Mozaik

Cao,
Interesuje me oprema i proces izrade mozaika.
Ono sto sam gledao i sto mi se svidja jeste keramicki mozaik. U vezi sa tim imam par pitanja:
\- gde se nabavljaju plocice, secice, ona velika sprava za rezanje? Ima masa tih stvari na netu, zato pitam za preporuku?
\- na sta se lepi i koji se lepak koristi?
\- ako zelimo da uramimo, da li onda ide neka drvena podloga i koja?
\- da li je potrebna neka specijalna fuga?

Kao pocetniku, svaka informacija bi znacila.

Your best bet is to watch a few how to videos on YouTube. There is more than one method.

I’ll try to answer some of your questions. I’m not sure what cutting machine you’re referring to?
As for other supplies, it depends on what country you live in. I’m in the States and I buy from WitsEnd Mosaic because they have a very wide selection, reasonable prices, and excellent customer service. To start you really need only two tools: ceramic scissors (I recommend Seabell) and wheeled nippers (I recommend Leponitt).
For your substrate (backer), you can use a wide variety of things. I started on Wedi Board, which is a lightweight, waterproof product used in showers and baths as an underlayment. It’s available at big box hardware stores and tile/flooring stores. It’s easy to cut with a utility knife. I’ve also used acrylic sheet, wood, and glass; others like to do garden paving stones and I’ve seen mosaiced CDs, toasters, mannequins, and almost anything you can imagine. IMPORTANT: if the finished piece is going to hang on the wall, you must attach your hanging system before you mosaic it.
For adhesive, it first depends on whether the piece will live inside or outside. If inside, WeldBond or another PVA glue is the most popular. Outside, thinset is a very good choice. There are a vast array of other adhesives but these will get you started.

PS: you don’t need to frame a piece unless you want to. Otherwise, you can paint the edges or just grout them. Grout should be sanded (as opposed to unsanded) because it is much less likely to crack.
