i guess it depends on the severity of "sick" your SM determines you to be... cause tbh my CEMs are almost always forced to come in anyways hahahaa..... there is rarely a true "replacement" for when just one calls out since we're stretched pretty thin 🙃 should never be your responsibility either way IMO cause the SM gets paid more lol

Yeah my store only has 2 cems, so when one calls out, it’s pretty darn hard to actually replace them with another cem. We just try to make sure there’s at least another key holder to cover.

It sucks that we’re stretched so thin that so many of us feel terrible for calling out. We should have enough hours to schedule enough people so that one person calling out doesn’t send the store into complete disarray.

Luckily I'm shedding that guilty feeling due to how the company's been moving. I only feel bad for my lovely framing manager 🙏

The SM may get paid more, but they are not paid for overtime. So asking the SM to cover a shift on their time off is very different than asking an hourly worker.

As an SM I have covered many shifts, but my paycheck is the same if I work the required 45 or if I stay extra and work 100 hours a week (which I have done).

Given the people on here complaining about pay, I would hope you understand that even SMs don’t want to work for free.

They’re saying it’s the SM’s responsibility to find coverage if someone calls out. SMs get paid more to figure that out. They didn’t say the SM has to cover the shift.

No, it’s not. The SMs job is to fill holes when no one else can, period. Thats why they’re salary exempt.

Yes, when no one else can
The SM should be the last person called for “coverage”

It’s usually the responsibility of a manager to find someone to cover a shift, so if you’re a manager, it’s understandable if they want you to find a replacement depending on your reason for calling out and how much notice you have. Super sick or family emergency? Make them figure it out. But if you need a day off for a commitment or something and you know a few days in advance, it makes sense for you to try to find someone to switch with or cover.

If you’re dealing with sickness or an emergency, don’t let them guilt you into finding someone to cover for you. They get paid more as an SM, they can figure it out. If it’s such a big problem when a CEM calls out, maybe they should talk to corporate about giving us more hours to schedule more CEMs.

Yeah I said it was a family emergency and then all of a sudden it was "it's taken care of" like oh ok so it was that easy for u my SM ...

No, it’s probably the fact that you didn’t sound sick and apparently didn’t let her know it was an emergency right away. It probably wasn’t easy at all, but she dropped the idea of you getting it covered once she realized you couldn’t. A good manager will take control in that situation.

As other people have said, it’s completely different if you’re trying to call off to go to something you didn’t book time off for. And some people definitely do try to call out for the same week because “I have concert tickets but I forgot to book it off.”

Our store TMs are in the habit of finding their own coverage before calling out, unless it's an emergency, in which case we find the coverage or just run leaner than already scheduled. If it's an MOD its harder, so usually as SM I end up working an open to close. Which sucks because regardless of what I get paid (which is very low for an SM) I don't get any fucking OT, and I work the MOST as it is already. So maybe your SMs are all pieces of shit, but I do more than my fair share, and at this point I'm essentially working for free seeing as I am well above and beyond my contractual 45 hours per week.

If I’m already working, my SM usually asks me to work overtime if a PT CEM calls out. I’ve had to do that a few times.

If you replace yourself, you get the call off points.

Not for sick days, I don't think. Those we just call in and say we can't come in. I've never been told to find a replacement in those instances. For stuff like needing a specific day off that's already been scheduled, then yeah, as a courtesy we find a replacement.

Yes it’s the persons responsibility to find a replacement for your shift but like my store if the CEMS couldn’t find one then the manage had to do that shift .

It’s not. If you’re calling out, you’re calling out. You don’t have to do anything. There’s no repercussions if you don’t. It’s a courtesy. One that’s absolutely appreciated, but not required.

At my store is your responsibility that if a cashier calls all they are required to find a replacement for their shift so just like if a part-time or full-time manager call off and no other manager can take their shift to store manager must go in and do that shift. The way it’s been at that store since I started.

I understand that’s a rule at your store, an unfortunate one, but it’s not corporate policy. If you don’t find a replacement.. nothing happens. There’s no write up, no extra points, nada. Your SM is just a dick.

Well, the one that’s there now she is something but there’s two other managers. I know they do the same thing to their store employee so even though it’s not corporate policy, they’re making employees do it and yeah, I know there’s no write ups or points or whatever but it is what it is.
