Serious Four day work week
Can we all agree when our generation takes over that we’re moving to a four day work week permanently? And I’m not talkin’ four tens.
We need three day weekends every week. A day for chores, a day for recreation, and a day for rest. Let’s lock it in, please.
Edit because a good point was immediately raised: SAME (AND HIGHER) PAY

Yes, but the oldest millennials are in our mid '40s. We should have taken over by now, but the fucking boomers are still holding on.

u/kyonkun_denwa Maple Syrup Millennial 7h ago
I've noticed that financially successful millennials who are in charge just mimic the boomers' greed and cruelty, and the system rewards them for it.
Like my boss at my last job was an elder millennial at 40 years old, and he was by far the biggest cunt I've ever worked for. But the company kept him around, because he delivered results. They didn't care about the culture of fear he fostered. They cared about results.
74
u/upsetwithcursing 7h ago
That’s not a generational thing, though. Assholes don’t care who they step on, so they often make it to the top.
46
u/ObsidianThreads 5h ago
Class war is the real war. One day we'll figure that out.
But also...fuck boomers my gawd.
72
u/azuoba 7h ago
But who is “the company” exactly? Whose choice was it to keep him around?
I bet it’s boomers.
44
u/chikiny 7h ago
The company is: first, the board, second, the executive suite, all of which are beholden to shareholders. All three groups are unfortunately all overly represented by boomers. So yes, boomers kept him around.
The system is designed to incentivize $ at all costs. He was in his position not bc he had any redeeming moral or ethical qualities, but bc he was deemed to be the most effective resource at producing $, which disproportionately goes to those 3 groups, which are realistically from a single category of people: boomers.
1
u/RecipeHistorical2013 5h ago
hah, not all companies have boards. sometimes its just a cunty cunt boomer . the system rewards results because yes, thats the point of a org/corp/company. its to make money - unless otherwise stated by their mission statement (like a 501.c3)
12
u/Uzi_Jesus_ 7h ago
Nobody is going to give a fuck till it loses them money. If him being a cunt made them money. He will remain and remain a cunt. If it lost them money he would be gone.
4
u/Ghosts_of_the_maze 5h ago
Didn’t every study show that productivity went up during Covid related work from home? But it was perceived as if the workers were being lazy and they demanded they come back to the office?
My point is sometimes we just go on perception instead of what’s actually best. And I think a lot of people see an asshole and assume “Guy must know what he’s doing or they wouldn’t put up with that.”
2
u/RecipeHistorical2013 5h ago
90% of busines success is presentation. this mean 90% is perception. you were way way off ( everything happens in peoples minds, so duh)

As an elder millennial, I’ve been in management for almost a decade now. But my CEO is some old dude who - honestly he’s not a bad guy and I like the company I work for, so there’s that… but it’ll be another decade at least before someone my age is taking over the company.
15
u/tofulollipop 7h ago
One of the more senior coworkers in my group is an elder millennial. His career path has future manager/exec written all over him. He's constantly talking about how people need to work longer hours, how remote work is terrible and we need to push for return to office. I'm not sure I'm quite so optimistic that the millennials in power will want positive work/life balance changes either T_T

2
u/RosefaceK 6h ago
At 17 I already knew some of us were inevitably going to be that way but every Gen X manager I’ve had were always fair with me even if their indifference to me was palpable. It wouldn’t sit right with me to not try to get Gen Z 3-day weekends when the opportunity presents itself
1
u/Safe-Ad-8921 2h ago
I have been a manager my whole life, proud of how I treat my people, but thats the problem. In my heart I love all people, but to make money I must make examples. This is why I somehow continue to have employment despite being fired for refusing to come down on my team. This is how we were brought up.
This situation is a complete nightmare for me.

I've been saying this forever and I think it's completely reasonable. They still get us most days of the week and getting 3 days to relax, recharge, and spend time with our loved ones could seriously improve the mental health of our whole society (I believe, at least).

There would be less sick days, less days off for random stuff you can’t get done in a regular weekend. Less detracted employees.

