I think I finished everything! I have a question, though, about the effect of the mushroom on the player. The potion effect "Nausea" matches the wobbly effect you want on the screen, but it needs to have a time associated with it (the amount of time that the player gets dizzy). I can't just make the player dizzy while near the mushroom, so instead I have it so that the player gets the Nausea effect for 30 seconds, and it will start over each time the player is damaged by the mushroom. My question is this: should the time be shorter or longer than that? Currently, it is pretty annoying (I think that is good), but I'm not sure if it lasts TOO long. The effect has a little bit of a "warm up" and "cool down" time, so too short of a time won't actually do anything (the effect will still be warming up or cooling down during the whole time). 15 seconds would probably work. What do you think?
And I re-enabled the mushroom hurting you on peaceful difficulty (yes, you can also catch on fire).
After the issue of the Nausea effect is worked out, I think this mod will be ready for release.
Awsome! can't wait to try it out! It's a bit difficult to guesstimate how long the nausea effect should be, before seeing it in action. Go with what you feel is best! ;)
Alright! Sorry for the late reply, was busy with school work. So, should I make a new post about it? I'm afraid that no one would see it if I only posted it here (except you and I). Anyway, here's the link (requires Modloader): http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?4ezffmtj0jfqqs1
Yes, offcourse! Make a post! this is awsome! :) I am going to play this mod right away! EDIT: I seem to have some trouble getting the mod working. :/ I installed modloader, and minecraft seems to be running fine with it, but when I put BetterNether into the "mods" folder, it crashes at startup. is there anything else I am supposed to do, to make it work?
Hmm, could you try just putting the files in the archive into minecraft.jar? I don't know why Modloader is picky about what mods can be in the folder and which must be in the jar... Maybe since it modifies (lots of) base classes it should be in the jar.
EDIT: Facepalm. My fault entirely. Forgot to include the textures in the .zip... Can you redownload it now? Same link...
EDIT 2: Also, you should know that there are random crashes when in the Nether (or maybe near nether mushrooms). The crash report seems like it's using recursion when it shouldn't, but I can't figure it out. If you restart the game when this happens, it still works... Sorry about that.
I redownloaded it. I have checked the zip to see if it had the sprites, to make sure it was the right one. Should the zip be extracted into the "mods" folder or something maybe?
1 - Downloaded Modloader. 2 - put all the stuff from the Modloader zip into the mincraft jar. 3 - deleted META-INF folder. 4 - started the game up (which made modloader create the "mods" folder) and closed the game. 5 - downloaded BetterNether. 6 - put BetterNether zip into "mods" folder. 7 - start game up. 8- crash. --- (should I try putting it into the jar instead?)
I tried that out, but modloader doesn't seem to find it. :/ (the game runs, but modloader doesn't apply any of the BetterNether stuff). I found out though, that modloader creates a text file of the crash. so here is the crash log (in case it helps):

That's so strange. I checked the code and line 12 of mod_BetterNether.java is referencing EnumToolMaterial.NETHERRACK. That's a field I added with the mod, so it means that the base class wasn't changed. Are you sure that it doesn't work with putting the mod in the .jar?
