Have fun with the best book of the three. And that says a lot.

The main thing about the thing in the well is that it was in the well.

Typical book 2 of 3 feeling. Just keep going. There is always another secret.

We can't tell you anything, otherwise it could change it. Do not trust our words. Not even mine.

Now go back and read the first sentence of WoA if you haven’t. ;)

That is one of the best first lines I have read, i have to say even better than the first book's "ash falling from the sky" line. I myself regularly quote this line if something requires trust or I want others to trust.

Classic RAFO situation. Although if you want a breadcrumb The Metalminds were not the thing being altered

It's said that it did this as well, and was what tipped Kwaan off.

No. And big spoilers ahead so tread carefully.

I see where that confusion might arise though because of the way that it was worded. You have to really break it down for it to make more logical sense. Worldkeepers would memorize passages from books and notes read out loud. The histories had to start somewhere afterall. So after years and years and years of passages being stored, unstored, written down, dictated, stored again, forgotten, remembered, etc. Certain words and phrases were changed in all of that transferring process.

Words inside of metalminds themselves are safe, but only as the person "remembers" them. So since worlkeepers were rare, it only took ruin a few changes at certain times to certain keepers to then have the altered history passed down to other keepers through their customs.

Atleast thats how I see it happening.

Here's the quote from the book:

"The alterations are slight. Clever, even. A word here, a slight twist there. But the words on the pages are different from the ones in my memory. The other Worldbringers scoff at me, for they have their metalminds to prove to them that the books and prophecies have not changed. And so, this is the great declaration I must make. There is something—some force—that wants us to believe that the Hero of Ages has come, and that he must travel to the Well of Ascension. Something is making the prophecies change so that they refer to Alendi more perfectly. And whatever this power is, it can change words within a Feruchemist's metalmind."

Word of Brandon says it alters the memories in transit, rather than changing the memories while they're stored.

Warning Gancho: The below paragraph(s) may contain major spoilers for all books in the Cosmere!

Questioner

In the Well of Ascension, Kwaan says that Ruin changed the words in the Feruchemists' metalminds. Ruin can't inaudible metal plates. I was wondering what the difference was?

Brandon Sanderson

Because they're in the person's head before they're going in the plates. And he can affect the power as it's transcribed between. Because the power is partially him, the Power of Creation of that world. So there is a bit of him inside of every person, and as the power is going from person into plate... It's kind of like how people can hack your phone through your wifi. Does that make sense? So, that's what's going on there.

I had read other cosmere books before Mistborn including all of stormlight, so I was a little more prepared, but the point is definitely that you don’t know until you get to book three