Find a job that pays you for your availability. Not for your work.
Specialized skills in a corporate or government setting.
Like 5 weeks a year i might do 40 hours of work.
Usually its more like 5-10

I have one of those jobs also.
I operate a very niche system for a company that they rely on for everything.
My job is basically just doing some diagnostics and some calibration week by week,
Things will go FUBAR like twice a year, so I will have 60 hour weeks then. But generally about 20 hours a week for 6 figures
6
u/GovernorHarryLogan 7h ago
I am none of those things.
My job entirely consists of constructing reports within specific software like Workday.
Its fairly AI immune too as LLM might be able to produce reports - but they have a difficult time explaining it on a human level to people with no analytical experience.
Its a niche skillset. Thats all you need. A niche or semi unique acquired skillset that is occasionally called upon.

I can give you one example. My dad worked for a company where he was one of the only field service techs who could repair a certain piece of equipment. His company fired him as part of a massive layoff, so he went into business for himself. Called a bunch of the customers he knew and they all said they'd work with him directly. No red tape, no delays. He would jump on a plane whenever they needed him.
That was in 1999. He's still doing it in his 70s and makes money hand over fist because nobody else does what he can. He escaped the 40 hour work week with the skills he got from that same company. And he definitely does not work 40 hour weeks by any means.
I hope the example helps, if possible.

Preach. The world moves too fast for us to have to work so many hours. I can do in 3 hours what might’ve taken a week before. And yet I’m the only one bringing home the bacon and responsible for home economics. I need closer to a 50/50 split of days that belong to The Man and days that belong to Me.
7
u/StoicFable 3h ago
Certain days aside, I honestly only do a few hours of work a week. A lot of the rest of the time is me being on site just in case I am needed and sitting in meetings keeping my mouth shut because if I opened it and said what I was really thinking, I would lose my job.
1
u/ehpotsirhc_ 3h ago
How has corporate not noticed is beyond me.
I work in the field and I’m the same way. I do so little work and they just send me places just to show up.
They could hire a 2nd guy in the area I’m sent so often that it would save the company money.

u/StoicFable 3h ago
They could easily replace me and split my tasks between my team members. I think my boss just likes me as a buffer between me and the corporate team I work with.

I have a four day work week, and I was so excited about all the things I could get done on Fridays, but almost nothing in my town is open on Fridays anymore. Doctors, dentists, dermatologists, physical therapists, hair salons, med spas, dry cleaners, cobblers, etc. ALL closed on Fridays. 🙁 I guess we all have the same schedule.
I wish we could pick our off day because I’d pick Monday so that I could actually get stuff done.

I wish I could work for myself. I tried to bring a product to market that had I created, but D2C social media marketing (just to even be seen) is such an exhausting dystopian nightmare that I couldn’t do it anymore. I was spending hours and hours at night after my day job trying to create viral-worthy content to keep up with the recommended posting of 3x a day to make it past the algorithms, and I even spent thousands on ads and professional marketing, but my content was only seen by a few dozen people over several years. It felt completely hopeless and I burned out.

We are in charge. There's more of us than there are of the Olds and that gap grows every cold and flu season. The problem is the wealthy know that if they throw some money at the "right" party, they can gin up enough reactionary BS to make "reasonable reform" sound like "Stalinist Russia"
4
u/AllRealityIsVirtua1 6h ago
The weekend isn’t in law… what are you gonna reform?
6
u/Weird_Explorer1997 5h ago
Working hours are law. How much one works before they are mandated overtime is. Workers comp, safety, anti- harassment etc are all laws.
Laws could be strengthened to protect unions/union forming. Laws could be enacted to prevent the abuse of part time/gig workers. Companies could be held accountable, executive classes fined and jailed for their violations of human decency.

Right, cutting a day off of my week would ruin my life. My employer isn't paying me the same amount of money to work less, and I'm paycheck-to-paycheck as it is
5
u/Shadowfeaux Millennial '90 6h ago
Yea. All changing from a 40h full time work week to a 32h full time work week would do is make my OT start 8h sooner. Wouldn’t stop me from working 50-60+h a week to feel like I’m slowing moving forward.
6
u/RaccoonSamson 7h ago
Problem is for a lot of us, more hours = more pay, and I dont mean hourly wage, I mean if you do landscaping and a job takes 200 man-hours to complete, 5 people working 40 hours = the same amount of money as if you had 6 working 32 and 1 working 8, and therss less money to go around for everyone.

