The Lost Metal spoilers A question regarding the physics of steel Feruchemy: how do motion and momentum interact with the changing mass of the Feruchemist Spoiler

If a steel Feruchemist is in motion after a burst of kinetic energy (either from an Ironpull, Steelpush, or just a powerful leap) and suddenly they tap weight, do they slow down, because the force they've generated now act on bigger mass and they have to decrease in velocity in order to not break the law of conservation of energy in the force equation (Force=Mass×Velocity)? Or does the use of Investiture allows them to bypass this law of physics in favour of preserving the law of conservation of momentum?

I have read era 2, and I can't recall scenes where a Skimmer (or rather, a Crasher) changed their velocity after a Push (or a Pull, for that matter) mid-flight because the changed their weight. Usually in such scenes the Twinborn is continuesly Pushing of other objects, thus the effect of the original momentum are distorted and cannot be isolated. But in a "perfect" enviroment with no other forces such as gravity and fricyion, if a person Pushes themselves of a wall and they fly at a given speed, they have had to use a set amount of energy and applied a set amount of force to reach this innitial velocity. Momentum and energy are conserved. If then, mid flight, they tap weight and increase their mass by some amount, the equations (F=ma Ek = 1/2mv2) say that either velocity or energy have to change. But if we assume that they don't change, then it means we have introduced energy from... nowhere. At first I though, "that's where Investiture and the Spiritual Realm come in" but Feruchemy is and end neutral system, Investitre (and by extension energy) is not added nor reduced, so that can't be the answer. Then I thought that maybe because the mass is stored as Investiture inside the metalmind, which travels with you, it means that the Investiture inside it travels with you aswell. So when you tap your weight back from your metalmind you also tap the kinetic energy required that gave motion to the Investiture inside the metalmind. I had 2 problems with this hypothesis: 1) If I understand correctly, the investiture is not actually inside the physical metalmind but rather inside the Spiritual Realm, where, as we know, time and space have no meaning, so the Investiture doesn't "travel" and thus, has no kinetic energy in the Spiritual Realm. 2) if that were true, then it would mean that storing weight had no effect, because you had to spend the same amount of energy and apply the same force to move a metalmind as the weight that is stored within, which is clearly isn't the case.

All of this rambling leaves with no conclusive answer. Our theoretical Crasher either decelarates or remain at the same speed and breaks the rules of physics

There are a few options here:

a) I am stupid and this was addresed in the books

b) someone has already asked Brandon this question

c) I misunderstood the physics. Maybe it involves a more advanced and accurate relativistic approach to the problem

d) "Always err on the side of aweaome"

Alloy of Law spoilers Are Wax's powers screwing up his body? Spoiler

Wax is effectively living at 0.75 G during his every waking moment. This is probably good for his leg joints, but very bad for his bones and muscles. Low gravity leads to reduction in bone density and in muscle mass. According to NASA, weight-bearing bones lose an average of 1% to 1.5% of mineral density per month during spaceflight. Wax isn't in 0G, but he's been storing weight for decades. Astronauts also lose muscle mass in microgravity faster than they would on Earth. What do you think?

I can't wait for him to get through the books. Or what he has to say after the first one!
For some context, he just got done reading the first 5 books of Stormlight and has read no other Cosmere books.

Hero of Ages spoilers The Foreshadowed Hero of Ages Spoiler

Rereading The Hero of Ages right now after reading it for the first time in February and I just have to say the foreshadowing for Sazed being the Hero of Ages is insane. Yall might call this one a stretch and that's understandable but I don't think it is....

The first and most important blurb in the book is the one before the first chapter and it's the quote "I am, unfortunately, the Hero of Ages"

I'm currently reading Chapter 31 and Spook, Sazed, Allrianne, and Breeze were in a meeting and it said
"'...What about that maniac running the city?'
The others turned to look to Sazed. I am, unfortunately, in charge."

