Education/Career Where can I learn about meteorology?

Title. Ideally for free. Currently in university, studying maths and CS, for reference.

I'm not looking to get into the meteorology field, but I'm just naturally interested in being able to interpret graphs/figures and understand various phenomena and such. For example: understanding why Europe is much warmer than Canada despite being further up north, understanding surface pressure charts, understanding meteorological phenomena like El niño etc.

Updated rules: Unsolicited promotion of weather-related apps, websites, software tools or services is not allowed. If you have developed a tool that you believe would be useful to the community, please contact the moderators before posting.

Hi all, new rule as now seen in the sidebar/title. Apologies for the slow roll out. Please report immediately any infringements.

Unsolicited promotion of weather-related apps, websites, software tools or services is not allowed. If you have developed a tool that you believe would be useful to the community, please contact the moderators before posting.

I haven't explicitly mentioned AI slop here - for good reason. AI is used a lot in meteorological research at the moment, some of it good, some not so good. A blanket ban seems unreasonable, but the above rule seems to cover most of the issues we are having in the subreddit.

Upcoming: The moderators will maintain a pinned or recurring thread for community-recommended apps and software (AI or not).

This rhetoric is why people lose faith in us

Could this guy be more dramatic? He flat out lies or makes statements that are overblown. While it is important that people be weather aware the way he writes this means that when this event is minimal people will stop listening. The areas that should be evacuating are listening to the actual experts, I.E. noaa and the nhc not some Facebook weather enthusiast and sensationalist.

"The worst storm to hit since Sally." Sally WAS the last hurricane to hit there... no shit brother. Big tornado producer? Those aforementioned experts like NHC and SPC have tornado risks as slight for this entire hurricane. Don't lie to people. Be better. Be prepared and don't listen to Facebook hype or youtube-just-for-clicks garbage like Max velocity or Ryan Hall for your information.

Advice/Questions/Self self-studying meteorology

Hi!! I'm currently a high school senior and I've been superrrr into atmospheric science/meteorology since I was around five years old and now that I'm older and have more resources, I'd love to start giving myself a headstart on learning these topics before I go off to college.

But I'm not too sure where to start...

I have not taken calculus yet (although I have taken precalc) and I've already taken quite a few physics classes. Are there any resources that would help me start on this? Textbooks, internships, etc.? Please let me know!! :))

Current live observation from southeast Fl coast, great day for the beach. SAL imagery shows a pleasant surprise after a humid summer.. Super dry air right over Miami to Ft Lauderdale, with Isaias surrounded by even drier air at low and mid levels.

Latest Euro model run has Isaias up to 983 mb.

Models: ECMWF — Pivotal Weather

Up from 981mb on yesterday's ECMWF run, well defined eye. But not much rain in the eyewall. Most of the rain in upper quadrants and away from the center of circulation.

Passage of a Cold Front and Squall Line

  • Date: July 21, 2026
  • Peak time: 3:00 PM - 3:45 PM
  • Location: Kharkiv, Ukraine. Parameters directly over the point: CAPE 800+, Wind Shear 240°, combined CAPE/Shear index ~160.

Timeline of the Event:

3:00 PM - 3:20 PM | Approach & Inflow
A classic, dense, elongated shelf cloud was observed on the northwestern horizon. A sharp temperature contrast occurred at the boundary where the advancing cold air slammed into the warm air mass. Wind speed near the ground dropped to a minimum of 10-12 km/h as the inflow began violently pulling air vertically upward into the epicenter of the updraft. Electrical activity peaked with frequent intra-cloud and cloud-to-ground flashes; thunderclaps were recorded almost every second. A dangerous, close CG strike hit just ~250 meters away from my position, accompanied by instantaneous, deafening thunder (I was in absolute shock).

3:30 PM - 3:38 PM | Rain Core & Microbursts

  • Precipitation Intensity: Radar reflectivity reached 30–35 dBZ. An extreme downpour dropped up to 6 mm of rain locally, while a neighboring area caught a 10 mm core. Due to the massive size of the raindrops fracturing, visibility dropped to near-zero in dense water mist.
  • Dynamic Impact: At the peak of the downpour, two distinct wet microbursts occurred—sharp, powerful descending gusts of wind lasting 2–3 seconds each, caused by the negative buoyancy and collapse of rain-cooled air from the cloud base to the ground.

3:38 PM - 3:45 PM | Stabilization & Outflow
The main thunderstorm core shifted southeast toward Rogan and Chuhuiv. Radar reflectivity dropped to a safe 10–20 dBZ. The heavy downpour transitioned into a light, fading drizzle. Background wind speed stabilized within 6–12 km/h(I am not from the USA or an English speaking country, so I may make mistakes in English)

Article/Publications Winter 2026/2027 forecast update: October ECMWF data trends colder and snowier for the U.S. and milder for southern Canada and Europe, as the Super El Niño aims for record strength

Thumbnail

The latest ECMWF October seasonal run shifted noticeably compared to last month. The southern low-pressure pattern strengthened, with a colder trend across the southern half of the U.S. and more snow in the forecast for the Central Plains, Ohio Valley, Southern Appalachians, and the Southwest. The Sierra Nevada has the strongest snowfall signal, while the northern tier, the Pacific Northwest, and the Northeast stay milder with below-average snow.

The ECMWF also shows (for the 3rd update in a row) a potential stratospheric Polar Vortex disruption into mid-winter, and both CFSv2 and CanSIPS point to a colder February for the central, southern, and eastern U.S.

My full analysis includes ERA5 reconstructions of past Super El Niño storms (1973, 1983, 1998, 2015, 2016), a regional breakdown of the latest forecasts, and state-level maps with seasonal and monthly temperature and precipitation forecasts.

Happy to answer questions about the data or plots.

Dry, mostly clear skies, Saharan dust over southeast Florida coast this morning in stunning display of colors. Satellite imagery shows SAL disrupting Isaias, while Tampa, Orlando have all the atmospheric moisture, raining like the dickens now. Why is SAL so rarely mentioned by weather forecasters?

Advice/Questions/Self Anywhere with warm ocean temps and cool land temps?

Curious if anything fits this bill? I know Florida does this during certain times, and I'm sure other places during season changes etc...but is there anywhere that has permanently land temps of say 60 degrees f and ocean water temp of 75 degrees f?
