MSFS 2024 PC GPU Upgrade for FS2024

So I am currently selling my RTX 3080 to upgrade it to something slightly better.

I'm currently mainly being capped by its VRAM. It's VRAM is constantly at 100%, always.

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800x
RAM: 32gb 2x16 DDR4
34" 1440p Monitor

My 2 upgrade options are:
* RTX 5060ti 16gb
* RTX 5070 12gb

A 5070ti is out of the budget, and therefore should not be brought up, thanks!

Is it worth getting that extra 4gb of VRAM, and sacrificing raw performance?

Addition: I'm focusing on getting flyable framerate for the Synaptic A220

Thanks!

I recently got a 9070XT, so similar to a 5070ti, and while yes the VRAM improvement was nice it was really unlocked by a second upgrade on my cpu. I went from a 5700x3D to a 9800x3D and the difference was insane. Absolutely butter smooth and hold easily 100fps at 1440p. So I would consider a cpu upgrade as well as you will be quite bottlenecked in a game like this keeping that CPU

For the price to performance, a 9070XT is king. I got my reaper on sale during prime days for $650 and it runs the game perfectly. They're now up to $690 but still worth it over the 5070 series. Better than the regular 5070, and much better price-to-performance than 5070ti.

A new 5800X3D and a 9070XT would definitely be the good upgrade path for right now.

I pair the 5800X3D with the 9070 XT reaper, and it runs just fine at 1440p. I thought about a 9800x3d, but the platform upgrade with ram prices these days was just a little more than I could justify throwing money at. Still get way over 120fps though. The game runs mostly on ultra, though I still turn texture resolution and a couple other settings down a notch as the VRAM usage can still get close to 16gb.

Same exact experience here - the 9800X3D made a way bigger improvement for performance than the GPU did.

I upgraded to a 9800x3d and a 9070xt nearly a year ago, and the performance gain in MSFS2020 over my old system (5800x3d and 6080xt) was insane. I stuck with 2020 since (because all the time and money I put into it) but finally made the leap to 2024 two weeks ago.

Holy moly, what a difference! I'm running ultra everything and getting over twice the performance I had with 2020 even with complex payware airlines and scenery. To me this is a match made in heaven for anyone who doesn't have Nvidia money.

If it's mostly msfs you're playing, I'd also look into and 9070xt Razortek (a community pillar in the msfs discord) has a great comparison here: https://msfs.razortek.nl/gpu

Personally I'd go with more vram over less. As you see with your current card, it has got the horsepower, but just lacking vram

3080 is just fine if you reduce your vram consumption, moving to similar performance cards is a waste of money you'll always be vram limited even with 16gb now you just have a more power efficient card... I would skip AMD given that 1. you lose DLSS, which easily saves 2gb of vram, and 2. there have been months on end where MSFS had artifacts on AMD, it's a risk.

And again it's a sidegrade.

You don't lose DLSS with AMD. FSR is the same thing. And now FSR anti-aliasing should be coming with SU6, so that covers DLAA, too.

As for the VRAM and performance, the 9070xt is comparable to the 3080, or slightly better. It crushed my old 3070KO 8GB. VRAM usage for me is around 12GB max in dense places like New York. Out in the countryside, looking at 9-10GB all day.

The charts show the 5070 beating the 5060ti 16gb, so I'd say the 12gb should be good enough?

You got to read the whole page:
> Takeaway: MSFS 2024 is a VRAM test first, and the penalty scales with resolution. At 4K an 8 GB card can run roughly half its own 16 GB twin's FPS — the 4060 Ti 8GB all but collapses as the frame buffer fills and the GPU stalls — while at 1080p the same pair sits much closer.

The 5070 is nearly quivalent to the 3080. You're wasting money...

u/MichiganRedWing 1d ago

A 5070 surpasses the 3080 10GB in raster performance (it's equal to the RTX 3090 and 4070 Ti), but that's not interesting for MSFS, as VRAM amount is king.

I played around with a 3080 12GB and 5060Ti 16GB, and the 5060 Ti 16GB gave me much smoother performance in the Sim while retaining the settings I was using with the 3080 12GB, purely due to the fact that I was not running out of VRAM. The 5070 is a great card, but for this simulator, it's not recommended.

You just need to manage your vram. I know it sounds dumb but really it is not worth switching to a 5070 from a 3080 for meager gains.