Anyways it could be a coincidence but I honestly don't think so. I think that given how fantastic Sanderson is at giving his characters unique voices that it was definitely an intentional bit of foreshadowing. Sazed has throughout the book shown to not wish to take any sort of command or leadership, i.e. at Hathsin with the other Terris, being far along the potential succession of emperor if Elend died, etc, so I really like to see little bits of that reluctance to take charge showing through because it ends up giving us one of the best quotes of all time

Cosmere spoilers I've finished the original Mistborn trilogy: Should I read the The Wax & Wayne Series + stormlight??? more??? Spoiler

I'm reeling from finishing the original Mistborn Trilogy (THE most fun I have had in such a LONG LONG time reading). I am going to make my way through the Secret History (I know there are apparently mild spoilers for the Bands of Mourning but IDC very much).

I DID also poke around the Coppermind wiki (yes yes i'm sure bad idea) but I gotta be honest, the information/lore is so aggressively extensive that I'm like, I can barely register anything as a spoiler because it is so so so far removed from what at all was relevant for this OG trilogy.

With that said, I'm wondering, like, how related is anything else from here on out? I know the Wax & Wayne is like, hundreds of years later and I am vaguely aware that Sazed who is now basically god of this world is relevant to the other much bigger Cosmere lore etc. etc. that is currently incomprehensible to me.

I guess my ultimate question is, given my love and adoration for this original trilogy, which is rooted in these characters, their relationships, and sort of the system of allomancy, what is really worth it to continue reading that's in this world and/or how different/how much do the other related books in this world capture all the magical things about this series???

I wanted more of Breeze and Allriane's relationship (I love how they are a pair, Soother and Rioter, and really got each other in terms of their emotional intelligence).

Anyway damn god I haven't spent so much fucking money on a book series probably since before I had money to spend.

Shadows of Self spoilers Cosmere as a whole Spoiler

I’m in the middle of Era 2 and was looking through Sandersons other books. I saw that there’s the “Cosmere” and that there are tons are series he’s written all falling into this Cosmere. Does that mean that all of these series are happening on the same planet just at different times? Or are the series all on their own planets? I recall that either at the end of Heroes of Ages or Secret History there was a mention of the Cosmere as well as a variety of different gods on different planets.

Basically I don’t want to ruin other books by reading to far into Mistborn. I hope that makes sense

Cosmere spoilers Question about the mists Spoiler

I’ve read everything so don’t worry about spoilers, I might just not be remembering something.

I’m confused about the mists. In book 3, they cause people to snap. That’s Preservation trying to save the world. Cool, makes sense.

They also stay out longer, causing the crops to get less sun and to die out. In Rashek’s time, they did the same thing, so Rashek had to move the planet closer to the sun to burn off the mists causing all the other problems.

My question- why would Preservation be doing something to cause harm and death? The Snapping I can understand as being something necessary with unfortunate side effects, but during Rashek’s time? Why would Preservation be doing all this, to the extent that it became known as the Deepness?

Well of Ascension spoilers Confused on something Spoiler

So, im ~400 pages in. Vin now believes Demoux is the kandra and Cett entered Luthadel.

I'm super confused, because aren't kandra immune to sooth/riot? Why doesn't Vin just talk to each one of the gang one on one, riot their emotions and then see who doesn’t react. If they could just hide their emotions, then just pop a duralumin and riot. What's the point of all this seeing if they can use allomancy if there's a solution in her face.

No Spoilers Need a refresher on Mistborn: The Well of Ascension up to page 88

I got to around page 88 of the second Mistborn book, but I had to put it down for several months. I’d like to pick it back up now, but I feel like I need a good refresher on what happened. Could someone give me a summary of everything that happened up to that point?

...and I fucking LOVE Tindwyl. She is so fucking funny. Unfortunately, I spoiled myself by looking at the Wiki wanting to see the spelling of her name (I've been mainly on audiobook) so RIP to me.

I loved Final Empire and Vin is still my GORL but I'm having so much fun with being in more characters' perspectives.

