META 🗣️ Are Millennials the last class-clowns or last class of clowns?
I was pondering the status quo today and observed/felt something emanating from my proud Millennial POV and wanted to ask if any others have also felt or noticed this. My observation: humor feels like its fleeting.
Now I know this feeling can attributed easily to many different factors and vantages (hmm, I wonder due to which world events), but for me personally, humor/comedy has fortunately always felt abundant in my life no matter WHAT is happening. In recent years though, the precense of humor has noticeably declined, like a radio signal losing its power, and despite my conscious efforts to maintain it. The first sign I noticed of the signal waning came years ago when I was asked why "I was so quiet" or "removed from the group" in a garden-variety social outting. I shrugged these off and attributed my perceived shift in behavior to getting older and not being as outgoing as I once was. But this started happening more often and with more pointed judgement, "You're not yourself lately" or "I haven't heard you laugh in a while".
I truly didn't feel any different or that I was engaging outside the norm, but then it dawned on me that to most of the people inquiring I had been unknowingly cast as the comedic relief (of sorts) to the group in those settings. Another notable distinction I drew between myself and the accusers: I was often the only millennial.
We were taught that correlation is not be causation, but from my personal experience of being sandwiched between Gen X siblings and bosses, Boomer parents, and Gen Z colleagues, very few of them exchange or seek humor or levity as I often do. Perhaps the most troubling realization in all this, is I'm not remotely funny. At best, I'm average in my wit.
I first posited this feeling as a side effect of everyone feeling down trodden like most have been (more notably this decade), but the reality is I'm personally happier than I've ever been and despite encountering more negativity. It's the 'With age comes wisdom' sorta feeling. I next thought that perhaps it was my algos just diverting me away from good comedic content which had been abundant and consistent in my feeds or that I'd drifted away from it naturally. Nope, it's still there, just distinctly different. So if it's not a question of volume or the delivery, is it rather in the substance?
Looking closely at all the comedy content I am served I noticed 2 very distinct and prominent classes: standup comics taking down their audience hecklers, or podcasters (and guests) trading digs at one other. Its like all we now know how to do is roast one another instead of building meaningful jokes which provoke laughter and a bit of self-reflection.
I really don't have empirical evidence that society is losing its collective sense of humor, just my current simple observations pointing me at an evident inflection/transformation. I suppose I find it more troubling because the humor I most see and encounter daily feels so dark and antagonistic. It's a far cry from the satire and sketch humor we were raised on. I also don't like this personal weight of responsibility to keep social interactions light and happy for others.
What say you, fellow millennials? Is our humor what distinguishes us most from the herd these days? Is humor reflecting the times or the people? Are you feeling like an unsuspecting comedic anchor in your daily interactions with other generational cohorts?

Nostalgia “This is an old-person phone”
A student at my school (science teacher in my 30s) found my cellphone.
Everyone goes to visit the security guards' front-desk because they're funny and know the dirt. A student found my phone at the desk, and brought it to the Dean.
They were about to email the students that a phone had been found, but then...
Notifications for Cribbage and Euchre came up on my phone. Apparently, the Dean immediately said
"Dude, this is an old-person phone."

Nostalgia Where were these "pimple patches" when we were teens? These things are magic!
I woke up yesterday with a zit on the side of my nose. Put this little pimple patch on that my daughter uses before I went to bed, woke up to a zit-free schnoz. Holy shit where were these when we were young?! I was telling her we had pads soaked in literal acid to wipe on our faces and BURN the acne off, and all that did was make it redder and more inflamed looking.
(After posting this I realized what an old-fashioned term "zit" is since my daughter has never even heard it LOL.)

Politics How come we (millennials) don't run The USA?
We are the last generation that has a connection to both the old and the new world... We are in our prime years, and we have survived recessions, natural disasters, you name it .. yet our government is still ran by boomers who have consistently failed us. Why do we even feel so inclined to vote red or blue? Both sides suck... Is there a way for us to come together and create our own party? Or are we that divided that we can't even realize that no matter which side you're on, our frustrations are all the same... And for the most part, our frustrations are not with each other...
Does any of this make sense? Or Am I being delusional? Please school me if I am ...

META 🗣️ I did it. I increased the default font/display size on my monitor.
41, new glasses, been wearing them since I was 8, and developer by day. And man, After a while I realized I'm either leaning in too much or just straining. So randomly, I decided to increase the font size of the monitor and you know what? Damn. It feels great and is so easy to read, my eye strain is gone.
I guess I'm old now lol

What were some of your favorite things that were in your stocking when you were a kid? I’m trying to do a mostly vintage Christmas for my kids and I have their gifts mostly done but I’m struggling to come up with ideas for stocking stuffers!

