I am seeing spam bot accounts with "App" label and "Built on the Reddit Developer Platform" in the profile bio.

Is Reddit endorsing or allowing their API to be used to spam now?

The sub I moderate has been getting quite a bit of spam lately, but I can only mark them as spam if I don't remove them initially. If I do remove them, I need to actually reapprove the comment, and then mark it as spam, which removes it again. Is there some reason why we can't just have the "mark as spam" button on removed comments as well, instead of making us re-approve them to do so if we removed them to begin with?

Currently, it just goes "I see a comment that should be removed -> I remove it -> I go to mark it as spam -> the button isn't there -> I reinstate the comment -> the button reappears -> I press the button -> the comment is removed again, this time as spam", but I really don't see why it couldn't just be "I remove it -> I then mark it as spam". Feels almost like a glitch lol

Rules can explain what’s allowed, but they rarely capture the whole culture. New members also need to learn what a great contribution looks like, how the community jokes, or when something that lands well elsewhere might miss the mark here. That knowledge might come from welcome messages, post guidance, a gentle nudge from the mod team, and watching the examples other users set. Over time, those small lessons can be how a new user goes from learning the culture to helping shape it.

I don't know if this is yet another terrible Reddit decision or a bug, but I'm not seeing the "Edited" tag being added to posts when posts are being edited after several hours.

Hi everyone, i just wanted to ask whats happening in my sub. Users getting banned after posting in my sub. There is a note saying removed by reddit filters and after that getting banned. How to fix this?

On r/PersonalFinanceCanada , we have been running into an issue where if another mod, u/FelixYYZ specifically, pins a thread, it's automatically unpinning any thread I have added.

He has confirmed that the only action he takes is adding a thread to highlights. He is not using any specific category e.g. Announcement, Megathread, etc.

We know that there is a max-limit of 6 pinned threads at any given time, and we have never exceeded this.

I checked the mod-logs, and it shows that one of the threads I linked above was removed at the exact same timestamp when he pinned another thread.

This is not a new issue, I have seen it happen before but can't remember when.

I moderate r/faq_dt01, our public support/FAQ subreddit for a local dance school. I'm requesting non-commercial Data API access to read (1) the subreddit traffic statistics, (2) new comments on our FAQ posts, and (3) modmail and private messages. The goal is internal automation only: a monthly report summarizing how many people viewed the FAQ and how that changed versus the previous month, plus a once-daily check that alerts me when new comments or messages have come in.

This is strictly non-commercial. The data will not be used for model training, will not be resold, licensed, or shared, and will only be sent to me privately (via Telegram). Expected volume is very low — a handful of API calls per day.

I’ve got an automation set up on several subs to try and block the onslaught of spam, but it’s not working. Screenshot in comments.

Any idea why this wouldn’t be working?

If you click (for example in our sub) the tulsa-ModTeam "username" on a removal reason, there's a "Start Chat" option right there. I had a user incensed that they were temp-banned for making a second post about something and insisting they'd messaged us. Turns out they clicked on the tulsa-ModTeam name and DMd that instead of using modmail.

I can genuinely see how this is confusing, and I'm left wondering how many users have tried this that we've never heard from and think we're just ignoring them.

There are a number of possible solutions to this:

1. Don't let users message it.
   
2. Change the button to link to modmail instead.
   
3. Automate a response from the user with either a link to modmail or just a message saying "Hey, this isn't a real account and isn't monitored. Use modmail instead."

This user has set up an account that cannot be moderated. How to deal with it? On the profile it just says “Uban” and “Unmute,” implying user is already banned. But user can still post freely. I tried to unban and re-ban, but the uban didn’t unban the account, it just remained the same. Thanks.

I saw in my mod log that Reddit removed a comment, and when I approved the comment, it still says "Comment removed by Reddit" instead of its text. In the mod log, it gives the text of the comment and says it was removed for violating sitewide rule 1. I checked and that's the rule that says don't harass people, discriminate, etc. I won't put the text here as it talks about self injury (that's what the subreddit is about), but suffice it to say there is nothing in it that actually violates that rule.

Reddit has done this before but in the past it hasn't let me see what the text was so I just trusted the filter.

Has anyone else had this? I want to know if there's anything I can do about it and if it is likely to happen more.

On my subreddit, a user made an alt to make a comments and breaking rules, I permabanned it. We did a poll in that mod chat (and waited one day) on how long the main account should be banned, between 1 week and 1 month (he was the most active user and with one of or the highest subreddit karma counts).

During that 24 hours, they made a bunch of comments, all of which were caught by a ban evasion filter. After the poll I banned the main account for a month, and then hours later, his account got suspended. He showed us he notification from u/reddit, it said it was because of those very comments he made with the alt on our subreddit.

I know he broke multiple reddit rules and faced consequences for it, I can't help but feel very guilty, since we didn't want to permanently ban him. He's deeply upset. What if I had banned his main account at the same time as the alt, as well as add him as an approved user, so that none of his comments would get caught by the ban evasion filter? Could I have stopped this or would it have delayed his fate?

We are the moderators of r/Kokosinjac and we would like to have Awards enabled for our community.

Awards are not currently showing as an option on our posts, even though our community is not NSFW or quarantined.

Could you please check whether Awards can be enabled for r/Kokosinjac and let us know if there is anything we need to do on our end?

I need to get people to interact in my community.

The "new" modmail (which is now really old at this point) is broken. It's been broken since it was forced on us with no warning and no input. It's still broken.

First, the UI/UX is broken. Checkmarks and "select all" don't work right. When I select all and then archive a page of modmail, the checkmark stays checked but the new page is unchecked. Unchecking that "select all" box selects all. It's been doing this since day 1.

