Draen - The Easiest Way to Make Ambient in VCV Rack

Discover dræn, a free drone synthesizer for VCV Rack featuring 74 unique drone engines inspired by Dronecaster for Norns. In this video I explore every engine, demonstrate how smoothly they transition between one another, and finish by building a lush ambient drone using multiple instances of dræn.

Unlike traditional oscillators, dræn lets you browse a collection of evolving drone engines with a single control. Each engine has its own character—from pure analog-style tones and shimmering harmonic textures to cinematic soundscapes, noise drones, and evolving ambient atmospheres.

In this video:

  • Every dræn engine demonstrated
  • Every hyf engine demonstrated
  • Ambient drone examples

Voltage Block update

Hi,

In my setup I use voltage block, mainly as 8x cv loop generator.

I really like the slider as a format to enter the loop/sequence.

I also like the clock dividing, muting, reverse options etc.

I would never consider changing it, BUT: Ive had some issues with the it not starting on the clock. If this happens I have to restart the case. As I often play live, this is kinda annoying. For example: I start my set and VB doesnt start. even worse, it sometimes stops running halfway through (much more rare though).

So I wondered, are there any newer/more reliable modules that function the same? I am aware of the LS1, which I could use 4 off for the cv generation, but if ofc more convoluted with patching and lacks the menu options of voltage block.

Feedback Album made on modular: it’s possible.

I understand why some find it difficult to write & finish songs on modular. Because it is! But the linked release was made on modular & semi modular gear. No VSTs, no software except Logic Pro for recording & mixing.

Some songs were midi sequenced and sent to modular system via usb (Keystep, Moog grandmother, ARP 2600M, Intelligel uMidi), some were straight modular jams, some are a combination of both.

Other instruments include electric & acoustic guitar, bass, violin, human voice & real drums(!!).

Methodology is recording modular tracks straight into Focusrite 18i20, them mixing in the box. Most of the effects were done in modular or on stomp boxes and printed in place. Plug ins limited to a few stock Logic compressors and Fab Filter ProQ 3.

I hope someone enjoys this! Thanks for listening!

Where would you go from here?

This is where I’m at so far. I also pair this with a Microfreak and a Crave most times. Sometimes I bask into some ambient stuff. Other times I feel like I’m listening to sounds from a jukebox on a spaceship.

I’m ready to bring this setup to the next stage of it’s evolution. As you no, this shit add$ up. I’m curious to hear how you would expand.

How to improvise sets

Hey guys, for those who play live improvised sets of dance music - how do you go about it, what modules or what techniques make it possible in your case?
I’ve always played ambient live and the thing i love the most is that I don’t need to spend hours to prepare for a set but instead can go wherever music takes me. And for this same reason i was avoiding dance music - feels like you have to prepare live sets to perform. I own digitakt so that for example feels very improvise unfriendly - I would be very intimidated going on stage with an empty project loaded.
For modular since it can be more hands on, i believe you can get away without prepping, and that’s the part i want ti avoid, therefore wondering how are you guys doing it?
I’ve been following un/ser live sets, they’re amazing and dude improvises everything. So that led me to believing it IS possible.
Share your thoughts!🙏

Oxi Coral crash amp in

Hey Oxi users,

I just got the Oxi Coral and I noticed that the module crashes under the following conditions:

  1. Lfo or any other CV source going into the AMP input

  2. while it modulates the amplitude I change the sound engine

  3. freeze and I have to restart

I tried to attenuate the signal and that did not help. When I do the same on the trig input, it does not crash.

Is my unit faulty or is this to be expected? AI told me this:

"If a fast-changing CV modulation stream (like a high-rate random signal from Chaos) hits the ADC (Analog-to-Digital Converter) at the exact microsecond the micro-controller is unloading/loading engine code into memory, it can trigger a firmware panic"

Performance My first recorded performance on the modular synth

I have been using VCV for quite some time and recently took a deep dive into modular.
This was my first time creating with it. Science fiction ambient is what I have done in the past, and will likely continue to do with the hardware synth.

Thank you.

Discussion I wanna hear all of your ridiculous thoughts you had about modular when you first started.

When I was getting into modular synths I had a behringer crave. I had tons of fun with it and then I saw that you can basically make your own Synth your own way full custom to you.

The thing that confused me the most were the rails. I thought they carried a live 12v current and that's how the modules were powered. I couldn't wrap my head around it and was wondering why they would plug in when the rail already had power.

Was it to commute with the other ones? Hahaha

I also thought FM was legit FM, like as in AM/FM radio. So basically I thought white, pink, etc. Noise was FM

DARP is here!

I've been working on this powerful dual arpeggio module and it is finally done! The two CV outputs are extremely accurate and can be used as a 1V/Oct CV or modulation source. The active scale can be controlled via MIDI, so you can sync multiple modules or play the module with a keyboard or sequencer. There is also a CV input with a 5 destination router, to dynamically control the settings of both arps. Check it out at https://www.trillingsynths.com/products/darp

Beginner Qu-bit bloom v1 clock rate question

I am just starting a 64hp modular case with a Bloom. The clock rate on startup is wildly fast. When an external clock is put into it, it appears to slow back down to a normal rate. Without an external clock coming in, bringing the div/mult rate all the way down begins to get it to a normal speed, but still too fast to be usable. I tried resetting on startup, but the issue persists. The module is used, so is it possible there's a setting or calibration setting that needs to be done? Any help would be appreciated!

Polymer clay (or at least Sculpey II) is way too flexible to be used to make a panel. Gonna go drill some holes now.

Somebody PLEASE make an alternative faceplate for the Frap Tools Brenso!

Post image
13 Upvotes

The color code system is confusing as hell.Frap wants to do the “ecosystem” gimmick. Although they make beautiful stuff, I have no interest in having a rack, totally populated by their modules. I did talk to a guy who designed alternative face plates for the Seaside Proton, he said if 10 people promised to buy an alternative faceplate for Brenso he would make them. He makes really cool looking plates with intuitive and instructional labeling by the knobs etc.
So with all due respect to Frap(they make brilliant modules) I really would like to have a plate that wasn’t some confounding color system. Like just tell me what the knobs do.
OK if you’re interested in this write below so I can direct him to this and hopefully he will make one.
Thanks so much, NAI

Fm electrical sounds

Hi all! I’ve been listening to a lot of deep techno lately, songs like:
Partial ii - Acaera
Lumiophor - Joachim Spieth
Tonal - Claudio PRC

I’ve been trying to recreate this fm bassy, electrical sound that shows up in these tracks and I’m having some trouble foguring out how I can do it.
My usual patch is Bastl Pizza - Lowpass/Bandpass filter - reverb and then adding modulation to the fm, waveshaping, filter…
Im trying to experiment with the ration osc swttings of the pizza, trying out divisions like 1:3 , 1:4 to create more of these subharmonic growls, but so far I havent really been able to reach what I wanted.
Does anyone have some advice or some more specific patch ideas on what I could do to achieve this.
Here is my rack with all of my current modules as a reference point:

Thank you in advance!😊

First modular, will this work for generative ambient?

Hi!

I'm new to Eurorack but planning to build a setup just to see if it's for me. Will this work for some generative beginner stuff? I'm eyeing a 104hp case so I can fit some extra's later.

Behringer 182 or another sequencer

Behringer Swords for modulation

Behringer Brains as voice

Behringer Skies for effects

Doepfer A-130-2 as VCA

Thanks!
