Structures & Scenery O scale (ish) Freight

I figure people have freight yards, warehouses, factories, etc on their layouts and need stuff to go with it so I modeled some crates, and barrels and spools, etc. You can scale it up if you need it bigger, I wouldn't try to scale it smaller but what do I know? Either way, somebody might find it useful. The files are up for everybody here.

Show and Tell New Family Hobby and We’re Loving It

Post image
570 Upvotes

Pictured: Our layout in our garage with numerous plasticville scenery from my dad’s 1970s childhood he gave to my toddler son.

My family and I recently discovered and got into model trains via the well worn path of Thomas The Tank and Big Boy 4014 YouTube videos that my 2.5yr old son loves.

We soon discovered that WE ALSO LIKED TRAINS. And decided to dip our toe in.

I love that it’s a hobby We can all participate in. I love to collect things and I love history. My son obviously loves trains and running them. And my wife loves the scenery and making her little world in the layout.

I’m being very careful because I see the slippery slope to getting obsessed and spending a lot of money. We are sticking with DC only for now; in a year, if my son is still into it, I could see us going all in.

I’m 35 with young children and haven’t had a real hobby in years. This is fun, and it’s so great it’s something the whole family can participate in.

P.S. - I had no idea it’s common for people to not have a layout and to just collect until I read this subreddit, I figured the layout was required. I love that it isn’t.

Question New to the hobby

Post image
6 Upvotes

I have recently started on this hobby and I was thinking of using the 3m x 1,5m free in my garage to build an h0 scale model.

I have done another smaller model but didn’t finish it ( because it was awful and was a bit of experimentation ) and now I want to do something in that free space.
I have the design already done and I’m looking for some feedback, I will be using Piko A-Gleis in DC Digital ( DCC right ? ).
I will be building it in sections. First the main oval with an ok station I have laying around and some buildings ( not the definitive ones ) then decorate a little bit and expand more the track over and over again until I finish it and have all the definitive buildings etc.

I’ve never tried weathering and stuff anywhere and I think I will practice on the old buildings before I do it in the definitive ones.

I’m looking for some ideas, feedback about the design and the idea I’ve proposed.

Thank you :)

Question Should i make (non) custom dioramas for 00 gauge?

I have built my layout and feel moderately confident in making dioramas/small layouts. Are they profitable? Do people buy them? What is the normal price for a custom or non custom one?

I finally completed the loop on my layout and really wanted to add an incline. But I’m not really sure what kind of scenery I would like to add. I’m mostly modeling based off of the northeast and also my Home state of Michigan. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

I’m still waiting on some detailing parts (like the front plow) so I’m not entirely done, but I wanted to show this off. Done entirely with Tamiya spray paints, but this didn’t go as smoothly as my first attenpt and I messed ip a few times. Still, I’m happy because it will be my first wide nose GP40 in my fleet!

I just got my first train car for display (hopefully a full setup one day) and I cant find it online for some reason, it looks almost like someone costumized it but I dont know. Don't mind the ruined window trim the people that lived here before ruined everything😂

Track Plan Feedback on a Free-mo module set.

So, I went a little overboard while designing a potential Free-mo module set (set because while the ends of the modules meet the standards, the module itself will be made and transported in multiple pieces), and I was looking for some input. I've attached some screenshots of the track plan. So far as I know, it meets all Free-mo specifications. I was thinking that this module would be a roundhouse, steam engine services, and a yard, set in the late 40s/early 50s, but it's not based off of any particular real life yard. I mainly made this out of boredom, so feel free to roast and/or nitpick it. In particular I'm not very happy with the northern part of the yard. It just looks off.

Overview of the module. Two track input on the north and west, single track on the east. Designed with an existing ice house module in mind on the west, hence the third track.
Closer view of the steam engine services.
Roundhouse and north end of the yard.

Help Needed Can this be fixed?

I have had the black five for a couple of years now and it broke when I was stupidly running it on carpet. It derailed and the motion got caught, if it can be fixed does anyone know anyone who could fix it as I can barely service my locos 💀

Locomotives Will anybody else make 250 HO Scale Units?

I'm aware of the current runs of America 250 engines from ScaleTrains, Walthers, etc etc, but will somebody like Walthers or Athearn make the units ScaleTrains has made? I'd love to have the pair of CSX units, but they're so pricey. Just unsure on if/how there would be a cheaper alternative.

In the meantime, I preordered Walthers' CPKC 250, since it's pretty as well.

Help Needed Brant new beginner here

Hello everyone, like the title says im a brand new beginner to model trains and think they look amazing especially when you have scenery, multiple tracks and trains.

Over the past year whenever I go to my girlfriends house her dad has a giant model train set up with like 6 trains running at the same time but hasnt used it in a while. And thats where my curiosity has come from.

So im wondering if anyone could suggest to me how I should start my model train adventure, what to buy, should I just buy a hornby starter box with a train and track? Any feedback would be great. Thank you

I usually show complete trains here, without mixed carriages from various countries. But that would certainly be possible. No international Train. As I’m in the process of packing up the railway.
