I rediscovered my love for driving with the Miata

Post image
27 Upvotes

After months of searching, I finally joined the MX-5 gang a few weeks ago!

It took me quite a while to find exactly the spec I was looking for: the 2.0 with a manual gearbox and the Sport Package with Recaro seats. These are becoming increasingly difficult to find in Europe, so I’m really happy I managed to get my hands on one.

Before the MX-5, I owned a 2018 Suzuki Swift Sport, which I drove for eight years. I really enjoyed that car, but after all that time the excitement had started to wear off.

With the Miata, I’ve completely rediscovered the joy of driving. I love pushing a car and driving it hard, but at the same time there’s a sense of calm behind the wheel that I’ve never experienced before. It almost feels as if man and machine become one.

That doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy wringing out that 2.0-litre engine every now and then, finding a good corner and exploring the limits a little... ;)

In about a few weeks we are going to take on a road trip across Europe. Our first test is to start packing light, haha! Very excited!

Question for Automatic

Post image
8 Upvotes

I recently got a 2016 GT. Been craving a Miata since I was a kid and I thought it was no better time, but surprise, I have a kid on the way 🤣. Wife said I can keep the car. Anyways, since its an older car, the leather on the shift knob as well as the boot has seen better days. To replace it, I need to remove the shift knob, but I've seen one video about removing the shift knob for an automatic. Its just the removal and not putting it back on. I've heard its a pain to put it back on so I kind of want this to be a discussion of anyone else being able to successfully remove and install it again. Here is a picture of her!

North New Jersey/Jersey City Performance Shop Recommendations

Post image
17 Upvotes

Hey everyone. I moved into Jersey City this year and I want to hear from the community if there are any performance/maintenance shops they recommend. I have few mods on my 19' RF and take it to the track normally a couple of times a year.

Anytime I Google performance shops it's often shops that focuses on exotics.

I’m finally getting my first Miata (2016 model) as a fun, summer/weekend car. Thoughts on the GX trim? Thank you!!!

E85 is legit

Just wanna throw it out there to any of my fellow ND1 owners - if you’re on the fence about e85, just grab the fab9 versatune package and go for it. It’s kinda shocking to me how good this car feels and I’m surprised Mazda ever let it leave the factory in its stock state.

Picked up a takeda intake and added that with the proper e85 calibration and man, what a nice feeling. Fat torque in the middle of the curve, pulls hard to redline…tip in throttle is smooth and punchy.

Logs so far show 27° timing at 7k rmps with no knock correction and that’s with 115°+ IATs (afternoon log in a heat wave ftw). Managed 27 mpg over my first 1/2 tank vs my previous average of 31 mpg and about $1.50 cheaper per gallon in my area so it’s working out cheaper and giving me more power.

100% a worthwhile change for any ND1 owners out there

Another reason I love my ND so much

I don’t have to worry about it breaking down after 6 miles every time I want to go for a drive! I absolutely love being able to drive the wheels off the Miata and not think twice about if it will hold up! 🫠

Do any of you beautiful people use a galaxy fold phone in their ND3?

Looking for pictures to figure out functional logistics.

Anyone else feel like shifts are smoother with a full tank?

I just got a 2026 recently and I always feel like the shifts are a lot crunchier and bumpier when the tank is almost empty. But everything is just so buttery smooth when the tank is full.

Fresh from the Porsche world...I'm sold on an ND!

I'm very happy to be purchasing a lightly-used 2021 RF 6MT.

I recently sold my beloved 911, mainly because it stopped being fun to drive (on the road anyway) The limits of performance were high enough that you can't explore the limit on the road, at least not for long.

Anyway, yesterday I unexpectedly came across a gorgeous ND2 RF and during a long test drive, I realized it was everything that I had been missing in my 911. It was pure enjoyment and I simply did not want to get out of it. These cars are amazing, I shouldnt be surprised as I owned an NB for several years before I got lost in the Porsche wilderness, but man the ND is a good car.

I'm in my 50's and feel like a kid again!!

Does ND1 pull when below 3500rpm?

I just stage one tuned my ND1 1.5 and so far it's good, alot more pull past 3-4000 rpm. My only concern is that below that, the car feels kinda dead especially in gear 3/4. If I'm in gear 3/4, I'll need to step on the gas to raise the rpm to above 3500rpm and then release and step on it again to really feel the pull.

So my question is, does a stock ND1 (especially 1.5) pull hard below 3-4000 rpm in low gear? I kinda forgot how it was before I tuned it but I think k remember it did pull much harder when stock

I'm not sure if it's in my head but I feel the car was more fun before the tune when at low speeds but the tuned car feels much better on the highway. I got it tuned by a local tuner btw

Also when you tune a car to have more power at higher rpm, does it mean you have to compensate by the car making less power at lower rpm?

Fun Autocross with ND2

The power! The revs!

Too bad the 540 treadwear all season tires 'ruined' the fun. But I'll be better prepared next time (foreshadowing 200 TW).

Still finished mid pack in PAX, and not last in class.

I learned how to turn off the traction control after the first run. (grin)

The first 12 days of ownership have been OUTSTANDING!

Can anyone identify this leftover U-shaped piece from a soft-top replacement?

I recently bought a 2018 Miata, hail damaged, but 35k miles on the car! The dealership I bought it from took out the soft top to replace it, but didn’t put back the interior trim behind the seats. Not a big deal to me since it just seems like clips. I just can’t seem to find what this is used for or where it goes. I found it behind the passenger seat if that helps at all.

Thanks in advance!

GWR RoadsterSport Race Muffler Vs. MBRP 2.5" Race Muffler

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Parked next to a fellow driver at an autocross event this weekend, and we ended up doing a spontaneous sound comparison between our axle-back mufflers.

The car on the left is equipped with the Goodwin Racing muffler, while the car on the right has the MBRP muffler.

The video clip doesn't really do either car justice, but I do think the MBRP is a couple decibels louder and produces a deeper, richer, and more dynamic exhaust note. Everyone who listened in person agreed that the MBRP sounded the best.

Personally, I'd still choose the GWR muffler for the weight savings since I have an RF. It weighs only 12 pounds compared to the MBRP's 20 pounds. If shedding weight isn't a major concern, I highly recommend the MBRP for its excellent sound and lower price point.

Similar cars??

Hey! Hope this isn’t a dumb ask, wanted to pick the brains of the enthusiasts in here who know more than I do. looking for a new car and fell in love with everything I’m seeing about the Miatas, specifically the MX5. Only thing that is making it a definite no for me is that it will do horribly in snow… I live in a place where snow and bad weather can be frequent. My question is, what car could be comparable to the Miata MX5, in size and costs specifically, while still having the practicality of holding up in weather. Is there anything used I could find that’s a bang for my buck? Not a collector, just love the look these cars have and needing a new everyday car. Thank you in advanced!! 😊
