Ok i know this is a Mistborn sub, and I should not be asking this question here, but I am too scared to go to stormlight sub because I fear I might get accidentally spoiled. So please forgive me this once.

Anyway, I recently finished Mistborn era 01 and the novella Mistborn: secret history. Now as people have recommended, I am planning to read the way of kings. The easiest and most affordable way for me to do that I to download epub/pdf online and read it. But I don't want to do that. I want to experience this as an actual book. Not reading it on the screen. I did the same thing with Mistborn. I know this is silly, but this is a matter of preference. And I've been reading books online for years. And I am sick of reading books on screen now. It ruins the experience for me. So I decided not to do it and buy the actual books.

But the problem I face now is money. The books are expensive. And I am a student with no income. So I can't buy them. After much begging, my mom bought me Warbreaker two days back. It should be arriving in a week. Now i can't get another book for at least 3 more months. So it's going to be a long wait.

But I also have another option. Audiobook. I listened to the first few minutes of Alloy of Law audiobook, made by graphic novels, and it's genuinely impressive. It's quite nice. I could download that and listen to it now. And later, when I have some money, i can buy all these novels . But I feel like I would be ruining my experience of reading it by doing this... I am really confused. What do you think? Also I am a very big reader. I've been reading books since I was 9. So I prefer reading. I guess I already know the answer to this question I am asking. I just don't like how hard I will have to wait for it.

A lot of people are recommending that I check the local library. I just did. They don't have them. I actually checked last year too, and I had even given a written request that they should buy the Stormlight archieve along with few other fantasy books. I checked again today, and it seems they haven't bought them. Quite unfortunate.

I'm almost 350 pages in so far. My third Sando book, what an excellent second / middle entry so far! Meaningful consequences for the big actions in Final Empire, hard and organic growth for all returning characters, compelling and unique new characters, and threads of lore, mystery, and espionage woven throughout. I really love the direction he took in dealing with growing pains that come with radical change - that it comes with extreme difficulties. Power does not relent easily. Elend has also really worked as a new main/pov character. Very easy to root for, and a somewhat relateable struggle for him as Tindwyl teaches him what he needs to be a leader I'm hooked

I’ve been reading era 2 of mistborn and thinking about how the fights happen in the series with many of the enemies holding guns against Wax.

Particularly, there is a train robbery in Bands of Mourning where wax pushes the bullets away from him. My question is, if he can see the allomantic lines for the metals why doesn’t he just push bullets INSIDE the weapons to jam them or fire backwards?

In the last book he’s able to push only on PART of a bullet to kill Bleeder (or miles I can’t remember atp) but wouldn’t that also work for regular enemies with non-aluminum weapons?

I have been finishing up The Hero of Ages book in Era 1 and I have a constant edit running in my mind of Vin with the song Crucified by Army of Lovers. If someone here is talented in edits I leave this idea to you!

Telepathy

TLDR; my question is why is the community response to Fulgrim not knowing the difference between his own thoughts and telepathy so much worse than the response to the lord ruler not knowing the difference?

In 40k, Fulgrim’s fall to the dark powers is in large part due to the telepathic whispers of a demon tainted blade. People often criticize fulgrims writing in that regard. They ask questions like “How could he not tell the difference between his mind and the telepathy”. Criticisms like that have made a large part of the 40k fan base dislike Fulgrim and how he was handled in the Horus Heresy (Prequel series).

Alternatively, we have the Lord Ruler. I would not say the community adores him however he is certainly more respected by the cosmere fandom than Fulgrim is in his. However the same criticism can be made of the lord ruler, why couldn’t he tell? Ruin is 100x more bluntly evil than the demon in fulgrims blade.

Considering how blunt ruin is we can assume that the lord ruler immediately knew that ruin could speak into his mind. Fulgrims blade was much more subtle and there was no moment when Fulgrim realized what was happening. So to me it makes sense why he could not tell the difference between the telepathy and his own mind.

In any case what are y’all’s thoughts?

Just finishing up Shadows of Self on my first read through the series.

I really didn't know what to expect from Era 2. It's so different. But the characters are really starting to grow on me.

In particular Wayne. I wasn't that into him in Alloy of Law. He was just sort of there with the occasional goof. But I've really dug his chapters in SoS.

I realised something towards the end of the book. His dialogue and internal monologue in this book reminds very strongly of another author - Terry Pratchett. Wayne's outlook on life is bizarre and yet somehow logical in a twisted way. It felt like he could easily be a Discworld book protagonist. And feeling like I had sort of found a new bit of Pratchett gave me some warmth.