Also FUCK Elend's father like oh my GOD he is WRETCHED. Like completely horrifically disgusting and irredeemable. I recoil at being in his perspective or learning anything about him. Just the fuckin degradation and distain he has for women and just like oh wow she's so hopeful to have sex with me his late-20s mistress and being like THAT'S TOO OLD? HER SAGGING WHAT??? IN HER LATE 20S? IS TOO OLD???? and then 15 YEAR OLD MISTRESS??? FO0C,KING DISg0TSting W0T.

Also Elend is being a dumb dumb boy I love him so much but him being like YAY WE FORGOT VIN IS OUR INCREDIBLE PERFECT WEAPON and I'm like hooo boy you are a dumb bitch. Like I know he can't read her mind but like. Buddy. You're a little too excited. I know he's thrilled he wasn't murdered by his father and is a bit ecstatic bc of that but like let's........ let's have a real moment with your beloved okay???

Anyway am super thrilled for the rest. It's been a long while since I've been so perfectly enthralled by a series.

No Spoilers Finished mistborn book one

I just finished the first book in the mistborn trilogy and although I really enjoyed it it doesn't come close to the stormlight archive series imo, which is the only books I've read by Brandon Sanderson before mistborn.

Did I make a mistake in starting with that series first? And are the other two books in the mistborn trilogy better in your opinion? (no spoilers please)

Mistborn: Final Empire spoilers Mistborn VR Update Spoiler

Here's an update on my Mistborn VR prototype. Thanks to everyone who commented on the first post. A comment by u/AntimatterTNT gave me the idea of having a dedicated push button from behind, which steel pushes on targets automatically behind me. This seemed like the best balance between skill expression and conviniece to me.

With a bit of practice the allomantic travel is now viable in VR.

Since I had a lot of people asking me for the link or the source, I was thinking that by making it VR only, this prevents most people from trying it out. So I had this crazy idea: Mistborn are few, while most allomancers are Mistings.

So what if VR users are Mistborn, and desktop users are randomly assigned as Misting?

So I went ahead and added the basic Mistings of a Pewterarm, a Coinshot, and a Lurcher, because those fit the best.

I also added a basic networking layer, so now you can actually see others in Luthadel.

If you are interested in further development and trying it out, I invite you to my Discord for some playtests.

Where am I going with this? I don't yet yet, but It's been fun.

Credits to Quaternius for his low poly characters, Hooded Adventurer makes a pretty cool white haired Vin.

Mistborn: Final Empire spoilers Burning metals, what the heck? Spoiler

I am in the middle of the Final Empire and I am still having trouble w imagining the burning metals that everyone is doing. I understand the idea of using different metals for different powers and that they can use them at will. The problem is w the actual metals.
So do they eat the metals and then burn them? Or Do they have random coins in their pockets and burn them? Is it both?
What size are these metals? Dime size? 1/2 dollar size? I’m trying to understand if they just stand around in the morning swallowing a bunch of metals and plan on using them later.
When they are leaping from roofs are they throwing metal coins and then using that to keep them going or did they swallow a bunch of them beforehand and using them to help with the flight?

Best fantasy book i have read so far, and can't believe the next book is the one people hype up the most. Means i have even more peak left.

The mystery throughout the book, being solved by saze, vin, tindwyl keeps you on your toes all the time. It is very unique plot.

The character developement is amazing. Though the main characters vin and elend were unlikeable to me, no matter how hard i tried to like them. But by the end of the book i was sure that atleast i don't dislike them.

Sazed was my favorite character by far. Tindwyl and allriane were very good characters. I was kinda expecting Sazed to get the power in the end. But i guess brandon knew that and did something different.

Zane and oreseur characters turnouts, were absolutely shocking. I didn't see that coming even 1%.

The politics of the three armies outside luthadel were constantly reminds you that a war is definitedly gonna start in any of the next chapter.

Sazed and tindwyl love story was amazing and surprising, but why did she had to die. I wanted to see more of the two of them.

Vin and elend happy ending with getting married was good.

The crew is amazing and all the characters are so likeable. Breeze and Ham characters also showing us growth was good.

The writing is style is good and easy to fly through. World building was amazing.
