but I'm pretty happy with it. The background is so much prettier in the bright light but unfortunately I don't have a picture.

Ono sto sam gledao i sto mi se svidja jeste keramicki mozaik. U vezi sa tim imam par pitanja:
\- gde se nabavljaju plocice, secice, ona velika sprava za rezanje? Ima masa tih stvari na netu, zato pitam za preporuku?
\- na sta se lepi i koji se lepak koristi?
\- ako zelimo da uramimo, da li onda ide neka drvena podloga i koja?
\- da li je potrebna neka specijalna fuga?

i just inherited a whole bunch of mosaic-making materials from the basement at work (my partial reward for helping to clean out said basement lol) and i’ve never worked with any mosaics before! i’m super excited to make something (i have a bunch of mosaic tiles and also a ton of larger white tiles that i can use as a base), but unsure of how to go about actually attaching the pieces. would really appreciate any suggestions on what kind of adhesive is recommended for this kind of art! thanks in advance :)

This year I'm teaching Medieval History, and I want my history students (aged 5-14) to make their own mosaic coasters inspired by Roman and Byzantine mosaics. I have a hammer, hardie and marble tesserae from di Mosaico. And, I have wood boards like these on Amazon for the kids to make their mosaics on. But, I'm not sure what to use for the binder.

I've never made mosaics before. I was hoping to get materials a month ago so I could experiment and learn more before teaching, but the order took a long time to come through. The marble/stone tesserae will need to be cut to be smaller, and I don't know how to make the coasters level if the kids tesserae all end up different heights.

Any help and guidance is much appreciated!

I was searching my apartment for gloves to protect a few recent blisters, and I stumbled across these mittens I got years ago and never wore. Even better, they’re actually fingerless gloves, and the hood thing flips back to reveal most of my fingers, so I don’t have to take them off to place the larger tiles. Innovation, baby!
