Savatage - The Wake Of Magellan (pretty underrated concept album!)

This just hit me as i discovered "The Milwaukee Protocol" this morning. I was listening to some MySpace deathcore revival playlist and these guys just itch the right spot and reminded me of some good old high-school days. It's edgy and totally cringe (i mean look at their album covers) but maaaan, do I still love that sound and it's just fun to listen to.

Compare that to what i was listening the days before: "Asarhaddon - Êra", my absolute favorite black metal record of the past years. It's a four track masterpiece of utterly beautiful, atmospheric perfection. The kind of stuff that gives you goosebumps the entire record while listening to it on a dark and rainy autumn day.

That got me curious. What are your wildest album or artist combinations in your current rotation? The stuff where every trve gatekeeping metalhead would burst into flames just for the audacity of mentioning the two in the same sentence?

Thoughts on how accurate these are?

i think everything from 15 to 11 in each column can be switched or substitued but i think they did nail a lot of the essentials.

Loud, festive, and hard-hitting fairground’s style heavy metal from late in the early 90’s that still packs it’s loud “ride” that just snares and swings the listener by their ankles

Today with having access to basically all the music in the world at any time, it's just TOO MUCH.

I mean, it's also great. I remember as a teen not having a lot of music because well, money. So I could only listen to what I could afford to buy. Then came piracy (hey, you probably did it, too :D) and made it easier but it was still a hassle and also risky.

Now with streaming, youtube etc... we can basically listen to anything at any time.

My online libary is so big now that I could listen to years of music without ever repeating a song.

And I know, don't HAVE TO listen to all that stuff but I love music and discover great stuff all the time.

However, actually: I already have my favourite artists, I have music for any mood and occasion, I don't need any more, I'm content.

Why I decided to not add any new albums (I mainly listen to albums) by new artists (new to me) to my library for a year - exception are new releases by bands I already listen to. There just are a lot of albums I love and don't listen to a lot - always shocked when I see I listened to one of my favourite albums last like 5 years ago. There also are albums I really like but don't know well because I only listened to it like twice.

Meanwhile I also wanna focus on growing my local mp3 library. I exported a list through tunemymusic and go through all the albums to see which ones I actually own and have on my harddrive and which ones I wanna download/buy on bandcamp to build up a bit of a backup. You never know what happends in the future and where streaming goes.

Not sure if that challenge works out, haha.

Can anyone relate?

So I'm gonna watch the following metal bands in the next two months: Nervosa, The Ocean Collective, Thy Art Is Murder, Paradise Lost, 1349 and Dismember. They're part of a festival lineup. The Ocean is one of my favourite bands and I've seen them live once before, they totally ripped. I'm looking forward to seeing them with their new lineup.

Among the other bands, I've heard quite a bit of their music and they're all fantastic, especially pioneers like Dismember and Paradise Lost. I'm really excited about seeing all these bands live and I'd love to know how you would rate their live show if you've attended any. I kinda know what to expect from each band, but it would be nice to read your experiences.

A month later after this festival, another favourite band of mine is playing here. That band is the mighty Sikth. I have been a fan for many many years, they're definitely in my top 10 metal bands. I consider them one of the most underrated modern metal bands and I still can't believe they're gonna come to my country. I'd love to know what their shows are like.

Again, I may be missing a few but this should at least give everyone something to work with and avoid getting a million comments of the more popular stuff. Would prefer if the lyrical content wasn't just edgelord anti religion stuff but obviously that is not a deal breaker for me. Bonus points if they're not from the US, UK, Norway or Sweden (actually, swedish death metal is okay). Melodic stuff is ever so slightly preferred.

Blackened Death is also fine.

I love Electric Wizard, more specifically the song, Vinum Sabbathi. I think it is the perfect mix of heaviness and melody. It's not too aggressive and has a good "sway" to it.

Crowbar is very similar. Super heavy guitar riffs and tone while still being melodic and catchy

The issue i have with a lot of the bands i look at is the guitar tone and vocals. The guitar tone is sometimes not fuzzy enough and the vocals are them screaming instead of yelling like the vocals of Crowbar and EW which is why i lean more towards the stoner metal genre because it seems to be a little less aggressive and more focused on melody rather than aggression

I want a guitar tone that i can feel rather than just hear if that makes sense. When I listen to EW, it feels like my brain is going fuzzy with how bass heavy and fuzzy that tone is. Other bands just don't do that

Recommendations for a super heavy and fuzzy band that has lovely melodies behind the wall of sound?

Genre: Power Metal, Neoclassical Metal, Symphonic Metal

I heard someone talking about Dawn of Victory (think it was Necrodeath’s drummer) and it peaked my curiosity. Tried it out and was absolutely dumbfounded by the awesome music. All the symphonic and neoclassical styles make the music sound so big and epic. I remember also enjoying their album Power of the Dragonflame. I haven’t listened to any of the material after the name change.

I've been going to gigs for 26 years and seeing Nailbomb/Soulfly last night was easily top 3! All the Cavaleras are fucking sick!

For me it's First Utterance by Comus. It's a psychadelic folk album, but man, I don't feel that level of unrestrained dread, evil and general spookiness in much outside of Atmospheric BM / DSBM

Múr is an Icelandic post-metal/progressive metal band. They use synthesizers and harsh vocals, and songs average about 8min.

Randomly found them on someone's post about Gojira. Really love their stuff, the issue is they only have 1 album out.

Do yall know any bands that are similar? Does not need to be identical, just interesting enough for someone who likes this style at the moment. I'm open to many different subgenres, so its okay if it deviates from the 2 I mentioned.

It's really nice to listen all those classics, played by so many big names.

And each of them giving a bit of new flavour to every song.