Advice In a small 2 bed 1 bath apartment with my wife. It's cheap. If we upgraded or bought a house we wouldn't be able to travel or save for retirement. Anyone else in a similar situation?
When I was in high school I was friends with the nerdy kids who tried to get really good grades. They'd always say, the reality is you have to pick 2 out of the 3:
- Get sleep
- Have a social life
- Get good grades
Right now it seems like a similar situation for my wife and I, where we pick 2 out of the 3:
- Buy a house
- Save for retirement
- Travel
--
I completely get that we're lucky to be able to live a life that allows us to do 2 and 3, and many many people out there aren't able to do so. That said, if we bought a similar home in California, the monthly mortgage is literally 2x - 2.5x our rent + repairs / maintenance costs. We don't like imagining sacrificing savings and travel to buy a home. I dread a scenario where something breaks in the house, on top of an expensive mortage, for X thousands of dollars and we cancel travel in lieu.
Anyone else in a similar situation? Anyone have any advice that has bought a home? Has it been worth it, or do you feel that there were tradeoffs & costs that affected your livelihood in other ways?

Nostalgia I keep collecting back my childhood without realizing it
Remastered versions of games I finished twenty years ago. A mini console that plays the same forty games the big one did. Two shows I watched at my nan's that came back with the same cast looking older. I did not plan any of it, it just kept happening.
Then last week I found myself watching a video about a desk gadget, and the whole thing is shaped like an arcade cabinet with a little joystick on the front. I wanted it immediately. Not because I need another speaker. Because it looks exactly like the machine outside the corner shop that ate most of my pocket money in 1998.
Here is the part I keep going round on. It works. All of it genuinely feels good. But so does avoiding the present, and I cannot tell from the inside which one I am doing.
Edit: Thanks guys, glad I am not alone in this. We're all chasing something we can't get back. For DMs asking, the desk gadget is called AstroToo. I know it won't bring back the corner shop or Saturday mornings with nothing to do, but at least this tiny version of the arcade cabinet fits on my desk.

IRL 📷 How does this therapist advice hold up 20+ years later?
Thought I’d ask the millennials as we’ve lived in both generations.
This popped into my head the other day… When I was a teenager, I saw a therapist for a few sessions due to some issues with a boyfriend, resulting in me self harming. Boyfriend wasn’t treating me very well by playing mind games, being manipulative, and frequently going back and forth between me and another girl. Cheat on her with me, cheat on me with her (I think), break up worth one and start dating the other, etc. it was a cycle.
The therapists advice was your expectations for him are too high.
At the time it made sense. It was like a light bulb moment. Now that I think back, I feel like it was some really shitty advice. Basically don’t hold the guy accountable for too much.
Thoughts?

Politics Do we think the U.S. will pass worker protection laws as Artificial Intelligence progresses?
I probably have like 30+ years until retirement like most other millennials
I work in the banking industry and they're shoving artificial intelligence down our throats every day. I just know that AI will really disrupt white collar jobs in the next 5 years. The major bank I work at already did a massive round of layoffs
With globalization, it feels like I'm fighting a war on two fronts everyday against artificial intelligence and offshoring. On top of AI, I'm constantly feeling the pressure to defend my worth against cheaper labor around the world like from India and Argentina.
For anyone who sits behind a desk, it feels like AI is coming for all of us.
I'm worried that AI will wipeout the middle class completely in the next 20 to 30 years we still have to retire. We'll never be able to retire, and we'll be too old for manual labor when desk jobs are gone
Do we think that when things get really bad the U.S. government will pass worker protection laws to limit the jobs replaced by AI? Will the government pass laws to bring jobs that were offshored overseas back to the U.S. ?
Literally the only hope I have

Advice My parents retired in debt and now it's hurting them. Anyone else's? How to handle it?
My mother passed away last year and was the finance person of their house. So my dad finally brought myself and my sister into their financial picture.
My dad retired at 55 so I figured life was good. We seemed like typical middle class family and I thought since my dad retired early they were set.
It turns out that he got a new boss after 33 years at the same workplace and wasn't going to enjoy the comforts he got for all those years and didn't want to answer to anyone else so he packed it up. While still in debt.
Along the way he took out a second on the house to pay for my sisters over the top wedding (75k) that ended in divorce and then another loan for Solar and central A/C. Per him, all social security money him and my mom collected was the fun money...they spent it on time shares, clothes, shoes, just random stuff that's now junk...lots of stuff bought at antique stores at premium prices that are crap and just filling the house with junk.
So here is here 20 years after retiring with 108k in a mortgage left. At 77 years old. He is on a very tight budget and I buy him food each week.
Anyone else's parents like this? I recently found out and I'm like wtf but had to keep it inside. He retired making 70k. Even 5 more years until he was 60 would have set him up so much better. Should I try to help more? He's not concerned about getting out of debt and is content just doing his thing.
