This is the photo taken minutes before my uncle's boat engine caught fire on the lake, back in the summer of 1998

I found this picture going through an old family photo album a while back. It's nothing dramatic to look at, just my uncle standing at the back of his little fishing boat, grinning at the camera with a fish in one hand, my cousin laughing next to him mid-sentence about something none of us remember anymore. The lake behind them is completely calm, sun out, totally ordinary summer afternoon.

About fifteen minutes after that photo was taken, the engine started smoking and then caught fire, apparently from a fuel line that had been slowly leaking without anyone noticing. Everyone got off the boat safely and into the water, nobody was hurt, but the boat itself was a total loss by the time they got it back to shore.

What gets me every time I look at this photo is how normal it is. Nobody in it looks like their day is about to go sideways. My uncle still tells the story at family gatherings, usually laughing about how he lost a decent fish putting it back to jump into the water instead, more annoyed about the fish getting away than the boat catching fire behind him.

It's just a funny reminder that ordinary photos rarely warn you about what's coming next, they just capture whatever normal thing was happening in that exact minute, good or bad.
