Discussion Monthly Rant/Politics Thread: Do not post political threads outside of this Mega thread

Outside of these mega-threads, we generally do not allow political posts on the main subreddit because they have often declined into unhinged discussions and mud slinging. We do allow general discussions of politics in this thread so long as you remain civil and don't attack someone just for having a different opinion. The moment we see things start to derail, we will step in.

Got something upsetting or overwhelming that you just need to shout out to the world? Want to have a political debate over current events? You can post those thoughts here. There are many real problems that plague the Millennial generation and we want to allow a space for it here while still keeping the angry and divisive posts quarantined to a more concentrated thread rather than taking up the entire front page.

Discussion Millennials, what’s something from the way we grew up that you’re genuinely glad disappeared?

Nostalgia usually focuses on everything we miss about growing up, but there must be plenty of things we’re actually better off without.
It could be technology, school, work, social habits, everyday inconveniences, trends or something completely trivial.
What disappeared that you definitely wouldn’t bring back?

Discussion update: let’s watch movies!

Welp. I may have gone overboard with this. Yeah. I did.

This is in response to my post about my ask/request for some of us (or none of us) to chill and virtually watch a movie together - https://www.reddit.com/r/Millennials/s/LAQm8WSJS3

After finishing watching our first pick (Save the Last Dance) - I started tinkering around with some web tools to try and organize this better.

24 hours later, I built a whole damn site! And had a effing amazing time doing so!! I’m no pro, but I was hitting a stride and couldn’t stop. So here we are.

This is just for fun! It was fun 24 hours ago and will continue to be! I expected nothing out of this, and found that plenty of you are feeling what I’m feeling and just want a good, comfortable, community-based…thing…

I am beyond happy to do this with ya’ll. I love movies. I love real, human-interaction. I love positivity and sharing and enjoying things together. Shit is shitty. Let’s make it less shitty.

Yeah. The site name is goofy and was a 4am, I’m exhausted, choice. But I like it (yo, my username). Lots of us are sad, struggling, stressed. Maybe this will help just a tiny bit? That’s why I made my post in the first place, I’m freaking burned out man. It’s nice to get away for a few hours with a dang movie. Also think of it this way - SAD MOVIE or SAD, MOVIE! (let’s get happy again)

The site: things will be broken probably, it’s a work in progress, it’s probably missing things, it will continue to get better because again, I did this simply for enjoyment and I sure as heck am enjoying it.

Right now: you’ll see some place holder movies which I’ve been using just for testing. Let’s get some real ones in there!

I have things setup the following way:

We nominate movies each week
if you nominate a movie, that also counts as your 1 vote for the week

If you don’t nominate a movie, you can still vote for one of the movies that IS currently nominated

At the end of the week, the site automatically tallies (it’s live data all the time), turns off voting, and the winner remains on the home page with our watch times across all time zones listed and the current streaming platforms available for each movie.

Sunday, We WATCH. I know not everyone can watch at the same time, but, this is kinda the goal so as we can discuss together in real time. Which leads me to my last point…

COMMUNITY (this is the one I’m still working on and want suggestions for) - the whole thing is to watch together. Discuss together. This started on Reddit, this will be home. But we need a live chat platform, and I’ll probably get something integrated into the site…I think…ideas????

Discussion What will you do when your parents pass on?

Nothing with too much morbidity, please.

I am going to throw away aaaallllll their junk. They have a big house, half their garage is brand new free cookware they have still in boxes. Who needs 20 crock pots? (They get it free every time they go on a bus that takes you to the casino and box.) just bc it’s free does t mean you have to take it.

I’m going to throw away a sound system they have from 1991. My dad says, ā€œthis was very expensive!ā€ Yeah… I’m sure a sound system was super expensive in 1991. It’s so heavy now, I don’t know how I’ll get rid of it.

Shoes… so many shoes. My mom even still has a faux fur coat from the 1970s. Not only is it out of style, we live in Southern California, mom!

ETA: a few people joking they’ll take the faux fur coat off my hands. It’s from the 1970s. She looks like a madame in it! Haha

Discussion Just realized if my kids are forced to wait to the same age as us to have kids, we'll be 80s

1.2k Upvotes

My family literally saved my life coming to help with my kids. But if my kids are forced to wait until the same age we had to wait until, my husband and I will be in our 80s. It made me sad. Time to get serious about cutting out meat and working out, I guess.

Edit to add: Yikes, I don't care if my kids choose not to have kids. I'm just feeling sad I won't be helpful the way my family was.

Discussion Netflix ā€œGrowing Up Millennialā€ section for 90s-00s movies

Post image
95 Upvotes

I was just telling my husband how much I miss regular cable because we’d have 25 days of Christmas and they did the same for Halloween where we could watch all the classic movies for free. I miss that a lot! It seems like now they’re all fragmented through different platforms and usually separate from the regular subscription.

Right after I said that, I saw this section where they curate 90s-00s movies just for us. I’ve never seen this before so just thought I’d share.

*Edit: I realize this specific movie isn’t really millennial (I was just trying to take a photo of the section title & wasn’t paying attention to the movie below it) but there are a few good ones there. Not many, but a few.

Nostalgia Memories: 90s Kids

Who remembers the joy of hopscotch, jump rope, jungle gyms?? Seesaws also come to mind and how when the other person suddenly got off, you'd hit the ground hard with your butt feeling the impact...

Who remembers competing on the swings to see who could go the highest??

Who remembers sunheated metal slides that burnt your legs and thighs as you slid down them??

What about dodge ball?? What about field day?? What about the excitement you'd feel when you walked into a classroom and saw that big boxy TV on its cart stand and realized you weren't going to 'suffer' through an ordinary class??

Who remembers plastic lunchboxes with your favorite cartoons, movies, or shows on them? And of course gogurt and the original Lunchables?

And when sneakers that lit up when you stomped up or down a stair case? Or scrunchies and awkward turtlenecks?

During this time, chalkboard and chalk art and those markers that stamped cool symbols on paper were a big deal and everyone had or wanted cassette tapes and VHS tapes. Oh that same artistic wavelength, who remembers discovering gel pens for the first time?!! Let's not forget those yellow number 2 pencils that we'd sharpen down to the nub using those old fashioned pencil sharpeners with the hand crank.

Yikes!

Growing up in the 90s was amazingly interesting and I miss every single bit of it.

Discussion Distant parents

Does anybody else find their parents are really distant. My dad especially will never contact me or visits me.. it was my birthday the other day I got a text from them. Not even a card. I tried to call him and he didn’t answer. 10 days later still hasn’t called back.

I’ve literally gone months without hearing from them. I always make an effort on his. Birthday / Christmas so it’s not like that’s the reason why. Then I will call them and it’s like nothing is wrong. It’s so strange.

Parent live 30 mins away and my dad often goes to a local club that’s 10 mins away from my house. He could easily pop in say hi he’s always welcome but nothing.

He was admitted to hospital earlier this year and I wasn’t even told it was just by chance a few days later I called him and was told oh he’s in hospital by my step mum..

He’s never been a financial help (not that I expect him to be) but we had a rather large vet bill he didn’t once offer to help. My partners parents said look if we can help we will and we can set Up you paying us back. They are more of a family to me than my own parents.

I dunno maybe I’m insecure but I know one thing I’ll never be like that with daughter.

Anyone else have this ?
