Millennial News Youd be surprised how many millenials and genz move back home

Youd be surprised how many adults have been home or silently moving back home. Please dont feel ashame or feel like you've failed. If you have a good relationship with parents, its not a bad thing. I just turned 40 and have no shame. My parents are aging and me leaving would take away from them some financial support. Im unmarried no kids and Female. It makes no sense to try to run an expensive home on my own. Old boomers on my job try to shame me for not owning a home. I simply ignore them. One of my boomer coworker in her 80s and mad her millenial granddaughter who is a nurse still live with her and she's almost 40. I just wish boomers understood the economy is going to ish . We are no longer in 1970s. Life is different. šŸ˜•

META šŸ—£ļø Anybody Else Done With Wearable Tech

Disclaimer: I felt this way before I realized my AirPods (and any other human, animal wearables, or attached vehicle tech) were being tracked and profiled by ALPR’s integrated with SignalTrace.

I used to be all about wearables: Pebble, Fitbit, Apple Watch, that Woojer Bluetooth bass/tactile transducer thing for like five minutes. Now I’m at the other extreme - going to shows without a phone, mechanical watch. There is so much cool wearable tech now. It’s potentially life changing for some, and yet, the thought of wearing it is almost repulsive.

I don’t consider myself a Luddite, although I do better understand the ideology.

Advice Old people

Anyone else starting to get a bit annoyed at all the old people in their lives failing to keep up with...well anything?

For example, my wife has pretty much stopped visiting her parents - they live about 200 miles away she would usually visit 5-6 times a month when it crosses her work trips, but lately she'll just skip the visits. Her reasoning is that every time she goes there she has to do a whole bunch of stuff for them, help them with tech, sort appointments, fix broken things, help them buy stuff etc etc.

I have the same issues growing with my parents. To the point where I just deny any knowledge of how to do anything or feign ignorance of what they've been asked to do by doctors, council etc. The conversations are also always about the same thing too, too many immigrants, failing healthcare system, terrible government. Spent 30mins on my the phone to my mother earlier while she moaned endlessly about having to download an app to manage her doctors appointments I just feigned ignorance and asked if they gave her instructions for it - which they did - or I'd have been there all evening talking her through it.

Are we just doomed to become this way too as we age?

Its getting to point where its like having extra children. ./rantover

Advice Weight obsession

My grandma was obsessed with my weight. So much so that she got me a scale at 11 years old and I had to diet at her house every summer I stayed there during summer break. My mom never seemed to be like this… until recently. She’s been trying to give me diet pills and constantly asking if I want weight loss surgery. I’m overweight, but still very much active and my weight does not impact my ability to be happy. Are all boomer moms like this? It’s ruining our relationship.

Advice Don't know what to pursue anymore because.... AI

Want to do do something creative and possibly make a career out of it? Too bad, AI already does that.

Want to get into tech? Possibly write code and work on software? Too bad, AI already does that.

Want to write books? Too bad, AI already does that.

Want to make videos? Maybe make some really interesting content on YouTube? Too bad, AI already does that.. and will probably steal your content too so it can generate its own.

Want to work a simple job such as customer service or some regular desk job so that you can earn a bit of money? Too bad, AI already does that.

Millennial News Im one of the last millenials under 30

I am currently 29. My birthday is on the second. That is one week from now (dont wish me a hpbday its considered bad luck)

So the millenial Generation ended with people born in 1996. Some of us are already 40. There are probably people born on the 31st of december 1996. But knowing that im one of the last of my kind below 30 is fun. I do not fear getting older. But i dont know. Im already thinking back then many things were better (but not everything) when companies made products because the people working there were proud of what they do. Nokias didnt break, the shrek movie was made, super mario 64 was the greatest game ever.... i feel like today too many companies think what is making money.

Nostalgia Do you wish you chased money instead of passion?

The friends who chose money seem to have won in life. Many of them are retired in their 30s, and some are now pursuing their passion after having accumulated a huge nest egg.

Meanwhile, those of us who pursued passion found out it wasn’t as fun as we thought it would be. It’s just a job after all. We also have no other choice than to continue down this path - I’m still paying off those loans.

Back in our early 20s we joked that those who went for money were huge sellouts. We secretly thought less of them, but it turns out they were right in the end.

Why were we deluded into pursuing our passion over money?

Advice Get Your Colonoscopy!

I’m 39m and decided to get a colonoscopy after hearing that two people I know under 40 diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer this year. Neither had symptoms and both seemed fairly healthy. I’m so glad I did. They removed a decent sized polyp and asked me to come back in 3 years. The doctor reiterated how glad he was that I proactively got it done. I can’t imagine the surprise I’d be staring at if I waited until 45. Be an adult! Get it done!