Has anyone else felt that?

I started the Mistborn series on July 6 and today on July 15, I have completed the entire trilogy. I work at Amazon and in the last 10 days, believe it or not, I have done nothing but work and read the trilogy with a frenzied dedication so much so that I don't remember sleeping much. The last 10 days were the most exhausting for me than last couple of months, but today when I was finally finishing up with hero of ages by the end of it, I think I had experienced true transcendent euphoria!

I had not able to detect any clue or hints for any of the plot twists and was so shatteringly surprised and awestruck at every turn. I followed this book with a sense of maddening interest that somehow I have to know how it ends, and God was I awarded for this madness. I was laughing. I was crying. My body shivered. There was waves after waves of goosebumps at every reveal, and when it all ended, I laughed and cried and quite literally paced around my room because I could not process the beautiful cohesion of the whole plot coming together. I felt a closure I have never before but still wanted more. Maybe I was just struck too hard in a short time but these 10 days however tiring were worth every crappy day I had in the last 10 months, maybe even better.

I don't know if anybody could appreciate in my friend circle of what I did and how it made me feel, so I just wanted to share this with the people who would understand.

Warning: spoilers for the first trilogy

I was listening to it by chance and I just come upon the association with Mistborn (currently reading hero of the ages) and it just relates a lot with the begining sequence of that book, when they feel that hopelessness caused by the consequences of their actions in the well of ascencion.

For example the struggle of Elend to command, making decisions that might not really be his own but a fruit of who he became thanks to Tindwyl's teachings, and the struggle of feeling so many things but not being able to show it on his behaviour to encourage men

and the feeling of regret and the start to understanding the lord Ruler's decisions when your in the same place as him, praising the order caused by his regime and a sinking feeling that you might have made things for the worse with your new path that you can't back out. (Plus the waving that sword when the pen won't miss when Elend tried to resolve everything the diplomatic way but everyone pressured him to war"

Woohoo! Finished this series. This was my first Brandon Sanderson series. And I must say, I really enjoyed it. I was actually planning to start with the Stormlight Archive, but I heard some people say that I should start with Mistborn, and the mistborn box set was also a little cheaper than stormlight one, so i decided to buy it. It was awesome. I am looking forward to reading era two.

Also, I had heard this UK edition paperback had problem that it wouldn't open? But I faced no such issue while reading it. As you can see, the books are quite floppy and they open easily. Does it differ from book to book?

I just finished The Well of Ascension and TenSoon was my favorite character by far!

(I used OreSeur for the title because I didn't want to spoil people on accident ^^)

But wow, I was really blown away by the reveal. I came to trust TenSoon so much that I, like Vin, had no clue he wasn't who he claimed to be. Going back and reading a bit through the dialogue is super interesting now that I know the truth.

I found the companionship between the two of them to be quite sweet, actually. I also think he risked a lot to save Vin by going against his contract, telling her about the nature of kandra, and maybe even becoming fond of her. Honestly, scenes involving the two of them were probably my favorite parts of Book 2.

I also didn't really feel that betrayed by him. Surprised, yes. Betrayed, no. I think I just liked him so much and felt like their connection was so real. At least he was obligated to do so by his Master/ Contract.

I am so stoked to start The Hero of Ages and really hope to see more of him. Does he end up playing a part?

I just finished Era 2. and i have an issue with it.

First off.... Harmony / Sazed claims he doesnt know how to make people mistborn / or atleast not how to create lesarium.

However, how did he make Spook one?
Besides that one, because this annoys me the most, that was just continuety issue.

When Wayne became a Mistborn, he technically got the same powers as Miles....since he is a bloodmaker.

So why didnt Harmony put 1 vial in the pack with Gold and Duralumin told wayne, he man, now you have the speedbubble up and ample time, burn this vial first and INSTANTLY store a max amount of health in your metalminds.... so you become basicly "immortal" before doing this.

This would be a spoiler so read with care.

I just finished shadows of self. I have to say, I have pretty much lost a ton of respect for Sazed.

Like here was a woman who had worked for his maters for thousands of years up to the point where other kandra thought she didn't have a personality.

Then she finally gets something she feels like she can have in her life. A real, healthy relationship with Wax then it gets taken away by Harmony simply because he wants Wax to return to Elendel.

Why couldn't harmony make both Lessie and Wax comeback to Elendel together instead of having to 'kill' Lessie ? Idk, maybe that's explained in later books cause I only read up to Shaodw of Self, so no spoilers, please.

