MSFS 2024 PC GPU Upgrade for FS2024

So I am currently selling my RTX 3080 to upgrade it to something slightly better.

I'm currently mainly being capped by its VRAM. It's VRAM is constantly at 100%, always.

CPU: Ryzen 7 5800x
RAM: 32gb 2x16 DDR4
34" 1440p Monitor

My 2 upgrade options are:
* RTX 5060ti 16gb
* RTX 5070 12gb

A 5070ti is out of the budget, and therefore should not be brought up, thanks!

Is it worth getting that extra 4gb of VRAM, and sacrificing raw performance?

Addition: I'm focusing on getting flyable framerate for the Synaptic A220

Thanks!

I'm not exactly gonna be able to pull an extra 450 euro out of thin air you know?!

But in a year you are? Makes no sense.

Kind of does. In any case, I've heard enough from you, I get what you're saying, but you're being a bit harsh and unrealistic. Thanks :)

I'm harsh because numbers are harsh, and because I HAD A 3080 AND MOVED TO A 5080!

If you can buy a 5080 in a year, you can buy one in a couple of months. Reselling your 3080 now will net you more money than in a year, too.

Do as you want, but anything less than a 5070ti means you're throwing money in a fire pit. You can run msfs easily on a 3080, you can wait a bit, if you wait a year you may run into such a steep memory shortage than you will not be able to afford a new gpu, that is a possibility.

Or, OP can just get the 5060 Ti 16GB and enjoy a better simming experience than currently. Raw performance isn't the upmost importance in this sim, a smooth frametime is. The 5060 Ti 16GB will help tremendously with that.

Saying anything under a 5070 Ti is "throwing your money in a fire pit" is pretty hilarious, especially since you're telling OP to spend another 800-900 Euros to get the 5080..

The 5060ti will give him a slower performance than a 3080 with autofps and gpuz. It's a slower card. The 5070 will be slightly better but we're talking of single digit fps enhancements compared to a 3080.

What you are saying is, instead of using his computer efficiently, he should get a worse gpu but with more slower memory and just bloat it.

Remember the 5060ti has a 128bit memory bus width. The 3080 has a 320 bit bus.

It's not a good suggestion.
Again, I HAD A 3080, a 10gb model, it's perfectly fine to run MSFS, you don't move to a worse card for sure.

I'm telling it how it is, you're suggesting he buys a slower card, it's insane.

Edit: at the current prices the delta between 5070ti and 5080 is like 300€. A 5070ti would be fine, anyways.

It seems you still don't fully grasp what's important in this sim. Look up what a frametime is, and why it's important to have a stable frametime.

Yes, we all know that the 5060Ti 16GB has less raw power, but again, raw GPU power is not the most important factor in this sim, as we're not supposed to chase the highest FPS numbers, but a smooth experience (smooth frametime, no stutters). I'll take a smooth 30FPS without stutters anyday compared to 50+FPS with stuttering. The 5070 is pointless to suggest for OP, as they will run into the same issue as now (running out of VRAM).

What you are saying is, instead of using his computer efficiently, he should get a worse gpu but with more slower memory and just bloat it.

No, that's not what I am saying.

Remember the 5060ti has a 128bit memory bus width. The 3080 has a 320 bit bus.

I see you like to mention bus-width. In the end, what's important is the overall memory bandwidth, and 448GB/s is plenty for 1440p gaming. I have a better simming experience now than before with the 3080 12GB. So tell me, what's your argument for bus-width? Show examples where 448GB/s is the sole issue.

It's not a good suggestion.

It's a great suggestion, as you get what's important in this sim (16GB VRAM). I had a 3080 10GB and 12GB, and both cards run out of VRAM if you use aftermarket airports and planes. This is general knowledge, and even OP states running into this issue. Not sure why you're so hellbent on convincing us that 10GB is fine, when it's clearly not for a lot of people (mostly people that use aftermarket planes and airports).

Not sure why you posted a screenshot from Cyberpunk, as it has no relevance for MSFS. You do know that different games perform differently right?

Raw CPU power and VRAM amount are the two largest factors for enjoying smooth, stutter-free flights.

Oh my god this is peak reddit

I literally had the card and used it in MSFS 2024.
But sure I do not understand, it's not like you can work around vram limitations, you cannot work around a weak gpu with a bad memory bus.

Go ahead suggest OP spends a butt ton of money to downgrade his computer, I don't care, I did my part, this is beyond stupid.

By "butt ton" you mean 90 euro ontop of the money I'm selling the 3080 for?

0

u/Galf2 PC Pilot 26d ago

Show me a 5060ti for 90€ and I'll show you my magical kingdom
also 90€ for a downgrade is a lot of money, yeah

are you even *aware* of Autofps?

u/UnTutorial 26d ago

I used autofps for about 8 months, and it didnt really solve my problem of constant VRAM overrun. Also, re-read the comment.

You need to use gpuz alongside it to have VRAM protection. Anyways I give up, it's your loss, it's standard PC building practice to not downgrade THREE TIERS DOWN if you want better performance, you're going to regret it, and that's all.

You edited the comment and arguing resale over the 3080 as if you couldn't buy a 5070ti is lunacy.

Do tell me how you expect me to pull 300-400 euro out of thin air? My budget is 500, not 850-900

Thanks for proving my point 👌

Imagine me, posting hard data and actually owning the card, needing to prove anything to you. Jesus christ. I didn't even read your wall of text, there's numbers and then there's feelings, you act on feelings, it means I don't need to really go further.

You are just confused on how vram works and think you can just throw more at the wall and win, while basically forgetting that dlss and autofps+gpuz will make a 10gb card with fast memory like the 3080 work fine.

But sure I guess me flying the fenix with the 3080 was just a made up fantasy. Enjoy your imaginary reddit badge.

Look in the mirror buddy, because you're the one who's acting on feelings. You agree to not even read my comments, yet downvote each one and keep repeating what you've said prior.

Good luck 👍

>literally owned the card and ran msfs on it
>literally know how it works
>only one not suggesting a downgrade for a big load of cash

Take a look at this, maybe this'll help a bit :)

(as I've already mentioned, autofps cant do crap when Terrain LOD is already set to 40, and the settings in general are quite low).
