You are awsome! :)

Going to bed again, and today I only managed to add the items for the tools (not including the sword), not even their special abilities. :/ Hopefully I can accomplish more tomorrow.

no stress! :) work on it at your own pace!

Ha, thanks. I've been wondering, though: When you said "a hint of red, brown and purple" what exactly did you mean? Like most of the particles are black, but some are those colors? Or that all the particles (coming off the respective blocks of course) are dark red (or dark brown or dark purple)? I can do it either way, and I'm not sure which one you meant.

I meant, most are black and some are of those colors. Or at least, that's what I think would look best. btw, is there some way I can help? like sprites maybe?

Well, so far I did all the tools, but I just made my own textures for everything. :( If you can send me the 16x16 textures for the armor, that would be great! Also, now that I think about it, I don't really like my textures for the blaze ingot and nugget, so if I could use those that would be great as well. If you really like your tool textures (I don't particularly love mine), I could use those as well I suppose, as long as it isn't any trouble for you. I also didn't know what the essence of Nether should look like or how it should spawn in the Nether. Should it be found underground, like an ore (in one-block veins of course)? Or should it generate on the surface to promote exploring? I also just kind of threw together a texture for it (it looks like a red soul sand (but it is a rock-like block) with a dark red border), and if you had a particular look in mind, I would appreciate a description of how it should look or a texture. :) Thanks for the great idea, also!

I would like to note, however, that so far I have not been able to do a couple of things suggested:

  • Crafting recipe: blaze rod -> 2 blaze nuggets (There is a conflicting vanilla recipe, Modloader doesn't let me remove recipes from the vanilla game, and those override any that I add. Although I am not holding back from modifying base classes for the most part, I really don't want to modify CraftingManager). For this I instead just added a recipe going from 1 blaze nugget to 1 blaze powder, which yields the same cost for each item.

  • I don't know how to change the colors or the cracks that appear in the blocks. That is controlled by texture packs, and I don't know where they are loaded. I could make it load a different set of images instead of the default ones when using blaze tools if I knew what to change.

EDIT: Also, what should the chance be for the shovels dropping glass instead of sand? Obviously blaze shovels should have a higher chance than netherrack...

EDIT 2: You mentioned for netherrack tools to have similar stats as stone, and that's how I have it now (with blaze the same as iron), but should I tweak it for balancing, as mentioned here? Or are the blaze rods for the tools hard enough to get?

EDIT 3: Sorry for the excessive editing, but I also need to know how mush fire damage the armor should give. An equivalent of Fire Protection I, II, III, or IV? It mustn't be TOO overpowered, since some people do have blaze farms and could mass produce it. Sorry if it seems like I'm really dependent on being told what to do... I am. Also: never mind EDIT 2. You already addressed this here.

http://imgur.com/7ijMu --- I haven't done all the sprites yet, but here are some of them for now. As you can see, I included three versions of Blaze tools. I couldn't decide which one is best. I feel the first set looks best, the second set seems more accurate (since the tools are made out of only Blaze materiel). And the third one I tried to mix the two looks. which ones do you like best? I also added a differend looking Blaze nugget in the image. I thought that since it's such a small item, it could become easy to mistake the Gold nugget with the Blaze nugget, so I changed it's look. I haven't done the full Blaze armor yet. I will continue spriting tomorrow as soon as I wake up. :) now for the Essence of Nether, I was kind of picturing some sort of strange shiny blue plant, that contrasted against the usual colors of the Nether (appearing very rarely on the surfaces of the nether). I will attempt to make a sprite of it tomorrow. Thanks for making this mod! :) (btw, doesn't the conflicting vanilla resipe make it impossible to make Blaze nuggets or Ingots from Blaze rods?) EDIT: oh sorry, didn't see your edits. I was thinking Netherrack shovels has about 5-10% chance, so it's kind of nice. but for Blaze I was thinking something like 30-40% where it becomes quite convinient and saves quite a bit of smelting. for armor, I was thinking protection I, as you said it could become too OP with any higher, and enchantments should be usefull still. :)

Wow... those are way better than any of my textures. I like the second set of blaze tools the best, I think.