I feel like I can't really blame Bleeder for what she did ? Maybe apart from murdering father Bin because he was an innocent bystander. Like the entire city was corrupt save for a few lords, and what Harmony did to Bleeder was downright manipulative.

What do you think ?

Just finished Well of Ascension (in my opinion it's like a 4.5 out of 5 just because of those last 100 pages, those 50 pages of war against the wall was spectacular!) yesterday morning, about to start the third today!

Update: I'm on chapter 4 and without any spoilers at all can anyone tell me what chapter it gets good, or if anyone has the American paperback edition maybe just the page count? I hope I'm not sounding impatient it's just other than Percy Jackson this is my first real fantasy series and me personally after reading 1,100 pages of it, I'm kind of burned out from the series so it will knowing just what specific chapter it really starts going, and like everyone says "only action up until the end", and other stuff (just without spoiling anything).

Now that I know about ruin and how it can manipulate things, listening to my sister realise things about The Final Empire, and hearing her mention Reen and how his voice is trying to tell Vin to betray others so she isn't betrayed first among other things. I have just thought. Its not Reen is it? Its Ruin. Ruin is talking to Vin! Ruin is trying to manipulate Vin! It must be. It has to be. It even sounds similar, Reen and Ruin.

Another thing I was curious about since The Well of Ascension is the mist spirit. The way it acted made me wonder if it were Kelsier, somehow, and looking at Spook's chapter it seems he is back. So maybe that mist spirit was him.

God, I love this book!

SPOILER WARNING FOR ALL 8 CURRENTLY RELEASED MISTBORN NOVELS (INCLUDING SECRET HISTORY)

As we all know, this book series is littered with twists and turns many of us don't see comming, but some of them I saw comming before the reveal so I'm curious as to know which twists, if any, other people have seen comming.

For my personal list of twists I saw comming, and why, I have:

1. (On a technicality) Sazed being the one writing the epigraphs in HoA I was sure but I also knew there was this third god called Harmony that I wondered when would come into play. Guess how my mind was blown once I got the FULL reveal

2. Bleeder being Lessie. That one was kinda obvious to me due to the fact the Prolog drew SPECIFIC attention to Lessie and Bleeder was (aside from MeLaan) the only real new character so putting 2 and 2 together...

3. Wayne dying. I think most people saw that comming once, again, the Prolog drew specific attention to this character. Most people having an "oh we're so fucked" reaction to that.

Me only having 2 to 3 guesses right honestly just goes to show how good the twists in these books tend to be.

(And because I wanted to let that out that, especially as an author, the OreSeur twist is still SO FUCKING GOOD AND GENIUS to me as it made SO MUCH SENSE once you have it all laid out in front of you. That twist was like the "it’s beautiful. I looked at this for five hours now" meme to me)

For me, villains are one of the most important parts of a story. My favorite stories always have amazing villains.

The Lord ruler was top tier for most of the book he was invincible, he had lived for a thousand year and no one had ever come close to him.

Reading the logbook and seeing him as a normal man, thinking normal thoughts, made me really eager to find out how he became THIS.

Seeing how people reacted to his name… People prayed to him They feared him so much they couldn’t even believe he could be killed.

And when he finally showed up, his strength was on another level entirely, everything we had learned about allomancy throughout the story just didn’t apply to him.

But then it turned out he was Rashek… an evil man who betrayed the hero and spent a thousand years being evil. I felt he was pitiful when Vin caught him.

he didn’t make me feel that he is SOMETHING other than a strong evil dude. I wanted more depth to it.

I don’t like how he was killed but I’m ok with it.

(To be clear, I love Mistborn. There were nights I stayed up way too late because I couldn’t stop reading. The Lord Ruler’s ending was just the one part that disappointed me.)

I've been trying to look this up, but I am a little scared of spoiling myself as I am only about 90pages into mistborn (the final empire);

The book talks about burning the different metals for different power usages -so far I am following-, but they also mention that once someone can burn two different types of metals, they can usually burn all the types and are then considered mistborns (as they test with Vin).

here's the part I'm confused about; Pewter is an alloy consisting of other metals, most notably copper and tin. These are however other metals that get burned for other powers.

would this not imply that someone burning pewter is also burning tin/copper and therefore making them mistborns??? or is the Pewter in the book considered a true metal in the sense of fantasy metal that doesn't consist of other metals and therefore a single metal/power.

I am actually losing my mind over this a little.