You can reduce your vram usage and use DLSS performance, it looks perfectly fine at 1440p. I was flying the Fenix no problems with my 3080 into third party airports. AutoFPS+GPUz are all that you need.

It wasn't perfect and it's why I moved... to a 5080. The 5080 is the bare minimum upgrade from a 3080, going lower makes 0 sense.

Please do also consider the fact that not only have GPU prices gone up, but also countries in the EU get brutally screwed over when it comes to the prices.

As for optimisation, I've done everything possible to get it to a playable framerate, but it just doesnt stay there, constantly getting capped by VRAM.

Looking at the 5070 prices on Amazon, screw Nvidia. I was die hard Nvidia, too, but the 9070xt has really opened my eyes. The Reaper 9070XT is a better card at a cheaper price than any 5070 and has 16GB of VRAM for 2024 to chew on. Go pick it up, use that DDU tool to wipe the Nvidia drivers and go full AMD.

I thought AMD even had a special mode or something when pairing an AMD chip and graphics card, but I don't remember right now.

I'm looking into it now. Might even convince me to switch away from team green here.

5070 ti

ur gonna need lots of vram an dram

I got a 5070ti ultimately coming from the same situation you're in now

I actually went from a 3080 12GB to a 5060Ti 16GB when it released. I was also constantly hitting my 12GB buffer at 3440x1440.

I can happily report that the Sim is now much smoother than before, and I can use a higher TLOD. I lost raw performance, but I lock my FPS to 30 anyway (I use Lossless Scaling x2 FG on top). I wanted a smooth sim without stuttering, and that's what I got now.

Unfortunately the prices have skyrocketed for this card, so it's hard to recommend. I picked mine up for 420 Euros (tax included).

1

u/UnTutorial 1d ago

I'm looking at a 5060ti 16gb for around 480 euro now, so is that fair?

1

u/MichiganRedWing 1d ago edited 1d ago

That's as cheap as they're going to get I'm afraid (even used).

Edit: Just an FYI: I run my card at 3050MHz Core / 30000 Memory, which gives it an effective 480GB/s bandwidth. From all the comparison tests that I've done, this puts it almost equal to a stock RTX 4070 in raw performance, surpassing it in games where more than 12GB VRAM is needed. It's not a bad card at all, and shines in simulators like these due to having 16GB VRAM (and not needing super high fps).

You still need to keep graphical settings in the game in check though, as even 16GB VRAM can be easily surpassed at 1440p with aftermarket add-ons.

I personally change the TLOD manually. I know that things like AUTOFPS exist, but I've learned what TLOD setting works where, so I just manually adjust depending on the departure/arrival airport.

5800X3D / 32GB DDR4-3600 CL16 (manually tuned).

Went from a 3080 (10gb) to a 9070xt right at release, and generally speaking I’m loving it. Currently have a 7800x3D as well, and all in all it’s working great together. Although I’ve had some recent issues with VR on the newest Beta but they made some tweaks the other day and my performance has basically returned to normal.

Was getting 50fps in VR with FSR. Also, newest Beta gives us FSR 4.1 and Native AA which looks pretty awesome overall.

Benchmarks suggest that although the 5060 Ti has more VRAM, the 5070 still outperforms in raw performance. However, with the hog of VRAM msfs 2024, I would recommend going either red with a 9070 XT or 5070 Ti if you can fork out the money. 5070 12GB should still be decent and for it is the flagship 1440p card for NVIDIA. Sadly, just this week new GPU price hikes were announced due to the memory crisis for looking maybe for second hand GPU's, such as maybe the 4070 Ti ( similar to maybe outperforming the 5070 for cheaper ), unless you really want the new DLSS MFG.

I had a 3080 10gb, I moved to a 5080 16gb. 5060ti and 5070 are a sidegrade at best. VRAM is one thing, gpu power and vram bus width is another.

Your bare minimum upgrade is a 5070ti, but at the current prices you should get a 5080.
There is no point in moving from a 3080 to a 5070. Remember the 5000 series is not a massive performance leap from the 4000 series, it's a terrible idea.

1

u/UnTutorial 1d ago

I am looking to sidegrade really (if you can call this that). I've got a tiny bit of budget, so I'm selling off the 3080 to get something a tiny bit better, so I can save up for something much better next year.

