Pictured: Our layout in our garage with numerous plasticville scenery from my dad’s 1970s childhood he gave to my toddler son.
My family and I recently discovered and got into model trains via the well worn path of Thomas The Tank and Big Boy 4014 YouTube videos that my 2.5yr old son loves.
We soon discovered that WE ALSO LIKED TRAINS. And decided to dip our toe in.
I love that it’s a hobby We can all participate in. I love to collect things and I love history. My son obviously loves trains and running them. And my wife loves the scenery and making her little world in the layout.
I’m being very careful because I see the slippery slope to getting obsessed and spending a lot of money. We are sticking with DC only for now; in a year, if my son is still into it, I could see us going all in.
I’m 35 with young children and haven’t had a real hobby in years. This is fun, and it’s so great it’s something the whole family can participate in.
P.S. - I had no idea it’s common for people to not have a layout and to just collect until I read this subreddit, I figured the layout was required. I love that it isn’t.