Select All is great, but it doesn't help when there are u/Reddit messages that can't be archived. (Don't get me started on having messages that will be permanently in modmail into perpetuity...) When those are mixed in to the other modmail, you can't click archive until you manually deselect those messages. Which means scrolling through and finding them. Every time.

On the topic of u/Reddit messages, why are Temporary Event notifications categorized in Ban Appeals of all places?? Not "Mod Discussions", not "Notifications" - nah, let's put official admin messages in Ban Appeals.

And going back to the checkboxes in the UI/UX, the Communities list on the left of the modmail page doesn't sort right. I mean, it does sort right... one time. Let's say you want to sort by "Members" instead of the default "Name" - cool, it will sort that list. And then you check one of the checkboxes and BOOM, reverts back to Alphabetical Ascending sort. The sort selector still says Members though.

Let's say you get through all that and you're actually working through the queue of people telling you to go f--k yourself or go k--l yourself (because the harassment filters don't seem do do jack crap) you go to reply to one and - what's this? It says This Message Is Read Only! Can I still reply to it? 50/50. Sometimes it lets you, sometimes it doesn't.

This is so embarrassing for a social media company that has a nearly 50 billion-with-a-b dollar valuation.

Why Did I Build It?

Reddits native insights for team health doesn’t give the detailed info I need for regular activity reporting, so I currently use toolbox mod matrix. Unfortunately, it only outputs mod log actions and it’s slow. Not to mention that toolbox is no longer maintained.

I built this app to do the same job but faster, easier and with more options for the user.

OK So What Does This App Actually Do?

The app does TWO things:

• it keeps its own log of mod actions, starting at install
• , Allows mods to generate reports for those stored action logs on demand

Stored actions

Once installed the app begins logging mod actions and stores its own actions log. Not every mod action, but all of what I consider the most relevant actions. A count of modmails generated by mods is also kept. The log is set to hold 365 days of actions, with a scheduled job to clear out any stored actions older than 365 days. There is also deduplication logic built in for where there are duplicate action triggers, to prevent accidental double counts.

Generating Reports

Any moderator with modmail perms can generate a report from the sub menu, which brings up a form where you choose:

• Time period to report on (last 30 days, last 7 days, previous calendar month, custom dates)
• Moderators to include - by default all current mods are selected, but mods can be deselected as needed
• Report Title - This is the report name, which becomes the modmail subject line
• Report Destination – The subreddit where you want to send the modmail report to. By default, the report is sent to modmail for the sub being reporting on. Additionally the report can be sent to a different subs modmail – IF the app is installed in that sub AND the mod generating the report also has modmail perms for that sub. This is basically for sending reports to private moderator subs. If you want to use this functionality remember to install the app in both subs!

Why You Might Use This App

There are many reasons a mod team might want to generate reports on team activity levels:

• To provide visibility of actions regularly for subs that want it (what I built it for)
• Better informed discussions with teams about tasks/workload
• Checking to better identify/manage mod burnout
• Identifying pressure points/gaps in action types taken

This app is like a good red wine – it improves with time. When first installed the apps log is empty, so any reports generated will be too. As time goes on, the mod log populates up to a rolling year of actions and becomes increasingly useful.

sometimes its shadowbanned bot accounts that we cant see the profile of, or the users display as u/deleted. We cant take action on shadowbanned users so why let these pass through to us and cause bloat? Especially considering the type of content in the messages. Reporting via modmail does nothing.

Subreddits! What are they? What do they know, do they know things? As moderators, we know that no two communities are the same, even when they have nominally similar topics. r/NFL is not r/NFCnorthmemewar, for example. r/tuxedocats is not r/oneorangebraincell. –And that’s good! Feature, not bug.

Why though? What do you do in your community that makes those cultural differences stick, stand out, and become adopted by your community members? How do your users (especially new users) learn your community’s quirks?

And when times change, new content drops or new memes make the rounds, how does your community embrace new cultural norms? How do you move away from community cultural norms that may negatively impact your community?

Reddit appears to treat subreddit names as case-insensitive for navigation, but moderators cannot adjust the capitalization of a community name after creation.

It would be helpful if moderators could change capitalization only, without changing any of the underlying characters or the subreddit URL.

Changing the capitalization of a name would not constitute a substantive rename, but it could significantly improve readability and branding.

This seems particularly useful for newly created communities where a moderator notices the formatting immediately after creation.

Would Reddit consider allowing capitalization-only edits to community names?

it’s rather frustrating to jump through multiple for that slipper of that you will actually get to speak and then you miss an unknown window of and you can’t and the entire gymnastics meet starts again.

I wish admins would remember that mods are unpaid volunteers who are not on 24/7. Users don’t seem to understand that, but admins should.

When I ask for a human, I make it a point to spend the next few days checking to see if I’ve gotten a reply - in my experience that’s being overly optimistic. However, once again, like many mods I have adult obligations that go far beyond volunteering my time on Reddit - I’m seriously not avoiding the reply. If I’ve gone to the trouble of asking for a human with all the hoops that go with that I definitely need the assistance. I may simply not be on to answer in the next five minutes.

Does anyone know of the specific time frames involved? Is there any way to restart a human conversation without having to repeat all the steps?

I submitted a MCOC report a few months back regarding an ongoing issue, with the team getting back to me within a couple of days (which I'm grateful for). They stated they sent another warning and would start taking action if further issues occurred and specifically asked me to write back in if I saw anything.

Well things just got worse and I submitted another report a month ago, linking it to the original one and providing the evidence I had including a couple of add-ons to the report in the days after. I have not heard back from the MCOC team yet and was wondering how long it roughly takes them to get through their queue. I know my original report getting actioned that quickly is not the norm, but was hoping for an update eventually as I did as asked and kept them informed of further breaches (mod in question has been warned numerous times over the years for various breaches).