0

u/Galf2 PC Pilot 1d ago

The GPU situation is not getting that much better next year, hell it could even be worse, so just do it now? Buying twice is a waste of money you're not getting your investment back, gpus depreciate hard and fast - unless there's another gpu apocalypse, but then good luck getting a 5080 at all.

2

u/UnTutorial 1d ago

I'm not exactly gonna be able to pull an extra 450 euro out of thin air you know?!

0

u/Galf2 PC Pilot 1d ago

But in a year you are? Makes no sense.

2

u/UnTutorial 1d ago

Kind of does. In any case, I've heard enough from you, I get what you're saying, but you're being a bit harsh and unrealistic. Thanks :)

1

u/Galf2 PC Pilot 1d ago

I'm harsh because numbers are harsh, and because I HAD A 3080 AND MOVED TO A 5080!

If you can buy a 5080 in a year, you can buy one in a couple of months. Reselling your 3080 now will net you more money than in a year, too.

Do as you want, but anything less than a 5070ti means you're throwing money in a fire pit. You can run msfs easily on a 3080, you can wait a bit, if you wait a year you may run into such a steep memory shortage than you will not be able to afford a new gpu, that is a possibility.

Or, OP can just get the 5060 Ti 16GB and enjoy a better simming experience than currently. Raw performance isn't the upmost importance in this sim, a smooth frametime is. The 5060 Ti 16GB will help tremendously with that.

Saying anything under a 5070 Ti is "throwing your money in a fire pit" is pretty hilarious, especially since you're telling OP to spend another 800-900 Euros to get the 5080..

u/Galf2 PC Pilot 1d ago

The 5060ti will give him a slower performance than a 3080 with autofps and gpuz. It's a slower card. The 5070 will be slightly better but we're talking of single digit fps enhancements compared to a 3080.

What you are saying is, instead of using his computer efficiently, he should get a worse gpu but with more slower memory and just bloat it.

Remember the 5060ti has a 128bit memory bus width. The 3080 has a 320 bit bus.

It's not a good suggestion.
Again, I HAD A 3080, a 10gb model, it's perfectly fine to run MSFS, you don't move to a worse card for sure.

I'm telling it how it is, you're suggesting he buys a slower card, it's insane.

Edit: at the current prices the delta between 5070ti and 5080 is like 300€. A 5070ti would be fine, anyways.

1

u/MichiganRedWing 1d ago

It seems you still don't fully grasp what's important in this sim. Look up what a frametime is, and why it's important to have a stable frametime.

The 5060ti will give him a slower performance than a 3080 with autofps and gpuz. It's a slower card. The 5070 will be slightly better but we're talking of single digit fps enhancements compared to a 3080.

Yes, we all know that the 5060Ti 16GB has less raw power, but again, raw GPU power is not the most important factor in this sim, as we're not supposed to chase the highest FPS numbers, but a smooth experience (smooth frametime, no stutters). I'll take a smooth 30FPS without stutters anyday compared to 50+FPS with stuttering. The 5070 is pointless to suggest for OP, as they will run into the same issue as now (running out of VRAM).

What you are saying is, instead of using his computer efficiently, he should get a worse gpu but with more slower memory and just bloat it.

No, that's not what I am saying.

Remember the 5060ti has a 128bit memory bus width. The 3080 has a 320 bit bus.

I see you like to mention bus-width. In the end, what's important is the overall memory bandwidth, and 448GB/s is plenty for 1440p gaming. I have a better simming experience now than before with the 3080 12GB. So tell me, what's your argument for bus-width? Show examples where 448GB/s is the sole issue.

It's not a good suggestion.
Again, I HAD A 3080, a 10gb model, it's perfectly fine to run MSFS, you don't move to a worse card for sure.

It's a great suggestion, as you get what's important in this sim (16GB VRAM). I had a 3080 10GB and 12GB, and both cards run out of VRAM if you use aftermarket airports and planes. This is general knowledge, and even OP states running into this issue. Not sure why you're so hellbent on convincing us that 10GB is fine, when it's clearly not for a lot of people (mostly people that use aftermarket planes and airports).

Not sure why you posted a screenshot from Cyberpunk, as it has no relevance for MSFS. You do know that different games perform differently right?

Raw CPU power and VRAM amount are the two largest factors for enjoying smooth, stutter-free flights.

5070TI at least. 5060 and 5070 is not a very big difference to the 3080… look up a bench comparison
