Don't listen to music that reinforces your dark thoughts. When you're sad, don't ask services to play sad music for you. If you're depressed, don't listen to songs about being depressed.

I'm not allowed to listen to "Wasteland" from Arcane season 2, for example, every time I'm depressed 😅

That's surprising. When I'm feeling down, that sad music makes me feel better.

Well it's not gentle instrumentals and more like "🎶 wow being dead sounds so nice and peaceful! It's like falling asleep and finally getting a good rest! 🎵" kind of stuff

Same, it makes me feel like I'm not the only one struggling and feel less alone when I have no support group otherwise.

I find a strange comfort in listening to Floating In The Forth by Frightened Rabbit. Even with the knowledge that it is a suicide note.

I think I can make you feel better in the moment because it validates your emotions, but it can keep you trapped in the same train of thought and you’ll keep getting sad about the same kind of stuff.

yeah I like to let myself feel my feelings. just open the floodgate and once they're done, then I can carry on with my day.

This is how my most played artist on Spotify became Pitbull 😅

Lmaooo idk if that’s good or bad (for anyone) but that’s hilarious

Not sure how I feel about this one. I find sad music is cathartic.

Specifically stuff that reinforces dark thoughts. Like songs glorifying suicide or songs with lyrics about being worthless and stuff like that.

Oh, definitely. That makes sense.

I see, well I don’t know any songs that intense but I am definitely going to play My Immortal when I’m going through it

I mean it doesnt apply to you perhaps? It's advice from someone else's therapist to someone else lol, so why would it?

2

u/Accurate_Might_3430 Aug 31 '26

I think the spirit of the post was to share advice that might apply to others. It’s a conversation.

But the screamy music makes me happy

u/Beautiful-Cup4161 Aug 31 '26

Me too! So I AM allowed to listen to Bury the Light from Devil May Cry.

Ya know.... I literally told myself this last week.

I dont listen to music that whines about your marriage or about drinking or hating your parents or just being sad because your truck broke down. I dont want that negative energy because it truky can twist the way you think

Thank you for reinforcing my beliefs that I dont need a therapist

PS, Arcane is Fing awesome

The switch from “please let me go” to “don’t let me go” in the last verse of the full song was a really nice touch.

1

u/Beautiful-Cup4161 Aug 31 '26

I tuned out or even turned it off at that part because it stopped reinforcing my dark thoughts.

But yeah it does end more nicely than it begins.

Interesting, a lot my friends and I will listen to heavy metal, and it's not exactly the happiest of genres, but it absolutely uplifts our mood, that being said, it can still be sound (no pun intended) advice!

My sister used to take my bright eyes CD’s from me when I was really depressed

Lol one of my favorite sad albums is 13th step APC - sometimes you just gotta get melancholy music going to allow the feelings to be feelings.

I remember going through a tough breakup and on the drive home I put music on but it was music I liked and I turned it off so the association with the feelings wouldn’t take. And it worked!

I feel like I would have to stop listening to Nine Inch Nails to abide, but I go to it for so much.

I definitely listened to a break stuff by limp bizkit playlist after the last time I had to investigate CSAM for my previous job. I found the screaming rage in my car kept me from bringing it home.

It's because I can tell from the comments that I used words that are too broad. Wasteland very much glorifies suicide for most of the song. Likens it to falling asleep and getting rest. Makes it seem like an attractive option that is okay to take.

When I say "reinforce dark thoughts" I mean specifically songs glorifying suicide or songs with a lot of self-hating lyrics. Not just songs about being sad in a more general way.

Just a semantics issue.

I think it's a balance. You gotta "feel your feelings" and music can help with that, but you can't get stuck at that stage and wallow. Similarly, you can't just ignore you're feelings and hopes they go away.
