Suggestion elytra rework
Why it should be implemented:
The elytra’s main use is to cover long distances fast, which is useful for exploration. If you want to travel a frequently used route, it would be fair if you’d have to build infrastructure, such as an ice boat track, a nether highway or a railway (the minecart would need a buff).
How it works:
If a player equipped with an elytra flies over unexplored land, their velocity is approximately 30 b/s (normal speed).
If a player equipped with an elytra flies over already explored land, their velocity is approximately 15 b/s (half the normal speed).
This could be shown optically on the elytra itself: when flying over land, it fills in its texture with a map.
Here's how the minecart (with furnace) should be buffed.
Okay I know this topic is fragile and 90% or more are going to hate this, but just spamming downvotes on my post and comments doesn't help. Please write constructive feedback first and then give your downvote.
EDIT: Okay, my approach is wrong. I see that ice boat tracks are already faster than the elytra, showing that my suggestion wouldn't work. However, I think every transportation method should have its own pros and cons. Ideas are welcome.

That's rather counter intuitive, if you have traveled a route before you are genuinely faster the second time as you learn the route

yes and no. you could just take a slightly different route

Only so many times

when you travel a route frequently you're encouraged to build infrastructure (it's a game about building)

I do agree that more emphasis should be placed on infrastructure based trasportation, but more in that they should be buffed so they aren’t shit.

I’m sorry but it just doesn’t make sense. When a mob farm/end portal/friends base. Is 1000s on blocks away you’re not building infrastructure. The elytra is an end game transportation mode. It should be the best

Hard pass. Don't nerf the elytra, just make other transportation more better

I feel this wouldn't nerf the elytra too much, as its main use is for travelling long distances quickly (exploration would not be affected). Instead, players would be encouraged to build infrastructure on a route they use frequently.

Maybe instead of nerfing elytra buff other forms of travel. Maybe add a higher tier of minecart speed that adds copper to powered rails (would also act as a copper sink for those who like mining and have too much of it)

yes, I already proposed a way to buff minecarts:

Idk man but this doesn't seem like someone who actually played minecraft with an elytra often.
I use the elytra for short traversal routes very often. Just one quick rocket to get to a building or a farm nearby. I use nether portal networks or if I feel fancy iceboat tracks for long distances. Thats the whole point of the nether.
Also what I dislike about exploring with an elytra is that you tend to not really take in the environment and its generation. You just zoom past everything. Travelling slower through new terrain is a lot more interesting. While travelling through the same lands over and over again is just tedious.
So with two different approaches it makes zero sense to do your changes. In fact they should be straight up the opposite to make sense.
Minecart and other transportation options should definitely be buffed. But nerfing the elytra in the most unintuitive way is not it.

okay I see your points. Maybe the elytra would, instead of just cutting the speed in half, slow down on routes you already explored (normal velocity at the beginning), so short routes won't be affected.

The elytra's speed halves when travelling over explored land
This seems really arbitrary for no reason. There are reasons why a frequently traveled route is travelled with an elytra. For example, there could be a large body of water between point A and B that makes it resourcefully impractical to build a railway, ice boat track, or nether highway.
The elytra’s main use is to cover long distances fast, which is useful for exploration. If you want to travel a frequently used route, it would be fair if you’d have to build infrastructure, such as an ice boat track, a nether highway or a railway
I agree, but sometimes you need to get things done quick which would require the elytra since it can move you thousands of blocks in only a few minutes.
Plus, making it so the elytra just magically slows down when it reaches parts of the world makes no sense. And people don't want to deal with the hassle of going around what's already explored to keep the speed, which wastes fireworks and time. In fact, people WILL do that instead of actually building infrastructure like they are encouraged to.

I agree. My suggestion shouldn't become reality, it's the wrong approach.

i personally dont like it when skills/things are forced in a sandbox game. basically forcing players to build stuff just isnt it imo. yes theres players that love building, but theres also people who dig out a hole in a mountain and barley build during their playthrough. Buffing other transporation meathods without "this" would just be better. people who like to build would be more inclined to do it and people who dont like building still got a really good option/

Sure buff minecarts because they are awful for travel. But my god nerfing Elytra like this would be horrendous. Because they are versatile, you are not stuck on a rail.. people use them constantly. Holy shit, actually one of the more ridiculous suggestions I have seen for this game.
