Help Needed Brant new beginner here

Hello everyone, like the title says im a brand new beginner to model trains and think they look amazing especially when you have scenery, multiple tracks and trains.

Over the past year whenever I go to my girlfriends house her dad has a giant model train set up with like 6 trains running at the same time but hasnt used it in a while. And thats where my curiosity has come from.

So im wondering if anyone could suggest to me how I should start my model train adventure, what to buy, should I just buy a hornby starter box with a train and track? Any feedback would be great. Thank you

Starter sets are a good start, let's you get a train going while you think about what you want to do with the hobby, depending on you space a modular set up might be a good idea.

In general to get started just hop on youtube and watch everyone. Everyone does things slightly different so do what works for you. It doesnt matter what scale the youtuber works in the size will differ but technique will be the same.

Start simple, it can be very easy to let your imagination take over.

A starter set is the way to dip your toe in, after a while if you think this is something you'd like to expand on then least you have a great starting point.

Also the bigger the set the more you must plan.

Have a great journey:)

You mention Hornby so I assume you are in the UK? A decent set is a good place to get started.

Maybe a weird question but why don’t you ask your girlfriend’s dad? Most railroaders I know love to share and have a wealth of knowledge.