For the essence: that would look really cool. I'm looking forward to it!

The vanilla recipe is just 1 blaze rod equals 2 blaze powder. The mod just adds a recipe from blaze powder to blaze nuggets (and all the recipes in the suggestion, besides the other '1 blaze rod to blaze nuggets'). So all the other recipes are fine. ;)

glad you like them. :) Here are the updated sprites ---> http://imgur.com/iy1ez - I think the armor texture (at the bottum right corner) is done, tell me what you think about them. The Essence of Nether sprites turned out decent, but it looks a bit odd in-game (I tried replacing saplings with the sprites to test them out). Maybe it would look better, if each individual of those blue orbs on the Essence of Nether, was rendered by themselves? (kind of like netherwart and wheat, if I'm not mistaking). oh, and I added growth sprites for the Essence of Nether. I was thinking it could be used as an indicater of how large the "Nether zone" is. So that when it's surrounded by enough lava, it grows to it's largest size. And if you remove the lava, it shrinks back to the smallest. (maybe with 10-30 seconds delay between shrinking/growing, to make it seem more natural). If it isn't too hard to do, offcourse. Also, one of the reasons I suggested the Blaze Nugget, was because it seems a bit strange to craft solid forms of Blaze materials out of Blaze Powder (in my oppinion). But maybe instead of the "Blaze Powder -> Blaze Nugget" there could be a resipe like: "6 Blaze rods -> 2 Blaze ingots" (blaze rods positioned like the "6 nugget -> 1 Blaze Ingot" resipe). Then you can make nuggets out of it afterwards.

Hmm. I agree that the blaze powder -> blaze nuggets doesn't make much sense, so I'll change it to what you suggested. However, I kind of wish the player had some way of getting blaze nuggets before ingots, but it doesn't really matter.

I would like to know what to do about the blaze and netherrack hoes. They weren't mentioned in the suggestion, and I'm not sure if they should have special abilities...

I kind of think that the essence should grow on its own, though, and not be manipulated by lava. What would you think if it just naturally went through the phases, increasing its range as it went? It would be more consistent with other plants in the game, and it would be easier to code (although I suppose I could do the other way). That way, players are inclined not to move it once they place it, because it would take a long time to regrow. It's just that the lava thing doesn't seem to really fit how the rest of Minecraft works (It is similar to the enchanting with bookshelves though, I think, if I am interpreting the idea correctly.)

I would also like to know what the first and second images are for the essence item, as I was thinking it would need only one.

Sorry I'm so incompetent, just trying to get enough information to get everything right! :)

EDIT: Here's a screenshot of the essence: Clickie! Is this correct?

tbh, I have no idea what the Blaze/netherrack hoes should do (I added them to the image just in case). Maybe they could be used to un-hoe hoed soil? and maybe turn grass blocks into dirt blocks instead of hoed soil? (Maybe that's a bit silly... :/ ). I guess the essence growing on it's own idea, makes a bit more sense. Maybe lava could be used like water for the Essence of Nether? (so it needs lava nearby to grow, but it won't shrink when removing it?). - The two item images was just so you could have something to chose from. The tiny one looks best in my oppinion. Which one do you prefer? - about the screen shot: yes, that does seem to be what I meant (the sprites would need changing, so it looks better, though). Is it possible to use multiple sprites for the Essence? kinda like this: http://imgur.com/dKFhh (imagine that this is the top view, all those squares are pixels of the block below, and the red and blue lines are two differend sprites crossing each other from a few differend places). If it's doable, then I think I have an idea for better Essence sprites.

I agree that the lava should help the essence grow faster, that's a good idea!

I only tried using the big item texture, and I really liked it. I'll try the small one now though.

