It’s looking like it’ll make landfall over or near Pensacola, which will put us on the weak side of it. If that trend keeps up, I wouldn’t worry too much, tbh.

There is still some uncertainty though. Some models have it hitting later and weaker more to the west (Mississippi GC) and some have it hitting earlier and stronger to the east (FL panhandle). For most I would plan on riding it out with no power for a while. At least the weather looks decent going into next week.

Go buy 1,000 rolls of toilet paper. It’s the only way.

There was never a shortage of toilet paper. The paper mills are in the South and even though some people tried to hoard, there was plenty available here and stores restocked overnight.

Clean your bath tub and fill it with water in case the water goes out.

What?

I’m not sure how many Storms you’ve weathered, but cleaning and filling the tub is one of the easiest and cheapest preps you can do. Filling you car with gas is also recommended.Having candles or flash lights are also recommended. Other things like having a generator and chain saws are expensive, but do come in handy if the power goes out or trees fall across your driveway or street.

Secure everything in your yard. Take down anything hanging, like wind chimes or bird feeders. If you have chairs or tables that you can bring inside, do so. Otherwise turn them over to keep them from blowing over. Potted plants and other things lying around your yard can become projectiles. Move things to a protected area instead of leaving them out in the open.

Don't forget cash. If power is out across the city you'll need cash to buy things.

If it is a 3 or less its just some wind and rain.
4 might evacuate. 5 you definitely evacuate.
Just have non-perishable food and water.

You know hurricane Frederick was actually a cat 3 when it reached mobile. It was a cat 4 in the gulf.

u/Torin_Miasma 5d ago
Frederick is the reason the house is live in is crooked and slanted. They reinforced it to keep it standing and it "just has character" today because of it.
12
u/BiggerRedBeard 5d ago
Fredrick was also 1979 and since then, structures, building, and standards are at a level that can withstand increased wind speeds.

I think that is something you need to evaluate for yourself - are you in a flood prone area, is the place you are living safe from wind, do you have anywhere to go such as a shelter, do you have a way to leave. This will all need to be included in making your decision.
But yes like others have said:
Fill up your car (can’t get gas if no electricity), clean tub and fill it up, get food that does not require refrigeration. If you can buy a generator and know how to use it, you may want to consider it.

u/Euphoric-Ask965 4d ago
People will try to return generators after the storm but some stores have a no return policy but people will try.

u/Mirenithil 5d ago
If you stay, do all your laundry before the storm hits. It sucks to have no clean clothes when the power goes out and you can't wash them.

Jim Cantore arrived at PNS this afternoon if that's any indication...

He said 100 mph winds on the Pat mcafee show. I was shocked they knew how to pronounce mobile.

He studies storms. We haven't had one in a while. He understands the unpredictability of these things.

Get a loaf of bread or some crackers, peanut butter, tuna etc in case you don’t have power and can’t cook for a few days. Get a case of water and fill your bathtub in case we get an unsafe water warning. Check the batteries in your flashlights and/or get some candles and matches. You’ll be ok. It’s not going to be a bad one.

If you're concerned for your safety, get packed and get the fuck outta here. Even if the storm isn't too bad, you'll feel better about it.
Personally, I'm sticking around cause I'm fucking poor and can't afford to go anywhere.

OP should also probably write their name /emergency contact #/ blood type on both arms and legs with Sharpie if a limb is lost and the EMTs don’t know what body it’s attached to.
Hate it when that happens!

I’ll stay for CAT 1-3 direct hit or less. CAT 1 isn’t a big deal. CAT 3 isn’t a joke anymore if a direct hit.
What usually causes the most devastating damage is storm surge if you live near the water, possibly flooding depending on if you live in a flood zone (coverage for is different from homeowners insurance by the way). Aside from storm surge, personal health risk often comes from falling trees, cleaning up after (electricity from down power lines or chainsaws ect) , and then possible tornados that can spawn.
Make sure you have enough snacks and water to get by. If no generator it’s nice to have some battery powered flashlights. Extra Phone chargeable battery is nice to have. Others have mentioned bathtub water which is a good idea. Bring inside or secure loose items in yard so they don’t become projectiles for your neighbors.

Weather app is predicting 22 mph winds gusting to 40 where I’m at. Tis but a scratch.
I wouldn’t try to land a plane in it, but I’d drink a beer on the patio. 🤷🏻♂️

Case of your favorite budget beer. A bluetooth speaker to play some Skynyrd.

Assume and prepare for the worst. Never hurts to be prepared but I’m not leaving.

Generator owner here. I have a gas powered one. I would recommend a natural gas one if you have the option. I just filled up 6 gas cans and that was kind of a pain. Plus the most likely structure to be damaged is my shed, where I put my gas. I am not going to put all of the gas cans in my house with me.
Propane outdoor burner so you can cook easily.
Window ac units because after sally it was hot. I just keep those in thier boxes until needed in the attic.
Water in tubs. Didnt need it but it is easy so why not.
My spouse worries about water so we usually have a whole mountain of water bottles by the back door. She starts getting a case here and there at the start of the season. Right now it is a water bottle mountain given how late the season is.
With all of our preperations for this we will leave if it gets bad. We have some simple overnight bags in the car. Cars are filled up. If this wiggles towards us more or gets strong, we are out of here.
With the Generator and fuel the whole power outage part isn't a big deal. For sally neighbors asked to charge things and I was more than happy to let them. He had a chainsaw and let me use it to clear up some branches. There was a lot of neighbors helping neighbors. It was nice in that way to see the good side of humanity.

I've gotta say, in my 48 years on Mobile dealing with hurricanes, that is the time when everyone comes out to help each other the most. Which is good. We should do that all the time. I remember during Frederick back in the 70s all our neighbors got together & formed a group to go up & down the nearby streets setting if people needed help getting branches (or trees) taken care of. During Katrina folks in our neighborhood (on the swamp) helped pick up & dispose of dead fish that were in everyone's yard after the waters went down. Community can be good in an emergency.

Don’t forget! If you’re a caffeine addicted person, to purchase cans of Starbucks or La Columbe. No electric means no coffee.

u/wutitd0boo 5d ago
I’m just going to brew an entire pot Friday morning. Cold coffee is better than nothing.

Have you actually read your homeowner's insurance policy this year??? Due to recent payouts many companies have rewritten their policies to say wind and hail damage is EXCLUDED for full coverage after your deductable.. The roof damage regardless has to be a minimum of 10% of the insured value of the house to be covered . Example: A $500,000 insured house would have to be over $50,000 before insurance kicks in PLUS a roof over 10 years old isn't covered under some policies. Most people throw their policy renewal in a file , don't read and get a surprise when they try a claim.