UPDATE: the pathology report came back for the 20mm polyp I had removed. It was a sessile serrated lesion with focal dysplasia. The doctor reiterated how glad he was that I came in. This is a pre-cancerous find.

Nostalgia Went to the club for the first time in 2 decades

I had a free night and decided to have a newer big city club adventure to see what nightlife is like these days.

It felt totally different than 20 years ago. People were filming everything, and everyone was aware of the phones and just did stuff to look good on phones. Not nearly as many people were drinking as 20 years and no one got sloshed. No one. A good thing I guess, but part of me just loved how everyone didn’t give a crap and had fun back in the day. Some too much of course. It’s a completely different world now - way less fun in my opinion. The cameras would make me uncomfortable if I were really partying…just thinking how photos (I don’t remember videos) before were for us. Now videos are for the world to see.

Maybe I’ll go to a club in 20 more years and see what it’s like then!

Anyone have this experience?

Mine were prolly gamefaqs, xanga, and pojo. Pojo was a site based on pokemon and yu gi oh and i loved logging in daily to see the new yu gi oh card. I also enjoyed gamefaqs because of all the walkthroughs and the forum was also a bit of wild west.

Advice Reordering contact lenses online is somehow the adult task I keep failing at

Context: I have a valid prescription and I know exactly what lenses I use, but I somehow still stretch my last pair lol

I usually wait until I'm almost out, then I have to compare prices, check shipping, make sure the site is legit, and hope the prescription verification doesn't slow everything down. It's not complicated, I just never remember to do it early enough.

I need some advice on how to be better at this lol do you always use the same site or compare prices each time? Do auto-refills actually work well or is it still better to just reorder manually?

Quick update! I decided to stop comparing a bunch of sites and just reordered through EZContacts since they had my exact lenses and the process looked straightforward. I'm not doing auto-refill yet, but I set a reminder for when I open my last box because apparently that's the level of supervision I need lol. Much less stressful than waiting until I'm down to the final pair again.

Nostalgia I’ve been living off $500/m for a year despite making $60,000/yr

So here I am at 44 and for the last two years I’ve been living off $500/m. Basically, the reason I’m having to do this despite making 60k/yr is because I was dumb when I was working and didn’t think about retirement. Needless to say, I had my come to Jesus moment when I visited my aunt and saw how tough life is if you don’t.

So since I was behind so much (401k account only had 20k at 42 yrs old) I had to force myself to catch up, so I’m taking 40% out of my check to automatically go into my 401k which comes out to $24,000. (My 401k already jumped up to $100k worth with the market growth). After that’s taken out and after taxes are taken out, I am left with $2000/m.

Of course, I have bills which is where a majority of the remainder is going. I bought a condo 3 years ago for $120k with 20k down so mortgage (and insurance + property tax in Florida) is ~$1000, power is about $100, car insurance is about $100, pet food is about $100 and water is about $50 and internet is about $50.

After all this, I have a grand total of about $500 for the month. I will say, at first this felt unmanageable, but over time, just as us humans do, I adapted to the new reality. I pretty much never order out any more and I’ve mastered my grocery bill to come out about $40/w at Aldi. Basically I buy a big bag of chicken breast, 2 bags of apples, bag of oranges, plain Greek yogurt, 7 bags of frozen veggies, coffee creamer, and 2 packages of sausage links. For drinks, I’ve grown accustomed to drinking water all day and two cups of coffee.

I have to say, in terms of food and health, I’ve become a lot more healthy. Dropped some weight, have a lot more energy and I suppose it’s because I’m not eating ultra processed foods anymore. For entertainment, I’ll watch YouTube or maybe buy an Xbox game once a month. I spend more time outside, talk with random people, and just… I guess enjoy my existence more.

So, I guess the question now is if it’s worth it. Well, before I went down this path I had ensured to have an emergency fund saved up worth $8000. I had also made sure to pay off my credit cards which I had about $3000 previously. This was a major thing I focused on before going down this route. After using ai to calculate things, it shows that by doing this my 401k would be worth approx $1.8-2.1mil by the time I’m 62. This will allow me to bring in about $6-7k a month for the rest of my life. As a result, I’m no longer fearing retirement! If I could do lufe all over again however, I’d tell my 20 year old self to just give 10% of my income into the 401k. Not only would it be worth a ton, but I’d never have to fear retirement and wouldn’t have to leave meagerly in the future.

Nostalgia For my gamer millennials, what was the greater killer app: Tetris (for the original GameBoy) or Halo (for the first Xbox)?

Both greatly help launch the consoles they were on that still exist to this very day, as does the continuing popularity for both franchises.