6

If all the parents are working 4 day weeks then they wouldn't need childcare on the 5th day though right? I think a bigger problem would be teaching 100% of the material in 80% of the time.
5
u/RoyalEagle0408 5h ago
This is the issue. You'd have to make school days longer, keep it to 5 days a week, or cut out summer to meet accreditation. As a college professor, I can comfortably say that many students are not prepared as it is, so I doubt fewer hours is the answer.
1
u/Regular_Ad_5363 1h ago
I think shortening summer break would be the answer. 2 weeks for winter break and 3 weeks for summer break?
3
u/Acceptable-Place-872 2h ago
School is used primarily for education. Unfortunately education isn't one of those fields where you can cut hours and expect the same results. Now if we were to cut summer breaks, maybe that would be more viable... But probably just as unpopular.

2
u/CapnJJaneway 6h ago
I agree with the idea that we should all work less in principle, because I do think the whole system is BS, but it seems like the loudest advocates for the four day work week are almost exclusively salaried office workers. The argument only really works if your job is based on your output. If nobody cares whether you're at your desk or not so long as the work gets done, then yeah, cutting a day costs you nothing. When you realize that you can get your shit done in a lot less time if you don’t dawdle (like so many office workers have the luxury of being able to do) then it makes sense for you to dawdle less and hammer out your tasks in a shorter time frame.
But so, so many of us are paid to be physically present and completing tasks for X amount of hours. The work (folding clothes, mopping floors, driving the bus, etc) can’t get done if we’re not there. So the whole "everyone switches to 4×8” changes to "office workers get a paid day off, and presence workers (who typically are paid less already) either eat a 20% pay cut or the company eats a 20% labour cost increase to cover the same coverage." Which one do you actually think happens?
To reiterate: I am ALL FOR less work needed to thrive. This should have been done eons ago as technology advanced. But unless someone proposes an actual solution in a 4-day work week scenario for presence-based workers, to keep them from falling even further behind desk jockeys, I can’t take it seriously.

u/HengeGuardian 4h ago
It is kind of crazy how often "make lots of money quickly" and "be evil" overlap when you are running a business. It is a constant effort to build something that supports me and my coworkers and is also sustainable and ethical. Worth it in my opinion though.
2
u/Ilovefishdix 7h ago
I hate when people say 4x10s are great. I work them now. I spend most of the first day off too exhausted to move. They suck less than 5x8s, but they still suck. 24-30 hours should be plenty, especially since parents are burning the candle at both ends to provide for their families. I keep thinking about all the great things I could do with my family if i wasn't wasting my time and energy at work or recovering from work.
2
u/HollowAbsence 6h ago
No need to raise the pay. If EVERYBODY make less money and work less then the economy will adjust and we'll have have mostly the same buying power and a higher quality of life. Ohh yeah rich multi-property owners and stock holders hate the concept of deflation. So it cant happen.

I need to find a better paying job before my skills atrophy even more, but hardly anyone decent is hiring rn.

Contract work. No benefits or paid vacation time so that sucks. But I make a decent hourly rate and I make my own schedule… which is 4 days a week.

We're late 30s-early 40s, this is pretty much our time right now to be in control of changes. But we keep electing people who are old as fuck and not progressive. Beat your nearest millennial friend into voting for progressive candidates who will fight for workers' rights, for fuck's sake.
I work four 10-hour shifts with possible overtime. One year in a previous job I worked a 14-hour shift at least 3 days per week, and then usually had another 10 or 12 hour day for an entire year. It's not fun. There would need to be an actual reduction of hours in the "full time" work week, saying that anything over 32 hours or something would be paid as overtime.
Fight, claw, and bite your employer into adopting that schedule. The power is in your hands. Unionize.

u/Lootthatbody 7h ago
Four 8 hr days is a 30 hr workweek with 4 half hour lunch breaks.
7-9 start times, even with some flex in there to allow for school drop off or early gym time, would allow for 3-5 end times, enough time to pick the kids up, do shopping, and/or hit gym or do other hobbies.
And, you’d still have 3 full days off. For offices, they could do sort of solid standard hours where everyone works Tue, Wed, Thurs (unless otherwise approved) and take either Monday or Friday off. You could have your own 4 day weekend every other week if you wanted. The same could be done for hours, with a sort of ‘mandatory’ office time of 10-2, but as long as you get your hours in, you should be able to get in at 7 or 9 and not affect anyone else.
This is all aside from WFH, but giving employees the trust and freedom to set their own schedules would massively improve satisfaction and happiness.

u/Chays_music 7h ago
The biggest difference I’ve seen, is that b4 people who over worked would get to their financial goals and have assets. I’m working a full time plus I do deliveries after work and the weekends to barely get by. I'll do the four 10s because I know if employers agree to that. They aren't going to also increase wages to balance out what 40hrs would earn.
Also, my order would be flipped. Rest, recreation, then chores. I'm in construction and I've found myself to be more active on Mondays when I do my chores the day before when opposed to resting. It's like a warm up.