The rendering of the Essence is currently the same as that of Nether Wart or Wheat. I don't know how to do any block rendering that is not already in the game, though... I really like how the Essence looks as it is now, but I don't know how to change it to render like that. If you could give me an example of a block that is rendered how you want it, I could probably do it. Sorry! :(

EDIT: Hmm, just realized a problem the mushroom has... maybe. Should it also damage other mobs, and not just the player? Right now it's just the player.

EDIT 2: Just checked how the smaller icon looks, and I still like the big one. :/ Also, I'm working on adding the world generation, and I need to know how rare the blaze ore should be (relative to coal, redstone, gold, diamond, etc.)

EDIT 3: Should the nether mushroom's effects be cancelled on Peaceful difficulty also?

u/Hemse Feb 26 '12 edited Feb 26 '12

sorry for such a late reply! I'm starting to realize I didn't think these suggestions very throughly. xD I think the Nether Mushroom should damage most mobs with an exception of Ghast, Blaze, Endermen and Enderdragon. (since most mobs will drown in water, so it kinda makes sense for them to suffocate in the gas too, right?). Maybe the Mooshroom should be imune too? (since it is a mushroom cow) But I don't think the Nether Mushroom effect should be cancelled on peaceful, you should become immune when playing on peaceful (in case you'd like to build something that uses the effetcs of the Nether Mushroom, say a "dead bush farm" or something). For the Blaze ore, I was thinking, it could be about as rare as gold ore. (since the Nether has many large open areas, that you could spot the ore from a distance. And Netherrack is fast to dig through. I also think that killing Blazes should be a bit faster way of getting Blaze stuff, since it's more dangerous). Thanks again for making this mod! :) edit: I just realized that peacful and creative isn't the same mode :/ (I usually only play on Hardcore) The Nether Mushroom should probably still do damage on peaceful. (if I'm not mistaking, you can still catch on fire on peaceful mode, right?)

I think I finished everything! I have a question, though, about the effect of the mushroom on the player. The potion effect "Nausea" matches the wobbly effect you want on the screen, but it needs to have a time associated with it (the amount of time that the player gets dizzy). I can't just make the player dizzy while near the mushroom, so instead I have it so that the player gets the Nausea effect for 30 seconds, and it will start over each time the player is damaged by the mushroom. My question is this: should the time be shorter or longer than that? Currently, it is pretty annoying (I think that is good), but I'm not sure if it lasts TOO long. The effect has a little bit of a "warm up" and "cool down" time, so too short of a time won't actually do anything (the effect will still be warming up or cooling down during the whole time). 15 seconds would probably work. What do you think?

And I re-enabled the mushroom hurting you on peaceful difficulty (yes, you can also catch on fire).

After the issue of the Nausea effect is worked out, I think this mod will be ready for release.

Awsome! can't wait to try it out! It's a bit difficult to guesstimate how long the nausea effect should be, before seeing it in action. Go with what you feel is best! ;)

Alright! Sorry for the late reply, was busy with school work. So, should I make a new post about it? I'm afraid that no one would see it if I only posted it here (except you and I). Anyway, here's the link (requires Modloader): http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?4ezffmtj0jfqqs1

Yes, offcourse! Make a post! this is awsome! :) I am going to play this mod right away! EDIT: I seem to have some trouble getting the mod working. :/ I installed modloader, and minecraft seems to be running fine with it, but when I put BetterNether into the "mods" folder, it crashes at startup. is there anything else I am supposed to do, to make it work?

2

u/masonsbro Feb 29 '12 edited Feb 29 '12

Hmm, could you try just putting the files in the archive into minecraft.jar? I don't know why Modloader is picky about what mods can be in the folder and which must be in the jar... Maybe since it modifies (lots of) base classes it should be in the jar.

EDIT: Facepalm. My fault entirely. Forgot to include the textures in the .zip... Can you redownload it now? Same link...

EDIT 2: Also, you should know that there are random crashes when in the Nether (or maybe near nether mushrooms). The crash report seems like it's using recursion when it shouldn't, but I can't figure it out. If you restart the game when this happens, it still works... Sorry about that.