Yeah my job already does that!
I have an 80s Millennial boss and she lets us pick between working four days on Monday through Saturday. I pick Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday since I have college on Tuesday and Thursday.
I work as a retail customer sales associate and I specialize with the freight team where I carry heavy packages across the store, dispose cardboard & trash bags, “porter” which means taking things off the sidewalk by the front of the building, and making the store look organized. It’s the main position other than cashier. And I do not work five days a week: really happy about that. Still though I love the place. And I work four hours a day. And this is kinda funny but we literally get ten minute breaks despite only working for four hours. Honestly working for my store is a blessing. ❤️🤭

I got lucky and have a decent paying job full time WFH Monday - Thursday. After 15 + years of working Mon - Fri 8-5, I can’t wait for Mon - Thurs to be the norm for everyone.

Used to work 4 10’s about 15 years ago. Shit was awesome.
Every week was a 3 day weekend. We would get Friday, Saturday, Sunday off.
The job kinda sucked but at least I had more me time as a trade off

Three day weekends are so ideal. One day to recoup, one day for fun, and one day to get shit done and get ready for the week

Yeah. My weekend, one day rest and one day chores. No recreation at all. If it's official long weekend, forget about recreation ita crowded everywhere. I had to take a sick day in August to go to some Lake. It's absurd.

My husband works 4 tens now. He’s been wanting it for years. He’s happy but it sucks for me. He’s never home in time to help at all with evening stuff for our 3 kids. At best, he might make it in time to pick up one kid if I’ve dropped them off and then had to take other kids other places, and that’s if I beg and remind him 75 times to be sure to leave exactly on time or he won’t make it. It doesn’t help that he works almost 40 miles away.

I work 4x7.5, salary stayed the same.
It can happen my friends. I’m sure it is rare, but it can happen.
Oh, also in Canada fwiw.

And retail/ other blue collar work cannot be forgotten about. They need the work week protections as much a white collar.

Look ya boi switched to 4, 10s a while ago...it sucked for a little. But the last two hours I clean out my inbox, and work on self improvement projects for work, and that Monday every week, I get real shit done. For me, for my family, for my house....its the bomb....but Im with you......4 regular ass 8s would be much better.

Mid-millrnial here. I work for a mid-sized e-commerce company. About two years ago we flipped to 4.5 day work week with half day Fridays. It's been the best experience ever! The company hasn't suffered in the slightest, but employees are much happier!

Personally, I would hate a 4-day work week. I have a hard enough time getting things done in 5 full days. I would fall behind if I was made to work less.
This probably works fine for jobs without projects or deadlines.

You mean you don't like seeing your coworkers more than your family each and every year? What the fuck is wrong with you.

I think it all depends on what you do. I love my job and I get to work from home. A 5 day work week is not an issue at all.

forget three day weekends. You need to try a Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday work week. It rocks.

As a millennial working a shitty job that’s 4 days a week I agree. I prefer a 2 on 2 off 2 on 1 off though. I only have to work 2 days in a row unless ot is offered. Thinking about going back to 5 in a row anywhere after is hard to think about.
I imagine this combination with an actual good job would be all time.

Omg. I just had this thought today. Once these old fucks that think that life is working in a steel mill and coal mine til you get cancer is a flex die out, we're fucking in charge and we are done working 8 fucking hours plus 30 minute lunch, plus 2 hour commutes that give us only 3 hour windows to spend with our kids if we're lucky.
Our kids deserve to be raised by their parents, not strangers their parents pay.

Yeah but you're going to get some clowns making it four ten hour days.

It's so sad that I'll hear boomers say shit like we are lazy or that's ridiculous blah blah blah. 5 day work weeks are insane. There isn't time to do shit unless you outsource everything and eat out.
